Title: DSM
Post by: Jed59 on Sunday 12 August 07 23:21 BST (UK)
On holiday, got talking to someone just beginnning their research; they said someone in family had been awarded the  DSM.,which they have framed All they knew was the guy was a gunner in the royal navy in WW2.
I said i'd ask (in here) if someone could kindly say how they could find out more about why he was awarded it etc. Apparently the people have been told to go to Greenwich but they live in northumberland so is a long way.
Dont know any more details than that but pointers to pass on would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Jed

Gosh this is an old post, but I've only just come across it. Did you manage to get any info?

If not then the first place to look is the London Gazette:

http://beta.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?GeoType=London

That will give you date, service number and possibly unit.

Then, one needs to look on the NA because many recommendations are now online. If not, then one needs to search, and then apply for the original recommendation.

If you have a full name, then I can try to track him down.

Unfortunately it will be a trawl through the National Archives for his recommendation/citation as it isn't on the LG. WW2 gallentry awards are being uploaded for online access but most of the RAF and Navy are still not available yet. I will see if I can find the relevant file number for you.

The LG only states his being awarded it:

http://beta.gazettes-online.co.uk/ViewPDF.aspx?pdf=35695&geotype=London&gpn=3914&type=ArchivedSupplementPage&all=&exact=john%20james%20doyle&atleast=&similar=

Have you seen the site dedicated to the ship?
