Does anyone know where Grimston is in Kent?
see this thread

I've never heard of it. I've looked at the KFHS list of Parishes & there's nothing there. Google suggests Grimston Gardens in Folkestone, Kent.

Thanks for looking.
All the references to roads etc. seem to be in Folkestone.

If you look on the place names list — http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/places/ there are 6 Grimstons but none are in Kent.

Looking at all the census years. There are 4 people listed as having been born in Grimston but one is a mistranscription of Greenwich.
However no one is listed as living in Grimston, Kent. ???
So perhaps it's a very small place or a mistake.

Been thinking about this ;)
Being as he was baptised in Darenth, I wonder if perhaps it is meant to say "Green St Gn" ie. Green Street Green ??? :-\

Hi Casalguidi ;D
If you take a look at the link i put up on the other thread, you'll see that i did in fact find a reference to "Grimston" in kent:
"Edward Stanhope, of Grimston, Kent, whose burial here is recorded on the 23rd October 1619"
but unfortunately, that still doesn't tell us where it is...Many thanks for putting up this thread though ;)

The more I think about it, the more I think it probably is/should be Green St Gn and not Grimston at all - I do stand to be corrected though ;D
Green Street Green would make perfect sense with him being baptised in Darenth and it would be interesting to see just where they were living at the time of the 1841 census.

Hi Cas,
After googling Green St.Gn,i think you must be right,it fits better than Grimston(wherever that is ???)

I noticed that there was an Emma Franklin in the same household in 1871 also born in Grimston Kent (a married sister perhaps?). In 1881 her birthplace is recorded as just Kent and in 1891 as Springhead Kent. She had died by 1901.
However, Springhead seems to be an area in/near Northfleet, just off the A2, so it is still in the right neck of the woods.

Next Day: I happened to go to Bluewater today (groan), so took the opportunity to look at Springhead. Well, it's one of those weird urban fringe areas (apologies to anyone who lives there): a mixture of grubby-looking countryside, chalk/cement quarries, industry and dollops of housing(mainly 1930s) here and there. I couldn't stop because of the confusion of diversions (lots of re-planning going on), huge lorries bearing down on me, etc. There was a big cemetery in Springhead Road, which might be useful if you can find someone who lives closer than me.
Green Street Green is about 5km away.

I have just had a look at the 1841 Census, and Casaguildi's hunch does seem to be the right one. Edward was in Green Street Green.
By 1851, the family (including little Emma, by this time) were in Perry Hill very close to Springhead - so I wonder whether Emma thought that was where she was born.
Just in case there was a Grimston in the area, I have posted a question on the Gravesend Historical Society forum.

Thanks for everything that you guys are doing on this , this is brill!!!!!!

I received the following answer from "Big-Doug", administrator of the Gravesend Historical Society site:
"I think the reply in the Rootschat Forum was correct, there is no Grimston in this area. Possibly a mistranscribed Gravesend or Green Street Green."
Thanks Doug. ;D
