Title: Some help with place names?
Post by: mhrjh14 on Saturday 04 August 07 15:08 BST (UK)
Hello. I have and Elizabeth married to Joseph Copeland whose place of birth in the 1861 census is  given as Attrick Cumberland  and in the 1851 as Uttrick. The only place that I can find which might fit is Ettrick in Scotland but would be grateful if anyone with a better knowledge of Cumberland could shed some light? Her husband was born in Wetheral (I think! difficult writing in census) and her sons in Hesket before they moved to Durham.  ??? :DThank you Maggie

and in the 1851 as Uttrick.

1851 census seems to give the birthplaces of Joseph and Eliz COUPLAND as Wedrel

I agree 1861 says Attrick - no idea where it could be.

1861 image clearly says Wetheral.  I expect Attrick is a small hamlet somewhere in that area.   They obviously lived there for a while as the first children were born in that area too.
I cannot find a large scale map of that bit - every other area in the country just about but not there!

Thank you Elizabeth. Great site ...my husband loves old maps so will be delighted with it!. Thanks for your comment Andrea...I did wonder if there was a place called something like Attrick or Uttrick in the area...maybe a local person would know? ...but as the census was taken in Durham where they wouldn't know Cumbria then the ennumerator may have just written what he thought he heard and it could be anywhere!! I can't find any records of the christening of Joseph though the Wetherel records are on the IGI....maybe they were non-conformist? Oh well.... :(

I know it's not much help with Elizabeth's birthplace, but is this the family on the 1841 census?

Whickam, Durham

Joseph Coupetain   35  Ag Lab
Elizabeth "   "          25
William  " "                5
Joseph  "  "                3
Jane   "  "                   9 months

They are living at Low ??  I can't make it out.

I've looked at all kinds of maps and genuk etc, but can't find anything that even resembles Attrick/Uttrick.  Could she have been saying Hesketh maybe, and was heard wrongly?

Hi

Not sure if I'm confused here but Whickham, Durham is nowhere near the the A69 between Brampton and Greenhead.

Whickham is just to the West of Gateshead  :-\

Just had a look on the census image. It's Low Team - now the Team Valley area :)

Low Team, Dunstan, Whickham, Durham

Gadget

Could the original queried place be Orton Rigg, SW of Carlisle?

Sorry, my fault :)

I didn't make myself clear.  On the 1841 census, they are actually living at Whickam, Durham.  So the Low ??? would be in Durham, not near Wetheral.

I think you probably have it there Gadget.  Orton Rigg, said with a Cumbrian accent to a Durham person could have sounded like 'Attrick/Uttrick'.

Hi Elizabeth  :)

I think there was some confusion  :-\

Rosemary (subaru) found a possible for the family in 1841 living at Low ?, Whickham, Durham. Then bingorudd suggested Low Road.
Neither postings referred to the original Cumberland place name so I just wanted to clarify things.

Regards

Gadget

Just a thought - can you get any of their birth certificates which may give the place name more accurately.

Thank you to all who have replied here...sorry i didn't get back sooner...been on holiday! Thanks especially to Gadget... I think its very likely to be Orton Rigg...right area, near enough to Wetheral where her husband was from. The Great Orton records are on the IGI but sadly she didn't seem to marry there so may be another brick wall till I can find her maiden name...still I'll know where to look now.  :D
Rosemary....Yes that was the right 1841 address...they moved to Durham between 1838 and 1840.
Judy.....Elizabeth was born in c 1794 so before birth certs, but thanks to all for your suggestions.

If you get a birth cert of one of the later (after 1837) COPELAND children, it will give the mother's maiden name.  That may enable you to find the baptism of a suitable Elizabeth on the IGI.
