Hi-
I have a wedding cert. for a Henry Moore and Elizabeth Fussell on May 9, 1847 in Bristol-St. Mary Redcliff. Henry's father is listed as Hugh Moore-farmer. There is no age for Henry Moore on the cert.-just "full age" listed. But is he was about 23ish in 1847 then he was born in 1824. If Hugh was about the same age, that would put his birth about 1800. I have done numerous searches and have not been able to find any Hugh Moore born about 1800 (+/- 10 years) that has a son named Henry.
Help please-is "Hugh" short for another name?? Also the street that Henry and maybe Hugo lived on at time of marriage was either Harry's or Warry's court and Redcliff Street.
Thanks for any help-

What was Henry's occupation when he married. It might help to find him.
There is a Henry of about that age in 1851 with wife Elizabeth
HO107; Piece: 1954; Folio: 392; Page: 1
Swinnel Road, St Philip & Jacob, Bristol
Henry MOORE, head mar 26, Maltman, born Somerset, Withypool
Elizabeth MOORE, wife mar 26, born Bristol, St Philips
Mary MOORE, dau 6mo, born ditto
plus 2 lodgers
There is a Hugh MOORE at Exford in Somerset in 1841, which is the Withypool area. May be a bit old as he was 71, an Ag lab.

Henry's occ was maltster so what you have found for 1851 is correct.
The Hugh Moore that you have found may be correct, who knows, as it is stated on the marriage cert. that he was a farmer. I think that agricultural labourer is pretty close to farmer. yes???
Also- thanks for letting me know that Exford is close to Withypool. However, 71 is kind of old. By the 1847 wedding-he would have been 77. He would have been about 54 years old when Henry was born. Would this have been out of the question back then??

The registration district covering Withypool/Exford is Tiverton, and so this death reg is a possible
Hugh Moore june qtr 1847 vol 10 pg 192.
If you're using FreeBmd, click on the registration district and then 'here' and you will get a list of the parishes covered by that district.
The Hugh Moore whose death was registered in Axminster, was a travelling draper in 1861.

1851, 1861 and 1871 he says born Withypool. 1881 says Bristol, and 1891 say NK Devon. Withypool is fairly close to the Devon border, about 5k, with Exford about 5k further away again.

Is the "he" that you speak of Henry or Hugh??
Thanks for the pointers as to distance of places so I can give something wlse a try. Are all of these places in Gloucestershire??
I keep searching..........anyone know if Hugh is short for another name or a nickname for something else?

He was Henry.
Withypool is in Somerset.
Hugh is usually a name on its own.

I have been doing more research and have a theory. I cannot find a Hugh Moore that had a son Henry (b. 1824/1825) anywhere.....I mean I opened my search up to the world!! There are other distant relatives that are stumped at this brickwall.
I now wonder if MoorE was really MoorS and somewhere along the line there was a permanent transcription error. There are a few places where I can see where the "s" might have been misinterpreted as an "e". I know that this is sometimes how names change throughout the years. I found a Hugh Moore that was born in Somerset and was a farmer(works with what was said on Henry's birth cert) that lived and owned 100 acres on a Burton Farm. The birth year-around 1800 would work for having a son b in 1824. Also he is a farmer. In the 1841 census, he lives with a brother it looks like. Then in the 1851 and 1861 census, he lives with a wife named Rebecca. On one of these census, they had a "visitor" named Elizabeth Squire which actually may be the same Elizabeth Squire that may have married a William Mitchell (other side of the family that I am researching...see other posts). I am wondering if this Rebecca is a second marriage and Hugh was married before to Henry's mom. However, since census only go back to 1841(remember Henry was b in 1824) and marriage records only go back to 1837ish, I cannot verify my theory.
Can someone with access to parish records, or knows something about Burton Farms and/or geneology..........please help me sort my theory.
Thanks-

If anyone can still help with this, I would appreciate it. I am still looking for the Hugh Moore connection.
Since Ag. labourer is close to farmer, maybe this would be the same person. However, is it possible since he is 71 years old, that Hugh was his grandfather and Henry didn't have a father there at his wedding as a witness. This could be the case since I am having trouble finindg anymore info on Henry(like siblings) since the census started in 1841.
If anyone can help give me more information on Henry....like childhood information(like siblings that may give a mother's name, etc) The only info that I have is that he was from Withypool, he married Elizabeth Fussell on May 9, 1847. They had a son, James (my line). They also had Mary, Caroline, Eliza, John, Elizabeth, and Emily.
I am at the point in my research that I need to start accessing the Parish records but I do not know how parish records work......how do I research them. Since I am in the US, is the Mormon church the best way to access them?
Thanks-
