Hi Gadget
Thank you for finding the information look like the right family
Linda

Seem to be hiding in 1871 :(
When did John go to Australia?
Gadget
-
Hi Linda
Just thinking :) Knockan is right on the border of Ross-shire and Sutherland (not all that far from where I live at the moment) . So if you are searching for John and Jane's baptisms, it would be worth looking in both counties.
Regards

well done gadget,
who is this on the 1871?
1871 census- vessels, kilmory, north shields, inverness

Could be, Joe :)
I can't find any John, snr and Jane/Jean M(a)ckenzie at all at the moment. I'd like to hear from Linda about the emmigration before I go digging around for deaths, etc.
Jane/Jean must have been in Inverness in 1866 because of the birth.

Hi Gadget
The only 1 Mackenzie came to Australia in 1890 that was John Alexander McKenzie Jnr the son of John McKenzie & Jean McLean
Alexandrina Catherine McKenzie married Alexander Dimmack their daughter Pacifique Elleanor Dimmack she came to Austrilia in 1903 they the only two that I know so far.
Linda

Thanks for that info, Linda. I'll keep looking for the others - hope Joe (and anyone else) can join in the search :)

I see that Alexandrina married in 1885 in Glasgow and that her parents were alive then. Did they all move to Glasgow?
Gadget
-
There's a possible for Jane in 1881 but I'm not sure. The birthplace parish would fit with the 1861:
District 98 ED 18 Page 7
5 Nelson Street, Inverness
Jane McKenzie, hd, 47, sailor's wife, b. Lochbroom parish, Rossshire
Donald Stewart, boarder, 43, pensioner (navy), b. Invernes
There are some possibles for Alexandrina - in Glasgow as a domestic servant but a bit iffy :-\
Gadget
-
Hi Gadget
They must have move to Glasgow
Linda
-
:D
Oh no they didn't. The 1881 was correct for Jane. Here they are in 1871:
4 Nelson Street, Inverness District 98 ED 18 Page 28
Jane McKenzie, hd, 36, sailor's wife, b. Lochbroom
John Mckenzie, 15, sailor abs able seaman), b. Inverness
Alexina McKenzie, 10, scholar, b. Inverness
Catherine McKenzie, 8, scholar, b. Inverness
I presume John,snr, was at sea both 1871 and 1881. I'll have a look.

A possible for John, snr. in 1871
Vessels- Mechant Navy
District 455 Ship Huntingon, was in Liverpool on census night , Belonged to Leith
John McKenzie, 46, married, Master, b. Rossshire
plus 3 crew
-
A more likely one though because he was down as 'seaman, merchant navy' on the marriage cert and I'm sure she would have said ''Master' if he had been:
District 554 (Kilmory, Bute) Ship - Villager in Inverness, home port - North Shields
John McKenzie, 45, abs (able seaman), b. Rosshire
Gadget

Given the naming conventions, on the IGI, the only John McKenzie who fits was baptised Lochbroom, 9th October 1825. Father John McKenzie. I can't locate a baptism for Jane/Jean M(a)clean in Lochbroom between 1825 to 1837 or Assynt, Sutherland (the neighbouring parish)
Gadget
Added - it will be difficult to trace the families further than about 1790 - Lochbroom parish records only go that far back. Many of my neighbours have had to visit Edinburgh to examine the Sessions minute books

i have had no luck on the census details whatsoever gadget...
do not want to change the subject but i wonder if oor linda has this...

Hi Joe
Thanks for looking :)
I think Linda might have info on the Dimmack line (I checked her previous postings!) but it's very kind of you to provide all that info for her.
Getting back to the central problem. I think I might look for some deaths for John and Jane, post 1885. As you said earlier, trying to find McKenzies and McLeans - especially John and Jane/Jeans is a bit needles and haystacks up here - one down from McLeods ;D

did we ever find out who catherine married? and was her parents alive then?
i see that the parents were alive in 1885 so you think we could find catherine in 1881!!!
away for valium....lol
Joe

Joe ;D
You try finding the marriage of a Catherine McKenzie sometime after 1879 (when she would have been 16) then ::) ::) ::) It might be that she went off to Glasgow with Alexandrina. Try the 1881 :)
I'll stick to the deaths and a glass of something :)

been through it and throught it and throught it gadget,
best i can see is that catherine aged 21 inveness asylum
alexandrina domestic servant in glasgow,
still cannot find alexander dimmack on the 1891 census!!

Have you tried Kate, Katie, Catrine, Cathrine, Caterine and missplelings and M*ckenzie?
-
Grigor McKenzie died Inverness, 1866. The full death cert can be obtained from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
So it looks as if John, Alexandrina and Catherine were the only surviving children.

This is a very old post/thread but I’m new here and John Mackenzie and Jane/Jean McLean were my 2 x great grandparents.
John was born circa 1826 and died 10 June 1894
Jane was born circa 1831 and died 30 Jan 1894…..both are buried in Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness along with children Alexander 1858-60, Grigor 1866 and Catherine 1863-77.
As previously noted they had 5 children. I descend from their first born John, born 25 July 1855, died Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia 5 January 1916. He emigrated in 1876, he was a merchant seaman (as was his father) although he is listed as a lighthouse keeper/pilot at Sea Hill, Curtis Island for several years later in life. Married Alice Sinclair 1866-1911. They had 6 children, Donald, John, George, Archibald, Catherine and Jean. Alice’s parents were Donald Sinclair and Catherine Cairns.
I am trying to establish where John and Jane were born and who their parents were. Unfortunately their death certificates contain very little. No forenames and no mother’s maiden name on John’s…simply that his father was a ferryman and Jane’s notes her father was John McLean a farmer [crofter?]. The informant for both was listed as a friend (who owned the residence in which they lived) Donald Stewart.
I’m not convinced they were both born in the same area despite what’s listed on the 1861 census.
John (Jnr’s) eldest son, Donald Stewart McKenzie, believed his grandmother’s family were from Little Lochbroom, I’ve a letter he wrote seeking help to locate them in 1930 that says just this.
I’m also wondering if Knockan on the 1861 census might be Knockban?
If anyone who helped with the original query is still here I’d very much appreciate it, or any anyone with any fresh ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance, JazzaD :)

Are you using an Ancestry transcription of the 1861 census? Ancestry's transcriptions are notorious for errors.
Because the transcription at FindMyPast says Knockbain for both John's and Jane's birth parish. FindMyPast's transcriptions are generally more accurate than Ancestry's but they still make plenty of errors.
You need to view the original at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to check that you have the right information.
The 1861 census gives John's age as 37 and Jane's as 30, so if this is accurate John would have ebeen born in 1823/1824 and Jane in 1830/1831.
Have you got a copy of John Jr's birth certificate? Because if not, get it. 1855 birth certificates contain extra information about the parents that you never get in any other year.

Hi,
Yes I have the original 1861 census from SP. I ruled out Knocklaw (Ancestry’s transcription) but the writing is such it could be Knockan, Knockban or Knockbain. Early in this thread Gadget indicated Knockan.
I have the record for John’s (jnr) birth and it says both John and Jane were from the Parrish of Lochbroom so I dismissed the latter.
I’ve SP originals for each census, birth and marriage occurring in Scotland. Each subsequent census recorded their place of birth simply as Ross shire. I have a census for 1851 that I believe to be my gggf but I’ve not proven it yet. This census notes John, a seaman…right age, born Ullapool. DNA connections have family from in and around that area too. If this record is accurate for him, there are several other family members listed too.
Cheers, JazzaD
