Title: Artists - John Houghton Hague & Joshua Anderson Hague
Post by: northern_rose on Sunday 12 August 07 14:42 BST (UK)
I'm working on a friends tree (which is proving very interesting!! ;) ;))

I have John Houghton Hague as an artist (1841 to 1934) on all census docs and so can definately link him with the family. On "Googling" to see if I can find pictures of his work (I have) I found one reference to him being the brother of Joshua Anderson Hague (1850-1916) (have found lots of his works too!).

The reference to the arstists being brothers is on a website about another artist  (Jackson - who may also be related?) BUT I can't tie Joshua to John or John's parents/siblings on any census.

How do I prove or disprove the relationship?

John Houghton Hague was son of Samuel (born c 1805 Oldham) and Esther (born c1805 Newton, Manchester)

Other siblings were Ellen Houghton Hague (born 1844 Manchester), Thomas S Hague (born 1839 Manchester) and Edward (born c 1841 Manchester).

I have Samuel, Esther and the siblings on all the censuses -
1841 Deansgate, Manchester
1851 Deansgate Manchester (Thomas & Edward @ School in Dunham Massey)
1861 Newton Heath, Manchester (no Joshua)
1871 Siblings now moved to Oldham

Any suggestions as I'd love to prove the relationship?

Hi Northern Rose,

There's an ancestral file on Familysearch

Joshua Anderson HAGUE 17 Jun 1850 Rusholme, Lancashire, England
Death 24 Dec 1916  Deganwy, Carnarvonshire, Wales
Burial 29 Dec 1916  Llanrhos Church, Llandudno, Carnarvonshire, Wales
Father Jonathan HAGUE Mother Mary ANDERSON
Spouse Sarah HENSHALL Marriage 29 Nov 1875 Christ Church, Heaton Norris, Lancashire, England

Let's see if we can find him on census ...

Thanks - rather embarrassed that I didn't look there! ::) ::)

None of "my" Hagues have been found on Family search so I presumed he wasn't there!

He therefore isn't the brother of John Houghton Hague! The website is incorrect - I might contact them to ask for their source!

Can we work out if they are related in anyway?

Indeed I can see a matching Joshua in 1861 (RG9/2561 67 2) ... and 1871 (RG10 3657 59 1) where he is an 'ARTIST (painter in oil)' .

So, seems the information on that website was wrong  :-\

Have a look at the ancestral file - it does look quite well researched. Their fathers don't seem to be brothers either ... or at least weren't born in the same place  :-\

erm this is getting interesting and frustrating >:(. Thanks for the census pages.

From the ancestral file there doesn't look like a link but from the censuses both the artists seem to come from the same background i.e. parents were in keepers/publican/licensed v's! Is this just a coincidence?

It is strange that only in thepast 2 days I have also found two brothers who were artists according to the census entries for 1881
Thomas Francis Dickson b 1820 and John Robert Dickson b 1817. Googling their names has not helped find anything else about them they lived in Fitzroy Sq London in 1881 John and his family at number 6, Thomas and his family at number 2.

What i sinteresting is that several of thier children were artists, singers etc.

Have you any advice on how I might begin to find out more about them both?

Hi Robyn,

I can't see anything by googling either. I've spotted Thomas F in 1871 census though - give me a shout if you want the details (RG10/210 33 61). Also 1861: RG9/101 26 46

 :)

Oh wait!! I think you'll find out they were called Dicksee instead of Dickson!  :D :D Plenty on the net!!  :D

Thankyopu so much, Yes I wold like the 1870 census info.

I had just found one of their sons Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee!!

So it seems that the census in 1881 wsa transcribed incorrectley.

Many Thanks for this info.

I will share it with my relative who is also researching this branch of our family found on a handwritten tree from the 1920's compiled by her husbands grandmother. Names etc are very hard to decipher and we have been trying to confirm th eenttires and dates etc.
