Title: Anybody with links to the PONTING and FIELDING in Wiltshire?
Post by: murphy0383 on Monday 23 July 07 23:28 BST (UK)
Hello, i was wondering whether anyone had any links to the Ponting family who lived in Swindon and Wanborough. I have gone back far as a Joseph Ponting who was born abt 1836 in Wanborough who had a son called Levi Ponting.

With the Fieldings i have gone back far as Thomas Fielding who was born abt 1774 in Potterne and i have found that majority of the Fieldings lived in Worton and Potterne near Devizes Wiltshire.

Any information or links would be great

Hi, this is what I found................

Baptisms in Wanborough
8 May 1836 Joseph son of John and Maria Pontin, labourer
4 Jun 1837 Mary dau of John and Maria Pontin
16 Jun 1839 Rebecca dau of John and Maria Pontin

I could not find a marriage for John and Maria after 1830, do you think they were married before or in a different parish?

Baptisms in Potterne
23 Nov 1774 Sarah dau of William and Jane Fielding
23 Mar 1777 Thomas son of William and Jane Fielding

Marriage in Potterne
13 Mar 1769 William Fielding and Jane Raymond both otp, witnesses Thos Watts and James Benly.

There was a possible baptism in Potterne 4 Jul 1742 William son of Thomas Fielden.   Did not find a baptism for Jane Raymond.

Cheers Dave

Thanks for finding that information out for me Dave, can i ask where you were able to find this information?
This is quite useful information

I dont know when John and Maria would have got married im afraid and wouldnt know if they got married in a different parish.

I seem to have come to a dead end with the Pontings and the Fieldings now

Information came from the ORIGINAL handwritten parish records so it is as accurate as you'll get.

Hi Murphy
I've just read your post about Pontings and I am interested because I know there was a Ponting family in the hamlet of Basset Down, near Wroughton, circa 1920/30. I have been trying to find more about them because one of the boys (Lionel) was well known to my parents and subsequently he was a POW of the Japanese and on the Burma railway. Do you have any knowledge of him?
Regards
Tantan

Hello
I, too, have connections to the Fielding family in Potterne. I have proven my line back to Israel Fielding (Fildown) who married Ann Miel in 1749 at Potterne.

I am researching for a friend and have two Israel Fieldings, one born in Potterne in 1759, and the other born in Bradford on Avon in 1794.  I am researching the line down from John, Israel and his wife Elizabeth's oldest son.

Any interest.

I am also researching the Fieldings of Potterne.

I can add that

William Fielding Born Potterne 4.7.1742   Parent Thomas Fielden
Married Jane Raymond Born 1745    Marriad at Pottern on 13.3.1769
Their Children were:
Sarah  Born 23.10.1774 potterne
Thomas   Born 23.3.1777 Potterne
Barbara   Born 14.1.1781 Potterne - Burried 25.2.1782 potterne
John Born 6.7.1783 Potterne
James Born 18.3.1787 potterne Burried 27.3.1787 potterne
James Born 25.12.1788 Potterne
Elizabeth 3.8.1791 Potterne  Burried 10.4.1792 potterne
Mary born 1773 Burried 25.9.1774 Potterne

Thomas Fielding (spelt fielden on records)  Born 21.10.1716 potterne
was the son of Stephen/ Steven  Fielden

I can only find a marriage for steven to Mary munday on the 27.11.1704 at potterne,  Their children are William b 13.4.1705 potterne, thomas, b 21.10.1716 potterne, mary b 15.9.1718 potterne, jane b 12.3.1720 potterne,  stephen b 17.10.1714 potterne.

This is where I am stuck..I can't get any further back.

I have done this research at Trowbridge Record Centre, before it relocated to Chippenham and can provide all reference no's if required.

Kind Regards

 J

I have an William fielding but he was born in 1847, he was the son of John (b1818) whose father was Israel (b1794) and he married a Hannah Self.  My interest is in Arthur John (b 1856) Williams Brother.

John, Williams father married a Caroline Maslen at Oxted in Surrey.  He was born in Bradford on Avon.  On the 1841 census he was in Wiltshire.  He married Caroline in 1842 in Surrey.  In 1845 when his daughter Elizabeth was born he was back in Wiltshire.  I can't find any connection with Surrey.  Has anybody any suggestions.

Israel(1794)'s father was Israel (b 1759 and married to Mary Spender) and his father appears to be Robert botn around 1727.

Does anybody recognise any of this

Regarding the 1769 marriage of William Fielding

I read this to be Jane Rayman and not Jane Raymond ?; and the witness is James Baily

Rayman might have been is misspelt on the PR and could be Redman

If Redman there is a ? Redman d/o John baptised 26 Jul 1748, sorry the forename is faint

There is no Jane Raymond or similar baptised during 1744-46, although there are some Jane Fielding's

John

I am descended from a Jacob Ponting from Wiltshire who had a brother Joseph. The name became Ponton in Australia.
