I am trying to trace an ancestor - James Hall.
In April, 1857 he heckled the Right Hon. William Gladstone at a parliamentary election meeting held at the King's Head Hotel, Holywell. James is mentioned as "...of the Crescent Mill" in Holywell, so he might have been the owner of the mill.
I would be most grateful if someone could please look up the 1851/1861 Census for Holywell to see if James and his family appears.

hello,
i think that i have found james in holywell for you. listed below:
1861 census
living at brynford st, holywell, flintshire
hester hall head 72 born in newtown, montgomery occ: proprietor of houses
ann hall dau 45 " " " " "
james hall son 42 " " " (says flannel or flour mill - unclear)
manufacturer employing 75 hands
john hall son 38 " " " " " "
harriet davies serv 16 " " " general servant
it says flannel or flour mill for occupation, it is very squashed up and unclear. i would lean towards flannel, because of the amount of personnel he employed.
with best wishes

I have a little information on a James and brother John Hall.
In 1851 John was owner of the Upper Mill in Holywell and shortly afterwards was joined by brother James. About 1957 James purchased Mr Thomas Jones interest in the Crescent Mill (situated slightly downstream from the Upper Mill) and again was joined by brother John. I found this information from the "wandering" books of trips through Wales, and can find it if interested? whilst looking for information on William Evans who managed the Crescent Mill under the Hall brothers.
I am still researching the Crescent Mill and the Hall connection as the owners are more likely to get a mention than the manager.
