Thanks for the info, but I am confused now if she was widowed/unmarried in in 1861 and a pauper with 3 children in 1851, she had two more children by 1861 still with the name Bailey can't get my head round it.

Sorry, thought the census indicated unmarried - good result overall too :)

Now I have to find Annie's father, here I go again ::)
-
I have found a George Bailey b. 1823 wife Martha b.1830 can anyone check if this is the parents of Annie Bailey who married Francis William Sainsbury 1876, any help would be appreciated.

The census evidence seems to point to Ann Bailey being illegitimate. When illegitimate people married, if they could get away with it, for proprieties sake they often fudged their father's name and made sure he certainly had the same surname as their unknown. The first name they gave him might be correct or if they weren't sure they made up a name, usually one from within their family circle. Likewise the occupation they gave their father.
Information on marriage certificates should always be checked against other sources because basically it can be very unreliable. There were no checks in the system and unless you were known to the vicar or the registrar you could say whatever seemed reasonable with no-one questioning whether it was correct.
The censuses seem to indicate (unless you have found another Ann Bailey born Fordingbridge of the same age) that Ann's mother was called Mary and was unmarried. Ann's birth certificate (or baptism) would prove this one way or the other.
Other than what Ann chose to say on her marriage about her father have you any other evidence that Ann Bailey's father was actually called George Bailey?
This in the baptism of what from the census information appears to be Ann Bailey's older sister.
Matilda Ann Bailey
Christening: 31 OCT 1841 Fordingbridge, Hampshire
Mother: Mary Bailey
and a possible for Ann's birth. The certificate itself would give further details.
Births Jun 1856
Bailey Ann Fordingbridge 2b 512
I think this is the George and Martha Bailey in Hampshire (but not Fordingbridge) you expressed an interest in
1861 census RG9 668 folio 97
Ringwood Hampshire
George Bailey 38 Head Married Farmer of 12 acres
Martha Bailey 32 Wife Married
Eliza Ann Bailey 4 Daughter
James Henry Bailey 2 Son
Charles Bailey 2 Months Son
all born Ringwood
By 1871 they had moved to Hordle where George was a farmer of 22 acres and had a further children three children all born Hordle.
Alice 6
George 5
William 1
On the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses in Fordingbridge Annie Sainsbury nee Bailey gave her birthplace consistently as Fordingbridge.

Hi Trapper,
I have Bailey ancestors from Fordingbridge and believe they are related to your Baileys. I would be interested in sharing notes.

Hi Trapper,
I am unable to reply with a PM at this stage, as I do not have enough posts on Rootschat.
My gr gr grandfather was James Bailey. In the census his place of birth is given as Fordingbridge and by his age in the census he would have been born about 1816. That fits fairly nicely with the James Bailey above baptised in 1815.
I also have a copy of a letter from an M Tiller (probably Matilda Tiller nee Bailey), which I believe is written to James Bailey's wife and daughter and which addresses them as Aunt and Cousin. This would appear to indicate that James and Mary Bailey were brother and sister.
I also have one of James Bailey's marriage certificates in which he indicates that his father is Henry Bailey (which may or may not give a clue to Mary's father, depending on whether the name was made up).
At the moment I am looking around for any pieces of the jigsaw that might help take me back a little bit further with this family. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
DerekMac

I am no farther forward really, Annie Bailey's husband was Francis Sainsbury b.1858 whose Father William b.1823 married a Mary Ann Wyatt (Formerley Tiller) b.1824.
So could there be a Henry Bailey who is Mary's & James' Father, and it looks as though Mary had a few children that were illegitimate.

Hi, I have some info. That may help on this. I have been investigating the Baileys in Fordingbridge, in particular James Bailey son of Henry Bailey. The various census for James indicates that he was born around 1826 but this is misleading as it implies his father and mother could be George and Ruth Bailey. I have investigated the parish records and have come to the conclusion that James Bailey was born in 1827/8. I can explain more if you need it.
