Could someone please look up in 1851 Census
Mary Jane Russel (l) bc 1849 Chatton
Ellen (Eleanor) Russel(l) bc 1851 Chatton.
Am trying to find their parents as in 1861 were with
grandmother Mary Rutherford in Eglingham
.
Thanks

Hi
I have looked and failed. Perhaps someone local will have better luck. There are some possibles but none seem to be in the right area and it is possible that Ellen was born after the census so we cannot use her asa check. Could you go at it another way by tracing the grandmother back to see who her children were? Assuming it was a daughter then you need to look for a Rutherford marriage to a Russel. An easier option is to get a birth certificate - if you can afford it - or search for baptisms. The parish records might have lots of information about the family.

This looks like them in 1871, but mother's name (if she is the mother) is hard to read, could be Jesse or Jane and also not sure if widow or married, perhaps someone else could check the ref and see what they think:
RG10/5121 fol.9 p.12/13 Broom (?) House, Tynemouth
John Mowat head m 48 Farmer 55 acres North'd Wooler
Ellen " wife m 47 Scotland
Thomas " son 11 Scholar North'd North Shields
Charles " " 10 " " "
Jesse(?) Russell visitor wid(?) 42 Dressmaker Scotland
Mary J " " unm 22 " North'd Chatton
Ellen " serv " 20 Domestic Servant "
Jane Davison " " 10 " " North'land --(?)--
Robert Russell " " 24 Farm Servt Lab " Broad --?--
Perhaps they were visiting in Scotland in 1851

I think all three say 'unm'., as does Robert Russell (who may be 20 as well).

Not sure where my past post went - lost in the ether. Anyway I also think it says unmarried and I think there is another Russell family at the top of the page who might be worth a look. Writing is very hard to read though. I could not make out Robert's birth place. A brother do you think? Cousin?

This looks promising in 1851:
1851 HO107/2422 fol.369 p.2
Broadstruther, Selby Forest Northumberland
Charles Russel head m 62 Shepherd Scotland
Jennet " wife m 57 "
John " son u 23 Shepherd "
Jane " dau -- 28 -- Servant "
Charles " grandchild 6 North'd Broadstroth
Robert " " 5 " "

I found the family of Charles the Shepherd in 1861, but he seems to have a a son Charles 16, same age as the Charles listed as grandson on 1851, very confusing
I think the best thing is to get Mary Jane or Ellen's birth cert,

Pushing it for the wife to have had such young children if her age is right. I wonder if they are Jane's??

That's what I wondered too, it's the same Charles who had grandson Charles in 1851, but in 1861 he has a wife called Anne, not Jennet, so it's all a bit iffy...
best start with a birth cert :)

To start at the beginning....1841 Selby's Forest Northumberland
HO107/833/31/5 F4 p6
Charles Russell 50 Shepherd
Janet 50
Janet 17
John 13
Anne 7
next household
Robert 25 Shepherd
Charles 20 " all born Scotland
Remeber ages were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841.
There is a Rutherford family a couple of houses on.

Have found Jesse in 1861 census visiting former employeer John Mowat.
She is still unmarried. So if she wasnt a Rutherford who married a Russell, I
now have to work out relationship to Mary Rutherford if not grandmother.
thanks guys..

Any sign of Ellen (I think born Sep Qtr 1850) and Mary Jane
in 1851 since they are not with mother Jane/Janet/jessie. Found Robert with Grandma Jane in 1861 (though
shows his age as 10).
