Hi clever people,
Can anyone tell me why I keep losing my internet connection? We are not in a flood area and the weather is dry now. Have checked with BT and provider no answers there. Could it be a timeout problem? It is driving me mad!!

I've had similar problems with bt and their not-so-wonderful helpline.
I've found the solution often lies in switching off the computer, turning off the power, pulling all the plugs out of the router, waiting a minute, replugging & restarting.

I am also having this problem my son told me to pull out the plugs like you say Barbara but i'm afraid to just incase I cannot get back to normal .I tried clearing my pictures and some old mail also cleared loads from my documents to see if that would help but it didn't
does it work Barbara

Been there done that twice today folks ! thanks for the suggestions!
Never mind if other people are having problems it can't be just me! That really is a help!
Thanks for that!

Hi Elizabeth,
Well it's worked for me! Don't be frightened of it, if I can do it you can, I'm the world's worst at technical wotsits - take each plug out and lay it next to the place it comes from, then put them back in the same order. Some have colours that match which makes it easier! Go on, have a go, live a little!!
Rabbit B, sorry it didn't work, I used to have time-out problems when I was on dial-up, kept cutting out after abt 20 mins, but since getting broadband, it only happens now & again, unplugging etc always works for me ::)

Hi Barbara,
if in doubt I always reboot, works a treat, I just wondered if there might have been another reason for this problem!! Thanks for your reply!

PS I am on broadband and have only had this problem since I changed to the faster speed!!

That's the wonder of science and modern technology for you ;D ;D

Ive always been with Broadband
Will try it when my son is around
I don't know if any of you are like me but I hate to ask my boys for help in these fields
They always think I know everything
But then don't mothers know every ;D ;D ;D

Did you get a new Router at the same time, or stick with an original ADSL Modem ?
-
Hi Newf,
I was provided with a nice new ADSL modem when I changed from dial up to broadband.
Rabbit B ;D
-
Sorry, misunderstood - read that as you were originally on BroadBand and upgraded it to a faster speed.
It reminded me that when I switched from 1.1 Meg to 6 Meg, my old ADSL Modem was effectively limited to 2 Meg, so I needed a new router ....
-
Now you've lost me, too technical ;D
Anyway Rabbit B, you seem to be able to stay with us at the moment, have your problems stopped for a while?
Barbara
-
Hi Newf,
You could be right, I was offered 8mg, 6 months after I joined my service provider, so I said yes please! As my router was only 6months old that thought had not crossed my mind!!
I wonder if that is what is happening here, but having said that a friend of mine joined another ISP three weeks before me and my modem is one up from hers. She is not getting this problem and operates on 8mgs+ but I am only opperating on 3.34mgs, which annoys me because I am much nearer the exchange!

Sorry Barbara,
I did not mean to ignore you. This is a very intermittant problem!! Every now and then in the middle of something it goes!
Rabbit B
-
Google the Name and Model of your Router - just to be sure, but I'd think if it was only 6 months old, it would be OK.
What about the filters one has to plug into any used phone / fax / SKY Box socket - all up to date and as new as the Router ?
Can you operate your PC from the Master phone socket ?
-
Hi Rabbit B - you're not with AOL are you? I've been experiencing this for some weeks now, as have others on the AOL message boards. Some have contacted AOL who give various bits of advice which don't seem to work, or blame BT, but I don't know if this is an AOL problem or a BT one.
When it first happened, I had to switch off at the sockets, counted to 30 and switched on again, this seemed to work better than just rebooting the computer. Now, 9 times out of 10 it will reconnect itself automatically at the 1st, 2nd or 3rd try.
Judith
-
Hi Nuwf and Judith
No I am not with AOL, I have a top of the range ISPS and all the sockets were new with the modem, have altered them all round several times. Cannot test to main socket, because that is downstairs and my office is upstairs.
BT state that it is not their fault, have just check my speed and it is below 3mg this am so am going to contact help line!! Will also google the router model and make!

Having a similar problem with ntl which is now Virginmedia, but more often just very slow. I tend to blame my laptop because if I re-boot it seems to sort the problem.
Last night - probably lunchtime in Australia - so I blame you all for suddenly logging on! - I was booted off Rootschat, I couldn't do anything, couldn't even log off, so I rebooted my laptop and that solved the problem.

Hi
A couple of things come to mind
Check that all phones have a filter, this includes caller display boxes
If you have a monitored alarm system that works over the phone line this may not have a filter and could possibly cause problems.
Dont assume that because the filters came with the moden thay are working, unplug all your phone and try the internet, if you still have the problem, change the filter and try again, when you are happy with the connection move the next phone and repeat until all phones are connected
This advise was given to me by my ISP and I found 1 filter to be faulty and an extra one require for the caller display which I had completely forgotten about
Hope this helps

I think having to reboot your computer is a little drastic. If you launch Task Manager (press Ctrl + Alt + Delete) and end the process iexplore.exe (if you are using Intenet Explorer) that should solve the problem.
Then just relaunch Inernet Explorer in the usual way.
Check whether Event Viewer has any further information on the problem. Double click Administrative Tools in Control panel and select Event Viewer. Check the Applications section for errors around the time you got disconnected and double click on the Error.

Downside
I don't know who you were directing the info to, but the problem last night and even during the day when I tried to launch Legacy, was that ctrl.alt.del, wouldn't work either!
Chris - We have recently had a burglar alarm installed that works over the 'phone system, so that might be my problem.
Liz
ps. I use Mozilla Firefox
-
I don't know who you were directing the info to
Anyone that who thinks they have to reboot their PC to fix the problem of application hang. By the way Firefox runs a process called firefox.exe which can be ended to unfreeze the internet session.
If you cannot get Task Manager to launch the conventional way then try this:-
Start >> Run and type: taskmgr.exe and press OK.
-
Thanks Downside, I'm very good at typing, but hopeless on the workings of computers, didn't even know the phrase application hang - is that the same as when people say the screen froze?
Does it damage the laptop to reboot, I've always thought it was just a short cut to shutting it down and starting it up again.
Liz
-
didn't even know the phrase application hang - is that the same as when people say the screen froze?
Application = Program
It simply means that a program rather than the operating system (Windows) has frozen or is not responding. So if you are on the Internet and Internet Explorer or Firefox freezes but you are still able to move your mouse pointer or operate your keyboard then the application has frozen. If you cannot move your mouse pointer about the screen and the keyboard fails to respond then you have system hang.
If you have application hang then you can kill off that process by using Task Manager rather than reboot the PC.
-
Thanks Downside
I'll remember that in future.

-
Hi Downside,
Sound advice thank you.
My ISPS is blaming my phone line! BT is blaming ISPS Getting fluctuating speed so might buy and extra filter and try it on each connection. Had a frozen screen twice yesterday, after I switched it off, it got stuck shutting down to restart.
Please tell me, is there a 'time out' in my machine or on rootschat? Perhaps I spent too long doing what I wanted, I am slower then most? I try to remember to work off line but do not always think of it!
Thanks for all your advice I shall copy and keep that!

So Sorry Lizzie,
Concentrating so hard on what Downside was telling me that I missed answering you.
Thanks for your comments too.

Another query, what do you do if you have system hang? That happened to me last evening and the only option I had was just to turn off the laptop as nothing else was working. Strangely when I turned it back on and it sorted itself out, I had a screen message from Firefox stating that the programme had closed unexpectedly and asking if I wanted to go back to where I was (or words to that effect), I clicked on Yes and bingo the websites I had been on, including Rootschat, were reinstated on the exact page I had been on.

what do you do if you have system hang?
I guess you have to power off. You should always try and see if you can launch Task Manager because there is an option to Shut Down from there.
If you look on the Task Manager tool menu it is the 4th item from the left. Another trick is to press Ctrl + Esc to see if you can get the Start menu to work. You can then use the arrow keys to move up to the Turn Off Computer option and press the Return key and the shutdown sequence should begin.
Firefox does remember you last location and should offer to restore your last session in the event of an abnormal shutdown.

Downside ,
is this firefox a free download and if so which bit does one need? Is it safe and how much space does it take up?
I contacted ISPS yesterday but until I can get someone to put my modem directly into the main phone box they do not want to know! I cannot do it, so will have to wait for someone to come and help me! Daft I call it and excuses! excuses!

Firefox is an internet browser from Mozilla that is free. Some people consider it to be safer than Internet Explorer largely because it does not allow ActiveX components to run, which potentially can allow malware to be downloaded on to a computer. In terms of disk space:-
My folder C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox occupies 19.2mb.
Whereas C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer occupies 6.38mb.
Both browsers use other folders in C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings
Browsers download files and images called browser cache, IE puts them in Temporary Internet Files and Firefox puts them in Local Settings but uses a database rather than have them as separate files like IE.
http://www.getfirefox.net/
If you currently use Internet Explorer and you want to install Firefox it will allow you to import your Favorites during the installation process. It automatically imports your details (login and Password) from Internet Explorer.

If you would like some further information on Internet Explorer's security risks, here is an article from the Washington Post; http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2007/01/internet_explorer_unsafe_for_2.html

Thanks Downside,
For your prompt reply, this will certainly go in my favourites.
Can it go into favourites and be activated when needed or does one use it instead of MS explorer? ???
Thanks for the info John, most interesting. I have been to Reno lovely place for a holiday!

They are trying to eliminate a possible source / cause of your problem Rabbit - by running from the Master Socket, you bypass all the daisy-chain wiring thru secondary sockets, and possible poor connections.
See if a friend or neighbour has an extension lead - guess you cant be that far away from the MSocket, even if you have to route a cable thru the window on a temporary basis ...
:)

Hi Newf,
Have worked in telecoms so had worked that out, but thanks for your advice! The socket I am working from was BT installed! I don't have daisy chain wiring in this house. ;D pity it might be better!!!
I am going to get some more connectors though and fiddle with testing those first! One of them could be faulty, even though I have swapped them round. So could the actual plugs! Many possibles to check yet before I call an engineer! ::)
I do know that such intermittant faults [most difficult to trace] are likely to be internal! so I will probably get an engineer out sometime.
Strange thing is that several friends are having the same problem but with different servers! Why are some days worse than others! There is another anomaly ??? We can't all have duff internal wiring!
Rabbit B ;D
PS what happened there! This came up twice?

Oh, hello, I am not alone, then.
That's comforting :-\
I seem to run at a good speed, no screen freezes, pointer dashing around like it should...
But the Internet keeps cutting out.
Between 12, mid day and around 4 in the afternoon, and between 9 in the evening and 11 at night. The rest of the time it's normal.
Service provider had the brilliant idea that at that time one of my apliances, probably central heating (I know it's a cold summer but ?) was kicking in.
I sat here last night up to 12 minutes past midnight before it came back on....The house was still, quiet, just me and the comp running.
The funny thing is, this has happened before, twice. It lasted for a couple of weeks each time, and then stopped just as suddenly as it had begun.
Once last summer, once last Christmas, when I was on Dial Up, and now just suddenly this summer, when I have Broadband.
Tried all the plug pulling, closing down, starting up again, jiggling and threatening people...nothing works. I seem to just have to sit
and weather the storm.
That's another thing they said it could be...Bad weather, but bad weather doesn't usually come by the clock, and only at certain times of the year ;D

If you get Mozilla Firefox which I highly recommend, you will have to make it your default, rather than IE, otherwise when (if) you get e-mails from Rootschat and you try to click on the link when you are only logged on to Mozilla, you will not be able to bring up the appropriate posting.
Hope that makes sense, it was a problem I had some months back, I'm sure Downside will be able to explain it better than I can.

No he can't. :)

Ah, so that BT-installed one is likely to be direct from the master if you dont chain from socket->socket. Did they run an external cable to conect it ?
No difference then to using an extension lead IMHO ... :)

OK folks now how about this!
I had a good look at firefox, and there is a bit at the bottom which says watch the funny foxes video! So ever game! I clicked on the link and Voila! ;D

Can you borrow another computer and / or ADSL modem / router for a day or two to see whether the problem is in the PC, the router, or the phone line
?
Do you have a wireless netwrk?
Graham

Thanks Liz,
I was beginning to think it was me! :-[
I had written replies to everyone and forgotten to copy to the clipboard and it cut me off and I lost it!! >:( This is the 2nd time of typing! ???
I was thanking Graham for his suggestion and saying that I do not have wireless connection. Have thought of borrowing a computer/router from someone but it is all very intermittant! Worst type of fault to find! PC has been upgraded so big working memory. ::)
BT checked all wiring some time back all OK within, they found a fault on the pole. They fixed that! But it happened again! Hope that answers your question Newf: ;)
Until I found out that other people like PaulaToo were having problems I was sure that I had a gremlin! Hopefully it will clear up when the ground dries out! 8)

sorry I cannot find the thread that was posted a few weeks ago about people who are complaining about the connections with their broadbands :( :(
Can i ask if anyone is with Talk Talk and is it a good move to make .At the moment I am with Orange and every now and then I have to connect up again with my speed touch .

We're not with TalkTalk but there is a running topic in our weekend paper about how awful they are. I'm sure all providers have some disgruntled customers but TalkTalk does seem to stand out - see http://paler.com/forums/message-view?message_id=4857

I would like to disagree there,
I may sound like the minority but I have had no problems with talk talk since I joined them over a year ago.
The only issue I have had with them was my bb connection. I was advised that it would be active around the middle of aug 06, but it wasnt, so I phone ofcom who gave me the complaints number. I spoke to someone that day, who advised me that there had been no order, and promised to have it on within 7 days.
Sure enough in 4 days my bb was active, and I didn't have to pay the activation fee.
And I haven't had a problem since.
-
Thank you Monica and Beth
I did fill in the forms over a year ago to have talk talk when I got my new mobile phone
At the time it was to be free but for some reason I was not connected I took 3 MAC codes to them and still got no reply .They have an offer on just now if you sign up with Talk Talk Broadband and buy the senata sport programme for £9.99 a month you get a free digital freeview tn box
We have freeview and thought it would be OK to have the sport programme , but I don't want any trouble with the connections if it is the same as Orange
