Hi all ;D
I know many of you are suffering from the same thing I am .... total dedication to the finding of dead people, the unravelling of their lives and wanting to meet them and ask questions .....
Not only am I absorbed in my own family's past , I am intriqued with helping others find their people ;D
I am addicted ! ;D :D :) I love it !!! I find it hard to get away from the computer once I am involved with a 'search' ..... eg : I run upstairs to make beds and run back down hoping I have a Rootschat reply in my mail :o (one day found myself in my Pj's at 3pm ....I ran around like a mad thing, trying to defrost something for dinner and spraying 'freshener ' all over the place to make it seem like I had been cleaning all day LOL)
I need to know that I am kind of ' normal' and not some loony, crazy woman LOL ::)

I need to know that I am kind of ' normal' and not some loony, crazy woman
The only reassurance I can give you is that you are no worse than the rest of us here... ;)

I know how you feel Deb
My husband goes away occasionally, work related, and I can't wait for him to go. Sounds terrible doesn't it?
Then I get to stay on the computer all day and half the night.

Hi Deb,
Of course you're normal (for a genealogist). ;D ;D ;D
Regards, Kathleen
-
I've been told there is no cure!
-
I am very much the same. I have lost whole days, weeks in fact sat infront of the computer searching. Of course this was easy when I was expecting my youngest. Now she's here I doubt she would recognise me without a lap top on my lap and a folder of brith marriage and cdeath certificates sat next to me.
Psst Deb: Get a slow cooker or a crock pot. Then all you have to do to make dinner is chuck all the ingredients in in the morning and leave it to cook all day. Looks as if you've been slaving away in the kitchen most of the day. ;)
-
Deb,
Thought you were describing my behaviour there for a moment! ;D ;D
One other thing. If the computer goes offline for any reason, for more than 24 hours, there is a tendency to rage around the house shouting cries of frustration punctuated every now and then by "Rootschat!" This is completely irrational behaviour for which there is no cure, and no intervention helps! ;D

I AM GETTING BACK TO FRONT AND UPSIDE DOWN WITH MY LAST POSTS

i spend so much time in yesteryear, i sometimes forget what year i'm living in.
said to OH the other night:
......oooh look she (family member) only died in 1908
ONLY!? (he said) that's near a hundred years ago!
oh aye (I said, shocked) does'nt time fly
bl**dy mad you are (he said, shaking his head)
LOL ;D

I do as much posting (& occasional research ) in the office when no-one's looking - I know I shouldn't but....
At home all I get is - "not on the computer again - you're becoming addicted" - but its true!
I suppose I could leave the wife, but she has got some very interesting lines to trace back...

Recently, when filling in an on-line form with my own details, I put 18.. instead of 19.. for my date of birth ;D
The site wouldn't accept it & it took me a few moments to work out why ;D ;D
Addicted to Family History? Who me? Never!!

Someone recently asked me if I use my computer very much. I told her about the work I'm doing to find my ancestors and their stories.
Her response was "Guess it's something to do."
Oh, it's much more than that. It's an interest in family and history. It's a way of connecting with others who have the same interests.
I realize that it is also a WONDERFUL OBSESSION. :)

LOL Deb, it's too hot to do anything today and I'm doing my part saving energy which means no laundry, no vacuuming and just relaxing ;D but I'll have to do a mad dash before hubby gets home, just so it looks like I did a little something today ;)

Hallelujah!!!! This proves that I,m not the only mental case out there! I can really identify with all of you. I sometimes feel soooo guilty when I realize I've spent an entire day on the pc looking for the long lost rellies, checking my emails every 1/2 hour, skipping from one family history web site to another (or minimizing at least 8 websites in my tool bar for future reference) only to look around and find there is a pile of dirty laundry to be dealt with, the beds are unmade (and it's 4.00pm), the cat is in the last throes of starvation and the dining room table is covered in BDM certificates, photocopies of diaries, and other family history records. Slack housewife??? NOOOOOO Obsessed genealogist??? YEEEESSSSS
All is not lost, however. Starting a new job next week and you guessed it. It's right next door to the local family history society. You can guess where I'll be spending my lunch hour each day ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, creepy eh! Specially when you want to talk to 'em.
Are we necromaniacs, necrophilliacs or necromancers :o ;D ;D ;D
but it's so much fun when you find someone else who's addicted.
-
Hey Geniecolgan!
Can you explain necromaniacs, necrophilliacs or necromancers for me?
I know I probably fit into one of these categories, but.....................which one??????? ;D

I'm glad it's not just me. My son had mislaid his birth certificate so I sent off for a copy. Back came the envelope - containing a partial refund because there was no record of his birth. What!!! I remember it very clearly. ;D
After reading the form again carefully, I realised I had given his date as 188* instead of 198*! Cost me extra money to send for the right dated cert and several extra weeks wait for it.

What a brilliant thread! I thought I was the only person who dashed round madly at the last minute trying to make it look like I had spent the day hoovering, or rushing up to the computer the moment my hubby goes out the door to play tennis ("no that's fine, dear, you go out and enjoy your hobby...I'll spend the evening on mine") or has the ironing board permanently up in the same room as computer, so in between posting and looking for replies I can sneak in the odd shirt. ("What's that funny smell? Whoops, where did that last half hour go?")
-

I gave up pretending to have done housework years ago... no one minds that much as long as there are clean ironed clothes to wear when needed and food to eat. ;D I do run the Vac over the floor every other day.. only takes a few minutes... and makes a bit of a difference.
Mr Karenlee and the teenager can look after themselves pretty much... it's just the smallest one who has to be catered to these days...

Bron,
Here you go.... a definition:-
"Necro- from the Greek, Dealing with the dead"
"Necromancer- a Wizard who calls on the power of the dead".
In other words we like playing with our dead ancestors.

We are doing a great service in this time of conserving water, electricity, fuel for vehicles, etc. when we save up our dirty dishes, ignore some household chores, and we stay at home. ;D ;D

I am supposed to be sorcing leaf shaped table confetti for my wedding in just little over a month but instead I am totally engrossed on the IGI Family Search. Praise be for families that where born, married and died in the same place for generations!
-
I'm in good company then! My collection of Family History stuff is threatening to take over the dining room! When I'm onto a lead I'm really restless until I can get to the records office again, my latest trip to London gave me a good lead, but I haven't any more time off this year to come!!!!!!! I'll have to wait until next year to continue that branch.
I too look for emails every day hoping to find some new branch of the family, spending so long replying to 'new family members' I don't get much research(or housework) done. :)
Daisy
-
I have a confession. Ask me where a bill, statement or reciept is in this house (even for the wedding suits) I have no idea. Ask me where someone birth, death or marriage certificate is I have them all safe in a folder stored in family and age order
-
Same here. Something else in the piles of "absolutely essential" material on my dining room table is the special album of very old pictures that I am assembling. Of course, to do that I need to have the sources of those photos -- a box of pictures and several family albums that I inherited.
I'm so glad that this true confessions thread was started. It's wonderful to know that we are not alone.

Think I'll have to change my avatar, then! Speaking of birth certificates............ I have BDM certificates for the GGGGrandparents, Uncles and Aunts, etc all filed in a nice safe folder in the filing cabinet but for the life of me I cannot find my son's birth certificate. Think it got lost in the move and I will have to request another one from the Australian Registry. My son really ribbed me about it and said "how come you know all the full names of the Booth family children dating back to the 1700's but you still get it wrong with your own two kids? :-[ :-[ :-[
Please tell me I'm not the only one that this has happened to.
Bron ;D ;D

Whew! Glad I am not the only one! I was beginning to worry about it! I spend more time on my computer now than I did when I was working!! ::)
Looks as if there is an outbreak of obsessive compulsive disorder {OCD} and we are all affected! 8)
It is not supposed to be infectious! I am beginning to wonder about that. ???
Thank goodness that I am not the only one making mistakes on the BMD certificates by typing the wrong century. :-\

This all sounds SOOOOO familiar!!
I was reading some of it out to OH last night, his comment was...'sounds a lot like you'
He's not interested in family history in the slightest, but I completely identify with the run round like an idiot half an hour before he's due in to make it look like I've been busy ;D ;D
-
My husband thought it was just my family who were obcessed by their dead relations. He used to say we were odd. He is not expounding this comment much these days as so many of our friends have asked me to research their families for them. Likewise no housework is done here only the basics. So glad I am in such good company.

I thought that this was very funny! Peculiar not ha ha! Although it is good for a laugh!!
Looked it up so I would know, because I have used both.
Oxford English Dictionary stuffy old journal but definitive text! says
census
• noun (pl. censuses) an official count or survey of a population.
— ORIGIN Latin, from censere ‘assess’.
I still prefer censi, it sounds better!! 8) even though I have never used it! I might now start a trend! Lets all write to Balderdash & Piffle at the OED they are researching all new words! We might have just invented one!

I gave away Ducks c60 years' ago, after my father tapped an unhatched egg from under the Mother Duck and it exploded into my face.
You have got to experience the H2S to believe the pong!
Took a week to wear off. Even the village mongrel dog would not come near me.
For the record -
"The platypus has perplexed scientists since its discovery by Europeans in the late 18th century. Here is a creature that has a furry body like most mammals, webbed feet and a bill like a duck, and a reproductive system that involves young being hatched from eggs before suckling from their mothers."

" Young EDO, son, unm, 10, stinky scholar living in dog house after duck egg exposion, b Aussie"....
LOL what I wouldn't give to see the censi give us that much info ROFL eg;
Francis Mitchell Waterfield , son , 10 , mother called called Mary Ann Waterfield..father down the rosd called Francis Mitchell ... ...he is unmarried and a shoemaker as is Mary Ann. She is a shoe binder, employed by Francis Mitchell, they love each other but are not willing to marry. She states that all 3 of her illegitimate children are fathered by the aforesaid, Francis Mitchell. He is unable to marry her as he is enjoying the single life without having to be responsible for all three sons ... she however still needs to work and support the 3 boys . Her father is rather annoyed by the whole situation but has decided not to involve himself in this unfortunate matter as it may bring about ostracization (is this a word?) from the community .

I thought that you meant this one, ;)
I had a duck billed Platypus when I was up at Trinity
With whom I soon discovered a remarkable affinity.
He used to live in Lodgings with myself and Arthur Purvis
And we all went up together for the Diplomatic Service
I had a certain confidence, I own, in his ability;
He mastered all the subjects with remarkable facility;
And Purvis, though more dubious agreed that he was clever,
But no one else imagined he had any chance whatever. ::)

Hi DJ,
Do you really want to know? I used to 'lurve' rabbit; in pies mostly! well you did ask!! ;)
We used to breed and show them when my Daughter was little, she won no end of cups and rosettes. 8)
What is your connection with Rabbit? Apart from writing to me I mean? Te he! ;D
Just invent a time machine and do it! It is called Family History I think! ??? I was climbing brick walls all the time, but it is so much easier to burrow under them, now I am as mad as the rest of them! An Addict I am ashamed to say :-[
Rabbit B ;D
PS There is no such thing as normal is there? Whatever normal is!
-
Hi Rabbit, Pies ;D that's fine i used to eat loads of rabbit in France . Used to have a cheese and Wine shop and one old lady , if she could not pay for the goods, she would pay with dead rabbits.
NOW, i keep rabbits and so i switch from Roots forums to bunny forums :)
I'm obsessed with both ;) Even got the Bunny Mummy t shirt !!!!
Gone from the Bunny girl (only fancy dress) to bunny mommy ;D
At least it drags me away from the PC and then i lie in the grass , hay etc with bunnzies
DJ ;)

Hi DJ,
These days I don't have Rabbits, but sometimes get them from the Farmers Markets, to feed to the kites!
Never did the Bunny Mummy thing, not really my scene! Try as I might I cannot get soft about them. Have two lovely toy ones though. Lifelike friends, have a good website have a look! They have some beauties, and they don't have to be fed!!
Have you seen this:- [changing subject rapidly]
The rabbit raced the tortoise
and you know the tortoise won,
Mr Rabbit came in late
a little Hot cross bun!
