Title: GLASS FAMILY
Post by: thommoje on Friday 03 August 07 00:03 BST (UK)

Joseph Rae Glass ( 1871 - 1941) and his wife Janet (Rae) Glass ( 1873 - 1950) lived out their lives in Aberdeen, having moved from Glasgow. Their children , Thomas 1902 and Margaret 1904 were born in Glasgow. I know there was also a Samuel , but have no detail.
An old letter found among some photos suggests that there may have been some other "wee Glasses ".
Joseph , Uncle Joe , was the younger brother of my Grandmother ( Eilzabeth Glass  / Hislop ) and I wonder if there are any remaining members of that family in Aberdeenshire.
Joseph Glass and " Jenny" , his wife lived at 10 Northfield Place and  a daughter Sarah King ( who signed her mothers death registration ) lved nearby at 24 Esslemont Avenue.
I would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of this family,
                                      Regards, Thommoje

I am the son of Joseph Rae Glass who was the nephew of the Joseph Rae Glass who had a ham curing business in Aberdeen. As a boy my Father was taken to Aberdeen to learn the Ham Curing Business. The advent of the 1st. World War put paid to that career and he served in the battle zone, but saw no action . He married my mother in the early twenties. (*) My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Liddell. I am aware of relatives called Hislop and I am trying to trace them I would be interested in hearing from anyone who recognises this information. John Glass

Posted on behalf of Iain,

"I would like to  continue. I have discovered the burial lair of the Hislop family in the Western Necropolis in North Glasgow and would like to let Jean know about it. I did this by going into the
site for the Western Necropol is,Glasgow and then going into Memento Mori and Scrolling down to burials and lairs where you will find a list of the people buried in the lairs. This circumvents the avariciousness of Glasgow Coroporation who charge quite large sums for basic information. The Western Necrropolis is a few miles north of the area of Glasgow where I grew up. It is also not far from the area of Glasgow where the Hislop family were domiciled. It is also the cemetary where the mass graves of those killed in the devastating World  War 11 air-raids on Clydebank are buried.I suspect that there was a little colony of Hislops and Patricks living close to each other ina small area bounded by Castle Street, St Mungo Street and Parliamentary Road, this is deep in the heart of what was the mediaeval core of Glasgow. All that remains is the magnificent early mediaeval cathedral, and the oldest house in Glasgow, the 15th Century Provand's Lordship, where Mary Queen of Scots stayed when she visited Glasgow .I have an early  Samuelmemory of being taken to visit the Patricks, and or the Hislops, when I was a child. St Mungo and Glebe streets are no longer in existence but there will be records of the tenents who lived there in the Mitchell Library and in Edinburgh.
I dont know what the format for Roots is but tell Jean if she wishes to make direct contact with me I am now in a more settled situation and would be glad to here from her'
List of People buried in Lair 1700 to1774
1700 Harriet Hislop(nee Carmichael)
1771 Hislop 01-05-1915
1772 Hislop MARY(nee GLASS) 25-05 1892.
1773  Hislop Samuel 17-04-1925
1774 Hislop Thomas 05-01-1916

Dear God-It looks like the family may have lost two sons in W.W.1 and possibly Mary to childbirth."
