Title: MITCHELL/DIX in Bath & around?
Post by: Old Bristolian on Thursday 09 August 07 17:59 BST (UK)
I've obtained the birth certificate of Mary Ann Mitchell, 14 March 1842. Her parents are listed as Henry Mitchell & Hannah Dix (informant is Hannah Dix, mother). The birth took place at 39 Claremont Buildings, Walcot, Bath. Henry is a French Polisher.
There are not at the address in the 1841 census, & I can't find them at all (a few individuals who could be them, but nothing definite) or in 1851.
I think Hannah may have died in 1859, aged 42 as Hannah Mitchell, but I've not been able to find any marriage in the indexes. They had two other children, Henry born about 1825 & Emma in 1828 according to the 1861 census, when Henry is a widower. He went on to marry again & produce another family. His birthplace is given as Wotton Under Edge or Uley in Gloucestershire, but his baptism can't be found in the PRs there (see previous thread in Gloucestershire)
Any help or ideas very much appreciated

Steve

Hi
On the 1851 Census a Henry V Mitchell aged 32 born at Walcot Bath and working as a french polisher is living with is wife Eliza aged 24 a laundress born at Batheston. They are living at bailbrook Batheaston however the
name of the street/house i cannot decipher. Could this be your relative .As hannah registered the birth as Hannah Dix maybe they were never married.

Hi Steve
on the 1861  census whih shows Henry as a widower aged 43 the children living with hom are Henry 18 born 1843, Mary Ann  19 born 1842 and Emma 13 born 1848 this does not tie into to the dates of birth you listed But cannot find any of the children on the 1851 census.......Yet!

Hi Steve

Looked at the 1871 census and found Henry Vincent Mitchell living with new wife Margeurite at 10 Forge Street Crewe Cheshire along with her children from her first marriage John Tulley age 8 born in Nantwich Cheshire and  Ann Ellen Tulley aged 7 born in Newcastle Staffordshire and also Henry Vincent Mitchell aged 1.
It says the new wife is 54 but looking at the census it looks like 34. Looking back at the 1861 census she appears with her family aged 23 as  Margaret maiden name Miles and her husband Anthony Tulley aged 23 agricultural labourer born in Newcastle Staffordshire . All her family came from Mayo  Ireland and her father worked as a Rag and Bone collector
But still no trace of the Mitchells children.

Thanks Rob,

First of all my apologies - I see I've given the wrong dates for Henry jnr & Emma Mitchells births - they should read 1843 & 1848.
Henry V Mitchell is very interesting, but I'm certain the 1871 one can't be mine - he appears on that census in Bristol with his new wife, Louisa Jane (Bult) whom he married in 1862 (I've now got the cert). His father was George Mitchell, a tailor, born 1791 in Wooton Under Edge, whom I've found in 1851 in Bristol as a lodger (no family!).
Its intuiging that both Henrys are French Polishers with a link to Walcot though.
So we have:
1841 No definite individuals
1851 Henry V Mitchell in Batheaton/ George Mitchell in Bristol
1861 Henry Mitchell in Walcot
1871 Both Henry & Henry V
I've wracked my brain over 1851 for my Henry - but I don't see that Henry V could be the same man, because of the 1871 results

hi Steve

Dont know if you alredy have this but George Mitchell seems to appear on both the 1841 census (with William) and the 1871 census but not the 1861 census.

1841 George Mitchell aged 45 Tailor born ?Somerset living at 3/4 Galloway ?, St James Bath Forum with children
Emma 8
George 12
Richard 6
Sarah 20
Walter 4
William 15

age differs but they were rounded to nearest 5 years for the census

Also in the same address are
Elizabeth Sainsbury 75
Richard Sainsbury 75
Richard Sainsbury 25
Robert Sainsbury 20

Maybe Georgr is already a widower and the Sainsburys are his inlaws?

On the 1871 census he appears as aged 60 widow born 1791 Wooton under Edge  and working as a Tailor livin at St Augustines Bristol He is living with a new wife Ellen ages 49!! form Ireland ?Cashel

Thanks Rob

I'll check those out - looks like the right George. I think son Henry may have left home by 1841 (he would have been in his mid 20s) & I believe he may have a brother George who witnessed his second marriage - so I'll dig deeper

I've found a reference to Henry & Hannah Mitchell being in Bristol in 1851:

Pope's Parade, St Pauls, with children Mary (9), Henry (7) & Miranda (1) - this is the same street Henry's father George is in; but I can't find them on Ancestry - I've tried all ways of searching the index, but they don't appear.

I've started to plough through the parish page by page, but Ancestry seems to seize up after about 10 pages. can anyone who can access the 1851 Census through a different channel look for them for me & let me have a reference?

Thanks Barbara, & for your PM.

I was puzzled at first by Marandea - she seems to appear in all later records as Emma - & signs Emma on her sister's marriage certificate. I always wondered why I couldn't find her birth - BMD has Miranda!

Hi Lesley

I've progressed a bit since the last post - I've sent a PM so we can make contact. Don't hold your breath though - the Mitchells are still my most awkward family!
