Title: 1861/71 census Protheroe
Post by: kerob on Monday 06 August 07 06:56 BST (UK)
I am trying to find out if the Emmeline Protheroy death 1878 listed in the UK free BDM is my girl.  It would be a great help if someone could look at the 1871 census (or 61) for me.  Her surname should be Protheroe & her death was listed at St George Hanover Square, a birth place hopefully would be Bristol or Sussex about 1804.
Thank you

John is a widow in 1881 (RG10/100) so the 1878 entry seems likely.

1851 London PO Directory

Protheroe John jun. metal broker 12 Birchin Lane.

Can't see him in the 1856 or 1859 London Directories or in the 1861 census

Thank you ShaunJ for the extra, re John Protheroe, until I looked at the census I had no idea what her second husbands Christian name was; all fits with the Protheroe family being merchants etc. from Bristol.

John Protheroe junior of Bristol is mentioned in the Gazette in February 1842 in the context of bankruptcy proceedings. There are other mentions in other editions which may be worth a read including an earlier Protheroe vs Protheroe case which give the date of death of John Protheroe of Clifton in 1819 .

Here's the Gazette search page

I didn't know of the existence of this gazette, might be a great source of information as Emmelines family were all prominent people.  Found online the Gentleman's Gazette which has been helpful also.

Just had a read of the gazette issue you quoted , is it completely devoted to bankrupts?

Kerob,
The Gazette is the official journal of record in the UK. Not just bankruptcies and notices for potential claimants to estates, but also military appointments, medals, mentions in despatches etc.
