Hi, My G,Grandfather was Ira Gomersall-born 1894 in Wakefield,West Yorks - Married Phyllis Wood Slee
My G,G,Grandfather was Lorenzo Gomersall - born 1865 in West Ardsley,West Yorks.(1871 Census) - Married Emma Brookes of Staffs
My G,G,G,Grandfather was Joshua Gomersall - born 1838 also in West Ardsley, West Yorkshire (1871 Census). - Married Margaret?
I am trying to find Joshua Gomersall's father, we have tried the parish records for West Ardsley & couldn't find a thing, if anyone has any suggestions I would be really thankful.
Also, if anyone would like any of my information on the Gomersall's please let me know also, I have informtion on the Slee family originating from Westmorland.

Hi
Have you found the family in the 1861/1851/1841 census of West Ardsley. If you haven't, I would think that that would be the best place to start looking in case any of the birth places differ. It's not uncommon for the wrong birthplace to be put on the form - especially if somebody else was supplying the information.
Have you not had any success looking for the marriage of Joshua G......... to Margaret?
Best wishes

Thanks for that we never found his wife's surname. As for the census forms for 1861,1851 & 1841 we haven't been able to access them at our local library. At the time we were only abple to see the census for 1871 onwards.

I think I have found him at 1837online,
births for July-September 1839,
Joshua Gomersall
District Wakefield
Vol. XXII
page 616
Hope it helps.

Brilliant! As you will have realised i'm new to all of this so please forgive me :-[.
I have another question now...
My G,G,Grandmother was called Ellen Slee, Born in Wakefield in 1879.
Apparently, she had a child by her brother in law, a William Dyson of Wakefield at the age of 18-resulting in my G,Grandmother Phyllis Wood Slee born.
Ellen Slee comitted suicide in June 1900 & we have a newspaper report confirming this to be true.
As my G,Grandmother was born out of wedlock & her father was her uncle, would Ellen Slee have been made to name him as her father? we can't think why my G,Grandmother has the name Phyllis Wood & Slee as her surname ???. She never really knew much about her mother as a family took her in at the age of 5, so we're discovering a whloe new branch of our family.

Generally, if one finds an illegitimate child with a surname used as a middle name, it is usually because that middle name is the father's surname. Like everything else though, there is always the exception to the rule.
Did she pretend that another man (WOOD) was the child's father at some stage?
Did she have a brother in law by the name of WOOD as well as Mr DYSON?
Maybe there was some other reason for her choice of name.
Ellen wouldn't have been compelled to name her baby after the father but it was quite common.
It certainly would be nice if you could find out .............
Best wishes

According to the news report of her suicide she was of "Unsound Mind" & had gone away - maybe the local lunatic asylum?
We also discovered that her mother a Hannah Slee was thrown out of her house for running a brothel! - so Ellen didn't have much going for her in her short life.
As for having a child by her brother in law it was a tale my g,grandmother(Phyllis) was told by the family who looked after her. This Mr Dyson had a pub in wakefield called The Dyson & everytime my mother was with her she would say her dad used to own that pub, although she never met him but, he was married to her older sister.
i never met my g,grandmother as she died in 1970.

This has to be them as my G,G,Grandfather was called Lorenzo & had a brother called Simpson & we could never work out why he was called Simpson Gomersall - he emigrated to New Zealand pre 1939 to a sheep farm.
