Hi Guys,
I'm looking for information on Matilda "Cornwall" (if this is the right name), I can't find her on any census' between 1842/3 (when she was born - taken from ancestry 1881 census) and 1865 (when she married Edward Abraham King(?)).
She was born in Gravesend, her father's name (apparently) is "Stephen Cornwall", (father's name comes from a copy/image of marriage certificate between her and edward king), which I received from another rootschatter :-)
In trying to trace any family info re parents (or her pre marriage) me any my partner have run ourselves into an interesting shaped loop!
We also - in this loop - keep coming across a link with a gent called Alfred watson, but have no idea if/where he fits.
Any help greatly appreciated.

When was Matilda born?
Sorry - just seen it was 1842/3
-
Hi Istari!
Have you tried 'Cornwell'? Only I have that name in my tree and it has gone between the two spellings (including 'Cornall' in 1891). Most of mine come from Sussex.
Best wishes,
Lynne
Opposite is Eliza Cornwell nee Ash - born in Brighton

Struggling with this one. ???
In the 1871 census, is she the Matilda King, aged 28, occupation needlewoman, married to Edward King an unemployed coalminer with a son Edward aged 1 born Gravesend? Living at 4 George St, Stepney.
If so, her place of birth is given as Franfield, Surrey. ???
-
Hi I'm Istari's partner ;)
He's busy ancestor paper-shuffling at the mo ;D
Hi Dibley,We've tried cornwell,cornell,you name it,no luck
:-\
Hi Bearkat,Could i ask you what Edward King's place of birth is on the 1871 census? As we've got it as Gravesend/Darenth he was born 1840/42 so is about 2+ years older than her.
We do keep coming across a Matilda who's born in Framfield, but ours is(supposedly)born Gravesend :-\
She is turning out to be a difficult one ::)
Just noticed that we have them in the 1881 census, but there they also have a daughter called Elizabeth Matilda, who should be on the 1871 census as a 3 yr old, they DO have an 11 year old called William Edward in 1881.
-
I think the 1901 census says she was born Framfield, Sussex living in Cliffe at Hoo, Kent - where she was living in 1881 so I would suggest that her birthplace on the 1881 census is wrong ;)

Hi Casalguidi :)
Could you give us a listing of who's on the 1901 census please and the address they were at and also Edward Abraham's job,if it's listed?
Thanks

In 1871 Edward's birthplace looks like Grimston, Kent.
He is 30 years old.
-
By 1901 Matilda was 58, widowed and living on her own means.
Only one child at home - Hilda M aged 17 born Cliffe.
Living Rose Cottage, Cliffe at Hoo.

In 1871 Edward's birthplace looks like Grimston, Kent.

I've just looked for that on streetmap, can't find Grimston :-\
awkward b*ggers ain't they? ::)
Thanks for that Bearkat
Thanks for the 1901 stuff too ;)
I suppose it must be her !!!!!!
Interestingly enough i was "googling" for Grimston and found this: "Edward Stanhope, of Grimston, Kent, whose burial here is recorded on the 23rd October 1619"
From: 'The fabric of the church: Lady chapel and crypt', The records of St. Bartholomew's priory [and] St. Bartholomew the Great, West Smithfield: volume 2 (1921), pp. 74-90. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=51773. Date accessed: 29 July 2007.
So there WAS a Grimston..........
-
I 've never heard of Grimston either (bet casalguidi has ;)).
If he was a Kent coalminer I would expect him to come from the Snowdown/Tilmanstone/Bettshanger area.
In 1871 they are living at the same address as the FRANKLIN family - Richard was a porter and his wife, Emma, was also a needlewoman born Grimston, Kent.
-

No, she hasn't - at least not a place name ;D
However, Edward Abraham KING was baptised in Darenth (as was his sister Emma who later looks to have married Richard FRANKLIN) ;)

Thanks for that guys ;D
Although we have found out that Darenth was in Dartford district, not Gravesend as we expected ???
No luck with stephen cornwall, father of Matilda though, wondering if it was a made-up name for her marriage cert ???
-

Yes, but if this information (born Gravesend) is taken from the 1881 census only - what do all the others say ie.
1841
1851
1861
1871 Grimston (could be Green St Gn - Darenth)?
1881 Gravesend (could be a mistake if information given by somebody else)
1891 - was he still alive then?

Heres a possible for Matildas Father in 1861

Cant find Matilda under Cornwall or variants its possible she was illegitimate then she would have been registered in her Mothers name,But knew who her Father was and later took his name.

According to the IGI, somebody (a private researcher) has entered Matilda CORNWALL born 1842 Framfield, Sussex with parents Alfred WATSON and Elizabeth CORNWALL. There is also a brother listed - Stephen CORNWALL b1846 Framfield. Does this help find them?

Brilliant Cas so now we need a marriage of a Stephen Cornwall and Elizabeth.Still cant find Matilda in 1851 or Stephen the brother or Elizabeth The Mother.

and here's the marriage of Stephen CORNWAL to Julia BOWERS in 1868 at the parish church of St George, Gravesend. He was a stoker aged 22 with, again, father Stephen CORNWAL lab.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01sg/
One of the witnesses was Matilda KING so I think we can assume that this is probably Matilda's brother.
Casalguidi :)

Thats great so that confirms we have right family. But cant find a marriage of Stephen Cornwall to Elizabeth and still cant find them in 1851.Isnt it strange not to have had Elizabeths maiden name on marriage cert?Even if Father not mentioned .Only Stephen Cornwall i can find in 1841 so far is one i found earlier in 1861 so its not him. Will look again now.

Don't know if i'm putting thoughts in your head ,that you're not thinking here WL,but this Matilda is not Matilda Cornwall,as she was already married before 1871,to Edward Abraham King. We've no idea who that Matilda Hammond is ???

Elizabeth wife 46 b.Sussex
Diana dau 14 b.Sussex
Matilda dau 8 b.Sussex
Stephen son 5 b.Sussex

Casalguidi :)
-
Wow, this is an interesting family (if I'm on the right lines) ;D
Nearest I could come up with in 1841:
Blackboys Common, Framfield, Sussex
Elizabeth (surname hard to read but looks something like BUMSDEN) 35 ag lab b.Sussex
Dianna 3 b.Sussex
Thomas CORNWALL 15 b.Sussex
HO107/1116 folio 45 page 3
Casalguidi :)
