Hi Guys,
I have a 'floating' Punnett in my tree. i.e. i don't know who he belongs to :~
Alfred William Punnett b. 1908 Q3 Uckfield 2b 121
is there any way of telling without buying the birth cert who he belongs to?
as it is after the 1901 census and before mothers maiden names were added in the BMD?
from the BMD i have found his death also:~
date of birth 12 Jun 1908 , Alfred William Punnett, Haywards Heath, reg. Aug 2001
i may have to just wait til the 1911 census!

There's only one Punnet family in Haywards Heath in 1901 so it's possible he belongs to them?

Fanny Wife M 31 Sussex Danehill
Kate daur 8 " Cuckfield
Harry son 6 " Danehill
Arthur son 5 " Haywards Heath

Dorothy is my great nan,
No he doesnt belong to us directly was thinking he was a cousin of Dorothys.
Iris Marjorie who was born 1908 in Cuckfield is Dorothys sister

Oh never thought of Uckfield,
Clays Cottage, Aggons Road, Danehill, Sussex
Herbert Punnett Head M 63 Estate Carpenter Sussex Heathfield
Ann M Wife M 61 Sussex Warbleton
Edith A Mitchell Visitor S 13 " Hastings
RG13; Piece: 902; Folio: 157; Page: 2
So I don't think he could be their child!
At Chelwood, Common Road, Danehill, Sussex there is
Edward Kenwood Head Widr 61 General Labourer Sussex
Frank Son S 31 " "
Alfred Son S 27 Carter for Corn Merchant "
George W Son S 18 Grocer's Assistant "
Ada E Punnett Serv Wid 24 Housekeeper "
Harold A Servant's Son 2 "
RG13; Piece: 902; Folio: 155; Page: 17
Possible that he could be Ada's illegitimate child

my nan, Dorothys daughter said that there was another brother (for Dorothy) 'John' that died young, but i don't seem to be able to find him. however i don't think that Alfred is 'John' becuase of Iris being born also in 1908 but in Cuckfield, and the fact that Alfred didn't die young.
Maybe my nan was thinking of Arthur as he died aged 26 though why she would call him John is beyond me.
thinking out loud here Horace George who is Alfred James brother is the most likely candidate as he married Elizabeth Riley in Q3 1888 Uckfield
they had two children i know of:~
Horace Herbert b. 4th May 1890 Hurstpierpoint
Arthur A b.1899 Heathfield
Elizabeth died in 1911 Q4 Uckfield
Horace then married his sister in law Ada Punnett nee Penfold, on 26th Nov 1919 (Adas first husband was Arthur Punnett (Horace & Alfreds brother) b. 1873 m. 2nd Dec 1896 at Nutley Parish Church he died on 28 Nov 1898 Chelwood Common of Brights Disease, just after his son Harold was born.)
however i didn't want to attribute Alfred to Horace until i was certain after all Horace, Arthur & Alfred themseleves had cousins that were having families in the same area at the same time. i didn't know if there was another way of finding out who his parents were like baptisims records. then again i don't know what church either.
geuss i will have to wait.
just seen your last post and yes he could be Adas illegitamate child.
Herbert is the Alfred James, who you found in 1901, father and Ann M his wife was originally a Mitchell.

Hi Toni
Yes, if Dorothy was your great nan then you and I are related sort of - well it's complicated but if you would like to contact me I can try and explain it to you. My family tree on ancestry explains it as best I can.
