Hi,

I picked up from another link that you know of a Charles Picknell, my maiden name is Picknell and on my family tree I have a picture of Charles Picknell approx 1829 with his wife Sophia Blackman.  I believe they had 10 children could this be the same Picknell?  If I the right person do you have any details of  his siblings or parents.

Many thanks.
Tam

Hi and welcome to rootschat
Can you give an idea of which part of Sussex they were from.  It is a very large county.  There is no marriage pre 1837 for Charles Picknell on the Sussex Marriage Index but there was a Picknell family in Cuckfield for instance at around that time.

Hi Again

Doing a bit more digging, it looks as though the PICKNELL family were settlers on the America Ground in Hastings

See my web site - www.Rootschat.com/history/hastings for more details on America Ground story

The 1828 census of the America Ground shows

Picknell Edward, Lessee, Hastings Carpenter
Picknell jnr William, Lessee, Hastings Carpenter
Picknell Snr William, Lessee, Hastings Carpenter

and there was a Charles Picknell of the Holy Trinity Parish (America Ground) son of William & Mary Picknell, Carpenter, baptized at St Clements on 14th August 1807

There are several more children to William & Mary - Mary, Sarah, Richard Stephens,

Charles Picknell, who married Sophia Blackman, is my great great grandfather. Surprisingly I seem to have the same photo as Roxy2811! Their daughters Mary Ann (b 1854) and Amelia (b1867) are both my great grandmothers! I have all the usual BMD and census records but I would be interested in any other information about the Picknells of Hastings, particularly any photographs. Thanks :)

Hi Steve,

My G.Grandfather was Frederick Picknell, Amelia's brother which I guess makes us cousins, I have hopefully sent you a personal message.

Hi Tam (Roxy 2811),
Sorry this is the first time I have used chatrooms so I'm not sure exactly what to do. I could not work out how to send a personal message. I will have to work out how to send photo's.
I have ones of Amelia and Mary Ann and a few old postcards of Hastings. I have found that Frederick had three daughters, Hilda, Lilian and Winifred. I new Winifred, she lived near me and died about  20years ago. I also have a rather nice piano stool which was made by Frederick, he was a carpenter and joiner. I also have some recent photo's of where the Picknells lived.
Which of frederick's daughters is your grandmother?
I will also try and send you the photo I have of Charles and Sophia to see if it is the same as yours.
