Hi All,
I am new to this game and am trying to research my husbands family. Any help would be appreciated
My husbands grandfather's name is Giovanni Lorenzo Berturelli who was born 27th January 1893 in Dunfermline. His wife's name was Fanny McCreadie and came from around the same area - we think Dalrymple. Both married 7th Feb 1923.
I would like to build a family history and would love to hear from anyone who can help me get started.
Many thanks,
Casafina

Hi Casafina
Welcome to Rootschat :)
To help you start, it would be worth your while reading this thread:

I think if I were you, I'd start with getting their marriage certificate which you can search for and download from Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (pay to view) It should cost no more than 6 units (£1.20) as you know the date and names. This will give you the names of their respective parents.
After that it would be worth looking for them or their ancestors on the 1841-1901 censuses, collecting BMD certs on the way.
Good Luck

Hi Gadget,
I have tried searching for the birth, marriage and death info on Scotlandspeople and cannot find anyone with their names. I was hoping that some kind person may be able to come up with some info from the 1901 Census.

Was their marriage in Scotland? if so it should be there as you have the date. Did you use wild cards?
It would be easier to find them on the census once you have their parents' names. Also, the 1901 census is available on Scotlands People and via an Ancestry index, among others.
As you seem to be well into searching the records, it is far more exciting for you to find them, if you can, rather than other people.

Dunfermline FIfe SCOTLAND around 1900,We do not know their Italian origins but we think their may be links to orchestra members who lived on LONDON Near the WEST end Covent garden area. Hi Geraldine
With Scotland's People you have to be prepared to look for spelling alternatives and mis-indexing. For instance in the 1901 Census indexed under Bertunelli
living at 33 Chalmers Street Dunfermline
Domenico Berturelli / Head / 50 / Ice Cream Dealer / born Italy
Leonardie Berturelli / Wife / 35 / born Italy
Giovanni Berturelli / Son / 8 / born Dunfermline
Alesandro Berturelli / Son / 3 / born Dunfermline
Luigia Berturelli / Dau / 16 / born Italy
Adele Berturelli / Servant / 20 / born Italy
In the 1911 Census
Living at 3 Park Street Ballingry
John Bertorelli / Head / 18 / Assistant Shopkeeper Ice Cream / born Dunfermline
Lesandro Bertorelli / Brother / 8 / born Dunfermline
(Probably Giovanni and Alesandro)
While at 33 Chalmers Street Dunfermline
Domenico Berturelli / Head / 62 / Ice Cream Dealer / born England
Eugenia Leonardi Berturelli / Wife / 48 / born Italy
Louisa Berturelli / Daughter / 22 / Shop Assistand Ice Cream / born Itlay
Michellino Berturelli / Son / 11 / born Dunfermline
Angelino Berturelli / Daughter / 8 / born Dunfermline
I think these should be your husband's family
B.T.W. According to Giovanni's Birth Certificate Domenico and Eugenia married in 1876 in Burgataro Italy

I'm sorry, in the 1901 Census listing above between Alesdandro and Luigia I missed out Marcello / Son / 2 / born Dunfermline
Marcello D Gius Bertorelli born 1899 Dunfermline and Marcello DG Berturelli married Alice Sinclair McLeod in Dunfermline 1925. Presumably Marcello also known as Michellino.
Another example of alternative surname spelling Lorenzo Alesandro Bertolelli son of Domenico and Eugenia, born and died in Dunfermline 1899.
