Title: Baptism Newcastle - Ann Craig
Post by: KenCalgary on Sunday 19 August 07 23:11 BST (UK)
Ann Craig was born the last quarter of 1840 (per age in 1841 census) but I've been unable to find her in the civil registration. The family lived at All Saints parish, Newcastle and an older sister (Jane Kay Craig) was baptized at Carliol Street Presbyterian in 1836.

I don't know if the parish records are available after 1837 but, if they are, would someone kindly lookup up Ann Craig daughter of Walter Craig and Isabella (nee Frisal). My great grandmother is a very tricky lady to find as, first, her mother died in 1847 and her father remarried with Ann - called Agnes at that time - living with an older sister; then I think Ann later added some middle names to gain some of her Scottish heritage!

Thanks, Ken

Hi Ken,

There's an Ann Johnston Craig 1840 Dec Qu Newcastle Tyne 25/308

could that be one of the middle names she added?

Unfortunately it's not - she became known as Ann Wemyss Brown Craig - but in that her other names seem to have come out of the blue I wouldn't be too surprised if Johnston isn't correct.

I'll wait to see if anyone comes up with other options then I might order that certificate. It's a little costly when converted to Canadian dollars so I like to hold off as long as possible.

Hi Ken,

Had a feeling you'd probably already seen and discounted that one, and in those days they weren't always registered, so a baptism would be best.  The local register office should be able to check for parents' names for you before you part with your cash for that certificate:

The Register Office
Civic Centre
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE1 8PS
Phone: 0191 211 5091
E-mail: registrars(at)newcastle.gov.uk      (substitute @ for (at) )

Thank you, Barbara. That is a good suggestion I hadn't thought of.

Hi Ken,

Don't believe in parting with my cash too quickly!
If Newcastle doesn't have it for any reason and you were to order direct from the GRO, they would charge you a fee for checking information before sending the cert, I think it's £3. that's at
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

for future ref there's a list of register offices at
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/

Hope this helps,
Barbara
