Title: Ogbourne St George,Wiltshire
Post by: Raylen on Wednesday 01 August 07 14:07 BST (UK)
Hello to everyone

Can someone please tell me if Ogbourne St George,Wiltshire is anywhere near Baydon please.

I have Charles Tuck married to Sarah.  (Maiden name, date and place of marriage not confirmed.)
They had children Thomas-b1751, John-b1753, Stephen-b1760, William-b1766 and Mary-b1761 who were all born in Baydon.
I have found a marriage for Charles Tuck to Sarah Strowd in 1751 at Ogbourne St George,Wiltshire and was wondering if someone could confirm that this marriage produced the children I have listed.

Thanks for any help or advice,
Raylen

Hello Raylen

Baydon is approximately 30 miles north east (ish) from Ogbourne St George.

I am afraid this is all I can help you with, hope it helps.

Thank you Ewan for your reply.

At least I seem to be in the right area with this family.

Hopefully someone can confirm the births of the children for me now  :)

Sorry I have to disagree with Ewan.  I used to live in Swindon which is only a few miles from Ogbourne St George and it is only about 10 miles from Baydon.  I tried  to attach a map to show you but I wasn't successful.  However, basically, today, you have to drive round 3 sides of a square to get between the two villages, but I'm sure in the 1700s it would have been possible to walk straight over the fields, probably 2-3 miles.  Ogbourne is a village with desirable properties, large houses, thatched cottages etc.  Baydon is on the edge of the Berkshire horse racing villages, although still in Wiltshire.

Hello Liz,

It gives me hope that I am on the right track with this family :)

Hello Raylen,
I hope you get to read this as I have juped onto the end of a very old post.
Have you been able to verify the Tuck / Strowd connection? I am a decendent of the Baydon Tucks, Charles Tuck 1824-1893 was my gggrandfather.
I have found many Stroud's in the Baydon parish registers. I think the connection very likely despite the different spellings.

Welcome Ian!

It seems we are related.
Charles Tuck  1824 - 15/4/1893 is my GGG Grandfather  :)

I have to admit I've not done a lot of work on this side of the family
for a while now but 2011 is the time to get back  to it.

I'd be glad to make contact with you to see where you fit into
the tree, so I have sent an IM (instant message) to you
with my email address.

Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Folks,

Agree with Liz. The defined villages we know Baydon and Ogbourne St George are relatively close to each other today - about 6 miles by the road we have to use today, but in years gone by there would have bene a more direct route across country shortening the distance to about 5 miles or so.

Here's a map showing how close the two villages are to each other.

What you may not notice from the maps is how hilly it is

Just thought you might like to know that Baydon is the highest village in Wiltshire and is a short walk away from the Ridgeway.
