Hello bones,
are you sure her name is Hannah Best?
On ancestry the transcription is Bed but on readling thereal copy it looks like Bell.

Free BMD has a possible marriage of Isabella Eggleston to Thomas Bell. She is with William and Elizabeth in 1851.

Sadly though in 1871 there is no Hannah with them. There are some possible deaths during the ten years between censuses.

I may be totally on the wrong track here as you may have her in later years but there does look to be some sort of mistranscription/misinformation.

best wishes

Now why didn't I look at that before I dug out the census info, I assumed that Bones knew the surname  ???

yes I saw that - looks the same - I did look them up last night (late) and could not find a Thomas Bell to link the families. I also saw (and remembered) that Isabella is a very popular name in that area - (seem to have seen them anyway).
I couldn't find Hannah later with Isabella and Thomas so it is all a bit circumspect. Awaiting Bones opinions.. :-\

Thanks everyone for the info. The name is Hannah Best as I have her marriage in Dec 1879 to Edward Perry and have her in 1881 census in Whickham and subsequent censuses. I also noted the William & Sarah Best the publicans also in the 1871 Tanfield census but they had 2 children 8yrs & 2yrs born in Grimsby. The names are definitely Best as I was using microfiche and not transcribed results.
Thanks again Bones

Hi Bones,

Do you have that marriage cert for Hannah/Edward Perry?  If not it might be worth getting to be sure of Hannah's father's name & occupation.

Perhaps Bones you are looking for Hannah Best who marries Edward Perry but we are finding Hannah Bell and that's where we are at cross purposes.
We are not looking at someone's transcriptions either - but images of the census.

I was intrigued by your reference to the 'Bests' in 1871 with the children born in Grimsby. They are Bell in 1871 on the image and in transcription in Ancestry and the children are 17yrs and 12 yrs- so perhaps you are referring to 1861 where they are Bell on the image but on Ancestry have been transcribed as Bed (as stated earlier).

It is really interesting this- Tanfield seems to have lots of Bells- I found your Hannah with Edward in 1881 and was trying to see if they were there in 1891 and 1901 - sometimes people have relatives with them who can offer clues. I notice that 1891 has a William Bell, 44 yrs-a  Farm Bailiff who has been transcribed as Bett ???

So finally, you know who you are looking for and that is Hannah Best who married Edward Perry. As Barbara says, the marriage certificate will give you her father's name and you hopefully will find her then.

best wishes
heywood

sorry- I keep going on but I am only trying to help- honestly

The 1871 Best family that Barbara found before are here in

1861: Class: RG9; Piece: 3730; Folio: 57; Page: 30 Civil Parish: Collierly and Pontop

Dipton

Robert Best 22 yrs lab on roads b Hamsterley
Mary 23 yrs b Houghton le Spring
Hannah 1 yr   ditto

none of this is conclusive but shows how hard it is without the certificate
