Hi All
Can somebody please tell me where I can get the Parish Records for Witton Gilbert and Long Newton. I am trying to track my husband's ancestors, Newby and Whitehead. I have looked on GENUKI, IGI and BIVRI and can only find incomplete births and marriages on all of them. I have searched the internet and can't find any sites which have these records. Do I have to go to Durham to do a search?
Also, to make matters worse, the Whiteheads lived in Eston in Yorkshire before they went to Long Newton and I am having the same problems finding the records for Eston.
I have got incomplete records for them from about 1719 but would like to be absolutely certain I have the right parents before I add to the family tree.
Help and advice would be much appreciated. Must be my age but I'm really confused by the parishes and districts in Yorkshire and Durham!
Regards
Ruby

Who and what are you looking for in Witton Gilbert?
Matthew Newby and Frances Lawson married at Little St. Mary's Durham 25 Feb 1748, both of this parish, entered in the Witton Gilbert parish record. There are many such entries for marriage at Little St. Mary's Durham
The baptisms you find in the IGI extracted records are as they are in the parish record. Father's name and mother's first name, no place of birth or occupation of the father. So those records are as complete as they are going to get.
Ther are no Newby's or Whitehaead entries from 1813-1839 in Witton Gilbert.
Burials:
27 Oct 1753 John son of Matthew and Frances Newby
25 july 1764 Frances daughter of Matthew and Frances Newby
20 Jan 1772 Matthew Newby
Frances Newby, died 24 Dec 1807, buried 27 Dec 1807, age 86, widow of Matthew Newby, woodman, and daughter of John Lawson, tailor.
this could be Frances' mother: burial Elizabeth Lawson, wife of John Lawson 16 Jan 1763
John Lawson, the elder, 21 Nov 1763
Hope this helps,
Janis

Hi Ruby,
I'm researching the same Whiteheads. I managed to trace them back to about 1591 in Eston and at some stage John Whitehead (b. 1821) moved to Long Newton, when he married Elizabeth Newby of that area. In the 1851 Census their son (also John - born 1847) is from Stockton, Durham - so it appears they had moved again. His son, John Henry, seems to have been born in Coatham - they really got around after 2 centuies of living in one place! I'd be interested to know if you found any Parish Records for Long Newton or any of the other places. It would also be interesting to know who the common ancestor is between your husband and I.
Kind regards,
Sheri

Many many thanks to you all for your replies - sorry not to have responded sooner but bloomin' virgin broadband has been down since Wednesday morning - only just come back on! Withdrawal symptoms have been terrible!
The information about Matthew Newby b 1719 in Witton Gilbert and later recorded in Long Newton is the right Matthew and is my husband's 5x great grandad.
The Newby line goes like this
Matthew b WG 1719 m Frances Lawson
Matthew b WG 1760 m Milcah Husband
Matthew b LN 1796 m Mary Thompson
Elizabeth Newby b 1820 LN m John Whitehead b 1819 Eston
The Whitehead line goes like this
Matthew b 1591 Eston m Margaret Wheatley
Robert b 1628 Eston m Jane Lawly
Robert b 1666 Eston m ?
Thomas b 1707 Eston m Mary Bartram
Thomas b 1738 Eston m Eleanor Gant
Marmaduke b 1779 Eston m Aley Robinson
John b 1819 Eston m Elizabeth Newby
William b 1860 Long Newton m Eliza Hare
Their daughter Edith born in Middlesbrough 1892 was my husband's grandmother.
She married Thomas Baker who was a boilermaker in the shipyards on Teeside. His family was originally from Cheshire, saltmakers and then angle ironsmiths and boilermakers. They must have moved back to the north west after their marriage as my husband's father was born in Liverpool. The shipbuilding tradition carried on as Thomas and his father both went to work for Cammell Lairds in Birkenhead.
I have documentation for most of this but I am missing a link between the Matthew Newbys born in 1760 and 1796 ( I only have a submitted record from the IGI). Also, I only have Edith Whitehead's birth certificate but not her parent's marriage certificate. I have sent off for it but it hasn't arrived yet so cannot verify.
So, Sheri, I guess you and my husband must be related through common great great grandparents, John Whitehead and Elizabeth Newby.
Gina, I was interested to see the recent inscription from Long Newton, there must still be Whiteheads living there.
Its great to be back online and to receive such helpful information and also find a new relative!
Many thanks.

Welcome back Ruby,
I know what it's like, having only got back on line myself - our computer crashed and we had to get a new one (luckily most of my family history was saved on a popular genealogy site ;) and most of my photos were saved on a portable hard-drive)
I noticed you have John Whitehead (b. 1819, married to Elizabeth Newby) as the son of Marmaduke (love that name) & Aley Robinson. I have his father as John Whitehead (b. Eston 1771) & his mother as Ann Harling (b. Guisborough abt 1785).
Now that doesn't mean you're wrong - I got this info from a chap in Canada and he got it from someone else. He recently said he'd found something 'possibly wrong' in his Whitehead tree and that he'd get back to me once he's sorted it out. So it could be this - perhaps my great X 4 grandfather is Marmaduke and not John??
Great to be in touch with someone else whose researching the same family!
Please send my regards to my "new cousin" ;)

Hi Sheri
Glad to finally have made contact with you - terrible when technology lets us down.
Marmaduke is definitely the father of John, I have a BIVRI record and a Pallots and also the copy of the Eston Parish Register produced in 1924. You can trace the line right back.
I'll send you my email in a pm and we can swop information.
Hubby sends his regards too!
Cheers

Tom,
Under Ruby's mam's picture is a little scroll. It is either dark green or bright green. Dark--ofline, bright--on line and logged in. You can click on that and send a personal message. She will be notified when she logs on or by email--rather both. You can then through that system give personal email addresses if you wish.
