Title: 1851 census Kingwood/Kingswood
Post by: art.birchell on Wednesday 22 August 07 09:16 BST (UK)
My 4 x gr grandmother was an Ann Kingswood b 1760 in Lincolnshire and most of that family are to be found there.

However, from the National Archives 1851 census index there are listed a number of Kingwood/Kingswood persons in Norfolk, notably the parish of Walsingham/Wells that are of great interest to my family research. I'm wondering if someone could do a look up of these families or look to see if there are any other Kingwood/Kingswood families in Norfolk. Later census mention some names in Snettisham, Docking.

Amongst the names I've found listed in the index are William Kingswood b 1784/1811 Robert b 1780/1809/1827 and a number of youngsters John, Robert, Ann, Sarah, Jane  Martha.

Thanking you in advance for any help.

Best Regards

Art/Wozzle

Had a look at this one as well, but although indexed as KINGWOOD, the first letter of the name looks more like a R, comparing it with the R in Road.

The IGI has a marriage a North Walsham in 1818 for a William RINGWOOD to Ann BAILEY, no KINGWOOD marriages.

Similarly in 1861 there is an Edward and Martha in Wells, again indexed as KINGWOOD, but I am fairly certain it is RINGWOOD.

Many thanks Wozzle! This is one that isn't listed at the National Archives where the spelling is KINGSWOOD for some of the other names I listed. Yet Wells is only 40 miles from where my Kingswoods lived.

Very Best Regards

Hi

Had a look at the Norfolk marriage index 1801 - 1837 and there are no Kingwood/Kingswood listed, but there are several Ringwood's

So as Ian C says it looks as if Ringwood has been mis-transcribed  :-\

Many thanks for all of your help. I'm really disgusted at the National Archives for this huge gaff, especially as ithese census transcripts were put online yesterday. Even a number of entries at LDS are flawed and it would appear that Ringwood is a standard Norfolk name. From what I can see it appears that there are no Kingswoods at all in the area despite being so close to Lincoln.

I really appreciate the information which now ensures I shan't waste any further time on trying to find Kingswoods in Norfolk.

Best Regards
