Hi,
I have just discoverd a knew branch of my family from forfar, but i am not sure where to start as i don't know the area very well, could somebody help me please ;D
The info i have is that the parents are Robert Milne and Elizabeth Webster. One of their kids George, was born 12 oct 1847 Menmuir Angus. He was my great great great granpa. He married martha steel in inchinnan, lanarkshire in 1870. He is described as a storekeeper.
Elizabeth died in nov 1901 at 19 montrose road, forfar. Her father was john webster, linen weaver and her mother was isabella lumsden (?)
I am having trouble finding the milnes on the census. I can find george and his wife in 1881 but that is it!
Could anyone piont me in the right direction? I would really appreciate that.

wow joe!
thanks, you are good at that! i can never find anything on the igi. i must be doing something wrong.
Thanks for the help. hopefully that will be enough to get started on this branch. It makes it harder because i don't know the area if you know what i mean. It's hard tto build a picture of their lives.
thanks again, caroline

poppysmum, Is that a typo re George's marriage?
The only similar marriage I can see in the IGI in 1870 is:
*George MILNE married Jane ALLAN, 6 Dec 1870, Inchinnan, Renfrewshire
A parent search in the IGI (enter George Milne in the father boxes, Jane Allan in the mother boxes, and select British Isles as the region) brings up the following children:
*Jessie Gemmel MILNE, b 7 Mar 1871, Shotts Lanarkshire
*Robert MILNE, b 14 Nov 1872, Govan Lanarkshire
*George John Gordon MILNE, b 28 Jul 1874, Govan Lanarkshire
There may well be more but the IGI cuts out ca 1875 for births from the Scottish Statutory Register.

hi pal,
i agree with jap on this one, i found george on the 1881 census with jane and not martha!!
which george do you have on the 1881?
do not wish to research the wrong george
Joe

Hi Joe,
It was George's son Robert who married Martha STEELE (in 1894). See:

I feel sure you'll be safe researching George & Jane!

you can go to this site and access the gazetteer

it's maybe not much, but it gives a a little help when trying to picture their lives.

hi you lot,
thanks for the help, especially how to use the family search site, i didn't know you could look for childen of a couple. i am going to sit down with all this today and try and get my head round it all. It is exciting finding an 'exotic' branch of the family :D I live in the scottish borders so it is quite far away ;)

hi joe,
sorry i don't know, the only one i know about is gladys, i do have a photoof a man who looks like gladys and my granny has wrote on the back that he looks lke a 'milne brother'.
I think i am going to have to maybe ask my granny if she knows anything about where granpas mum was born(gladys) i can't find them on the census either, i onloy know they are her parents from her marrage and death certificate.
it's all very odd.
-
I've just checked gladys's death certificat, she died jul 30 (today) 1952 age 52 and robert and martha are definetly her parents.
-
also, there is no sign of martha's death, i checked all the peopl with the names steel and milne and then i checked all the martha milnes but no luck :-\

Hi,
wondered how far you have gone now with your Milne's I have a Margaret Milne around 1725 in Arbilot, Angus. wondered if you have found a link there yet.
