Title: Thomas WOOTTON'S Family
Post by: klong on Wednesday 22 August 07 22:44 BST (UK)
Could someone shed some light on some name changes in this Wootton family. bedfordshire, please.
Thomas Wootton married Elizabeth Goodwye 1836 (IGI) in Arlesey.

census 1841.  Thomas 25, Elizabeth 25, Sarah 4 and Thomas 1.
(IGI) has Sarah born to Thomas and Elizabeth.(Henlow)  Thomas Jr to Thomas and Mary.(Henlow)

Census 1851 Elizabeth 37, Sarah 13, William 12, Thomas 10, Jane 9 Betsy 6, Eliza 5, Edith 3 George, baby

(IGI apart from Thomas, children born to Elizabeth and Thomas Henlow)

Census 1861.  Charlotte 47, widow; Elizabeth 17 daughter (could be Betsy); Isaac 8 (son of Charlotte,  IGI, parents Thomas/Elizabeth) Thomas son of Charlotte, Ann wife of Thomas and their son William 7 months.
On 1861 census  Eliza was staying with grandparents in Arlesey

Question is Charlotte/ Elizabeth?  Is Mary /Elizabeth?

Can someone offer some ideas please.   Karen

Hello Karen

There is a FreeBMD marriage of a Thomas Wootton to Charlotte Handscourt in Biggleswade RD in Apr-Jun 1857 vol 3b page 585

** but if look at image her name was Handscomb **

& a death of a Elizabeth Wootton in Sept 1855 in Biggleswade RD vol 3b page 196

& two deaths of Thomas Wootton in Sept 1858 vol 3b page 211 & again in Sept 1859 vol 3b page 232, both in Biggleswade RD

regards John

There's also a birth of a Thomas Wootton in Biggleswade RD in the March quarter 1840. If you buy the certificate you'll see if the mother differs from the baptism entry

I can't find any Handscourts in Beds - should it have been Handscomb?

David

PS I believe Charlotte was Charlotte Rook baptised at Southill 4 July 1813 who married James Handscomb at Henlow on 20 Apr 1839. He was buried at Henlow on 14 Oct 1850. She died in 1861. I have her in my tree, although she's not in my direct line

David,   Handscomb it is , yes

could she be the widowed daughter age 30 born Southill, of William Rock living in Henlow on the 1851 census.

Yes, that's her, although I think it's a very wonky 8, so her age is 38, which would be right. Enumerated as Handerson.

Oddly, in 1851 Thomas Wootton married 35 born Langford was a pauper in Biggleswade Union workhouse, whilst his wife and children, including a one month old son, were living in Clifton.

Thank you to everyone for assisting me.
One more small question.  I looked at the IGI again, found Isaac c 1856.  Elizabeth may have died in childbirth.  I will need cert for this.
So, why on the 1861 census does it say, Charlotte widow, Elizabeth daughter, Isaac, and Thomas sons.  Was it normal to say sons and daughter even though she was their step mother?  I have not come across this before.

Many thanks
Karen

Not normal, but I have seen many cases where the relationship should have been step..., and it's shown as son or daughter

Isaac was shown as aged 8 in 1861 so the baptism in 1856 may have been a late one - he is on FreeBMD as his birth being registered in the Sept quarter 1853 - so I don't think Elizabeth died in his childbirth

The IGI also has a christening on 30 Dec 1838 at Henlow of William Wootton, son of Thomas Wootton & Elizabeth.  He is presumably the son age 12 on the 1851 census.  Why is he not with the family on 1841 ?

Good spot JP. Curiouser and curiouser! I can't see him

Perhaps as Elizabeth produced Jane in the Dec quarter 1841 she was feeling under the weather and little Willy had been packed off to grandparents to give mum a break?

Thanks BB, for pointing out Isaac's birth for me.  I should have looked it up before I wrote online.  I have no idea where William was in 1841, JP. Good idea from BB, Elizabeth's parents were Goodwye from Arlesey.
I will need to go to the library to look this one up as I do not have access from home.
Many thanks once again.
