Title: Fly proprietor

While looking up GGG Grandfather in the 1846 Bath directory noticed a chap listed a couple of lines lower down whose occupation was "fly-proprietor" ! The mind boggles! Yes, I'll have a packet of blue-bottles please ;D

Any ideas anyone?

He was basically a cabbie!  A fly was a small horse-drawn cariage - he probably rented them out.

Fly Coachman / Flyman
Fly Proprietor 1) Drove a "fly" a one horse two wheeled light carriage 2) Flyman also a term for a theatre stage hand 3) A Fly Proprietor employed fly drivers and usually owned the flys

My Great Grandfather was a Fly Proprietor Worthing, Sussex in the Mid 1800, had employees and his own stables, it was a effective means of transport before motor vehicles for that era. Mainly used by the gentry and well to do. Thank you.
