Hi there. This is a long shot but I thought I might give it a try.
I need John BOARD born 1817, Somerset. If I am correct, the census was taken on the 6th June 1841? John BOARD set sail for Australia as a convict on the 7th June 1841.
So I have no idea whether he was actualy included in the census or not :-\

Hi Questa,
Yes, you have the correct census date.
Do you know if John was married, place of birth, occupation, parents' or wife's names, or, assuming he was in prison, the place from where he set sail?

From my information, which is second hand and sketchy at the least, he was born Bridgewater or Taunton, Somerset in 1817. As far as I know he wasn't married.
His occupation was a shoemaker and he also was in the 11th regiment, he deserted however and thus the reason for being sentenced.
He set sail from Plymouth.
His parents were probably Thomas an Mary Board (nee.Chedzey). Not much of an idea about syblings.

Hi Questa
I have found this family in 1841:
Bridgwater, Somerset
Thomas Board 55 smith
Mary 45
Sarah 19
William Stone lab 16
next door:
John CHEDGOY 18 Shoemaker (I wonder if this is meant to be Chedzey?)
no sign of John Board .... do you have the details of the boat he was on etc?

Hi again
there is this on IGI ...submitted records:
Marriage:
Thomas Board to Mary Chedzoy
6 Jan 1805
Stogursey, Somerset
and these are possible children
parents : Thomas Board and Mary
christenings in Bridgwater, Somerset
Charles Board 6 Mar 1814
JOHN BOARD 21 sep 1817
Jane Board 18 June 1820
sarah Board 9 may 1823 (she could be the daughter living with Thomas and Mary on the 1841 census ..see previous post)
Jane Board 27 aug 1826
Richard Board 12 Feb 1826 died 8 Aug 1827

The ship he was on was "David Clarke". It left for Australia the day after the census was taken!
I am confused about the syblings as on the convict records they say he had 3 brothers and one sister.
The fact that the possible Chedzoy relation living next door was a shoemaker may be a lead as John was also shoemaker at some time.

hi Questa
Maybe when he stated he had 2 brothers and one sister , he was talking about the live siblings.
these were the children that popped up on IGI when looking for children of a Thomas Board and a Mary in Bridgwater. They are possibles! Also they were submitted records. I am sure you have seen that if one child dies then sometimes they name the another child with the same name, as may have been the case with the 2 Janes.
I was also thinking that if John set sail on the 7th, then the night of the census he would have been on the boat ...I have no idea if there are records for for that.
I have looked around the 1841 census and this family may be of interest.
1841:
Ropers lane,Parish of Bridgwater
Thomas BOARD 35 j. shoe maker
Elizabeth " 30
Mary " 11
James " 10
Eliza " 5
Charles " 3
William " 2
all born in county

Hello Questa
I read your message board with interest, John Chedzoy shoemaker, is my ancestor.
I have done some research on the Board family, in the hope of finding info on John Chedzoy.
John Board did indeed have 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Sarah baptised=09 march 1823 @ Priory Church of St Andrew
Stogursey.
Richard bap=12 feb 1826
Charles bap=06 mar 1814
John bap=21 sept 1817
There were 2 families in Stogursey at the same time, parents =Thomas and Mary. However, only 1 of the fathers was a Blacksmith, and being, that a Blacksmith was so well respected, there is no way that he would descibe himself as a labourer, as does the father of the other family.
Also, I found that, John Chedzoy shoemaker was the son of Mary Chedzey's (b1788 @ Stogursey) brother Richard b=1786 at Stogursey. Without your message I would never have made the connection, Thankyou.
John Chedzoy b=24 Nov 1823, disappears between 1845 and the 1851 census, if you have any info on him, I would like to hear from you.
Regards Chris.
