This James Stevens was in Norfolk Island prior to joining various regional police forces in Tasmania.   Mitchell Library records (NSW) record him as Chief Constable between (from memory) 1847 - 1853.  He obviously sailed to Hobart to be married in 1850, and then back to Norfolk Island where his first daughter Mary Jane was born in 1851.

I hope that his helps.

Sorry I have just got your message and thankyou. Would you think that James may have been a convict or though his police records say he was free to colony? Where could I go to maybe find his arrival to Norfolk Island? I have contacted Tasmania but only got the police information. Regards Glendreath

I suspect that he was a convict first and was "promoted on-the-job" at a time when command of that penal colony was corrupt.  I have not been able to conclusively prove this however and I expect that it will take on-site research at Tasmanian Archives, or the Mitchell Library in Sydney.

James Stevens was subsequently dishonourably discharged from the Campbell Town Police Force, for a reason which I also have not established.

I have not yet found any precise records to show which ship(s) he or Mary travelled on to arrive at any Australian colony, or to travel to/from Norfolk Island.

I am a direct descendant - how are you related?

He is a bit of a mystery. James Stevens was my G/G/Grandfather on my mothers side. My mother was Edna Stevens -  her father was Norman James and his father was Henry, who was one of James Stevens sons. I have his marriage and death certificate but they only provided his birth country and approx. age. Mary Callaway (his wife) came here on Sir Charles Napier with her parents and siblings. Arrival was 17/2/1843. How exactly are you related?
I have traced the family forward but am having trouble going backwards from his marriage to Mary, even though I have only been at this for two years. Look forward to a reply with anything you may like to share. Cheers Glendreath

I am a GT/GT/Grandson via his second child James.  Not conclusive evidence but I suspect that he had a sister named Georgiana.   If it is the same man he was tried in the Old Bailey in 1838 - refer <www.oldbaileyonline.org>  He then was transported to Hobart in the Pyramus, arriving in 1839.   Good luck with the actual birth date and place.

Hi hobart1850,

A big welcome to RootsChat.  ;D

If you have the right person I note a detailed account of the trials here.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/04g1/

There appear to be three separate cases invoving this group of people listed in a row starting on page 691.

As a South Ozzie I don't have any convicts but when I look at this 1839 Pyramus Chap I note trial Warwick listed for Ticket of Leave 1849 also. These offences occurred in Middlesex.  :-\

Cheers Kris  :D

Now there is another one listed as Free 1849 - Tried Somerset, Transported for 10 Years 1839. Arrived 1840 on the Canton, to be employed prisoners barracks Hobart. I haven't found an age on him to date, may be worth trying to find out a little more about him..........Cheers Kris  :D

I have found some information on the James from the Pyramus in the Tas Archives. It provides a physical description of the man which may tell you if this is your man. It also lists him as a confectioner of Birmingham. Very handy  ;)

scroll to

Description List:      CON18/1/1 p503

view this record online

I have found that the record James is listed at image 260

Unfortunately there is no online description for the James arriving on the Canton

I also note a James Stevens died on the 8 Mar 1868 aged 53 years, ref 7232.

Cheers Kris  :D

It does appear there were more than 1 James STEVENS/STEPHENS marrying in Tas who were born around the same time. We have the two so far, though no age for one, and I see three marriages with men about the same sort of age, and just the one death provided above, listed under STEVENS. I did note one of the records I found for the Warwickshire convict listed him as Stephens. With the marriages I we have your man listed under Stevens and 2 others under Stephens.

James STEPHENS aged 26 = Sarah Mary TAYLOR aged 24 on 29 May 1843 ref 433 (I see no births)
James STEVENS age 32 = Mary CALLAWAY on 23 May 1850 ref 559 (I see 8 Births all STEVENS)
James STEPHENS age 37 = Bridget DREW 37 on 2 May 1853 ref 1229 (I see no births)

Just thought these other refs worth mentioning along with that death, since all involve men of about the same age.

Good Luck

Constable James Stevens marries Mary Callaway Hobart, 23 May 1850. He dies in Victoria, 23 July 1883 and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetry, with wife Mary and eldest child Mary Jane.
His death certificate names him as Constable James Stevens dying in Hotham, Victoria where he had lived for 4 years (after coming from Tasmania).
