Title: Steen
Post by: orphanannie on Wednesday 01 August 07 21:46 BST (UK)
Hi, All,
According to Cheshire BMD records, a Ralph Steen married an Agnes Elizabeth Steen in 1927 in Poulton, St Luke, Wirral.  Can anyone tell me if they were related?  Cousins maybe?
Regards,
Annie.

Hi Annie

From various census and the http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

It looks as if they could be cousins, best to get thier marriage certificate to make sure of fathers names, but here is the details I think may be right.

1901 census shows Ralf Steen (b c1896) father James (b c1868) mother Agnes (b c1869)

1901 census shows a Ralf (b c1898) Father Ralf (b c1876)
Mother Catherine (b c1877)

1901 census shows Agnes (b c1899) father George (b c1866)
Mother Anne (b c1866)

There is this family in Poulton cum Seacombe in the 1881 census who look as if they belong to the above.

RG11-3592-F62  6 St James Street

Charles Steen head marr 39 brickmaker Birkenhead
Elizabeth wife 35 Seacombe
George son 15 brick lab. Birkenhead
[James son 13 St Helens
William son 11 Seacombe
Elizabeth daug 9 Seacombe
Ralf son 5 Liscard Cheshire
Charles son 1

hope this helps

To Peterbennett.
Many thanks for that.  I know where the two Ralfs fit into my family, but did not know of Agnes.  I now have something to work on.
Regards,
Annie.

To Peterbennett,
Hi,again.  I have looked on the 1901 census online and, using the information you gave me,I can find no trace of George Steen, c 1866, from Birkenhead.   The only one I can find is a George Steen, aged 32, born in Abergavenny.  Can you tell me how you did it, please.
Regards, Annie.

Hi

Don't know which search data base you are using but it is possible that the name is mistranscribed. This result can be found using the Ancestry index.

1901 RG13-3406-Folio 53 Page 13  24 Sherlock Street Poulton cum Seacombe

George Steen head marr 35 gas stoker Birkenhead
Anne wife 35 Wallasey
Isabella daug 12 Wallasey
Anne daug 10            ~~~
Georgina daug 8  ~~~
George Thom son 6       ~~~
Bessie daug 4       ~~~
Charles William son 2  ~~~
Agnes daug 1       ~~~
John Steen Brother unmarr 19 ag/lab Liscard Cheshire
Thomas Steen Brother 19 unmarr labourer oil mill Birkenhead
Charles Steen Bro/in/law 21 marr ~~~~~~~~~ Liscard
Agnes Steen sis/in/law marr 20 Wallasey

Although the actual census page states Charles as brother/in/law I think it could be brother.

Charles Steen married Agnes Jane Huntingdon at Wallasey St Mary 1901   from the http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

hope this helps

Many thanks, Peter.
I used 1901 census online .com.  There was nothing listed for George.  I have had the same problem before when looking for other ancestors.
You have been a great help.
Regards,
Annie.

Agnes & Ralph may well have been first cousins. My g.g.grandfather was
Charles Steen born in 1842. His son George (b 1865) married Annie Huntingdon & had a daughter Agnes (b 1900). Another son James (b 1868ish) married Agnes Watkins & had a son Ralph (b 1895), so they could well have married. I haven't researched that far. Another son, b 1885 Thomas was my g-grandfather. Another brother Charles (b 1880) married Agnes Jane Huntingdon. Another of the brothers was called Ralph - a family name! The Huntingdons may well be sisters - one day I might have time to look into it!

Hi, Pauly,
Thanks for that.  The Huntingdons were sisters.  I have a lot of info on the Steen/Watkins families.  Agnes Watkins and James Steen were my G Grandparents.  Their daughter, Agnes born 1904, was my paternal Grandmother.   Plus my father is a Ralph!   If I can help you with anything, please ask.
Regards,
Annie.

Thank you for the reply, Annie. Charles Steen (b 1842) appears then to be a common ancestor of ours. I have been looking at Charles Steen's line and his wife Elizabeth Upton - but only got back one generation further - Dodd & Taylor. It seems to be a dead end, but I've got plenty of other relatives to look into!

Hi, Pauley,
I have marriages and families for all of the sons of Charles and Elizabeth Upton, except for John c 1882, Thomas c 1885 and Robert c 1889.  I know where most of them were in 1901.
I wonder if you could tell me the name of Thomas' wife please.
I have found a death for a Robert Steen in 1901, the right age.  Do you know if it is this Robert?
Regards,
Annie.

P.S.  My Uncle thinks the wife of Thomas was Ethel Roberts.  Is that right?

Annie - I don't know about John or Robert - but Thomas was my great grandfather. He married Daisy Apter on 6 Aug 1905 at St Nicholas Church near the Pier Head in Liverpool. The Apter family originally came from Devon.
