I am trying to find a marriage for my 3x great grandparents, William Caddy born 1789-1791 and Honor born 1785-1788. The marriage would have taken place circa 1815-1817 in St Breock Cornwall.
Honor's maiden name is transcribed as Growden (Grouden) on her daughter's death certificate (informant is her daughter in law, so may be incorrect).
One of their children and grandchildren (a female) have been given the middle name 'Oliver' which may be significant.
I can't find a marriage for William and Honor on IGI. I have found them in the censuses.
Daisy May has found the births/baptisms of William and Honor Caddys' children in St Breock between 1817-1832.

Hi Margaret,
William CADDY = Honour OLIVER 25 May 1817 St Breock
Cheers Kris :D
-
Thankyou Kris :D, that was quick, I'm impressed 8)
It certainly looks like William and Honors' marriage record. I'm so pleased that the family left a clue in the naming pattern, but I do wonder though, why my 2x great grandmother's daughter in law gave Honor's maiden name as Growden/Grouden on her death certificate?
Thanks again Kris,
Margaret :)

Here is Honour's baptism also
Honour OLIVER was baptised 29 June 1788 St Breock - Parents John and Honour.
This marriage is not listed in St Breock
Honour OLIVER was buried St Breock 13 May 1829 aged 75 years
John is not listed 1813-1837
Cheers Kris :D
Yes Margaret the name certainly has nothing in common with the name Oliver that is for sure :-\
-
Thankyou once again Kris for your time spent looking up these records, I do appreciate it :D
How wonderful to now have the names of Honour's parents and her mother's burial record.
I was wondering whether Honour Oliver's mother's maiden name could be Growden? which would justify the error on the death certificate.
Kind regards,
Margaret :)

Just an update, the mystery has been solved:
Honor Oliver was my 2x great grandmother's mother and Grace Growden her father's mother.
Grace Growden married Richard Caddy 24 July 1781 at St. Breock.
Now all I have to do is find the correct birth/baptism for Grace c1750-1760 in Withiel/St Breock and hopefully link her to the correct family.
Margaret :)

Aha That is great news Margaret. ;D
Marriage States Richard CADDY of Withiel = Grace GROWDEN 24 July 1781 St Breock so presume St Breock was her parish at the time of marriage.
I don't see a baptism but I notice there is a
John BEST = Honour GROWDEN 19 Nov 1787 St Breock
no mention of either being from outside the parish but I do find
Honour GROWDEN baptised 30 Aug 1767 Withiel Parents Joseph and Grace
Siblings all Withiel (IGI)
William 15 May 1755
Jenefer 9 Jan 1763
Joseph 29 Aug 1773
No mention of Grace but looks likely parentage
Joseph GROWDEN of St Breock = Grace JEFFERY 3 Feb 1751 Withiel ;)
Cheers Kris :D

Aha,
Checked the batch number and found her
Grace GRONDEN 10 June 1759 Withiel - Parents Joseph and Grace ;D
Cheers Kris :D

Kris, this is wonderful news, :D
Now, this presents another mystery in that I have received information from another source that there is another Grace Growden born c 1751, parents: Elisabeth Unknown and Laurence Growden (brother to Joseph Growden who married Grace Jeffery). Laurence and Joseph's parents were Laurence Grouden and Elizabeth Vanson. (see below).
Children of LAURENCE GROUDEN and ELIZABETH VANSON are:
1. LAURENCE GROUDEN, b. 1721, Christening: 22 May 1721, Withiel. He married Elisabeth ? in c1751-1752
2. MATHEW GROWDEN, b. 1723, St Breock.
3. ELIZABETH GROWDEN, b. 1730, St Breock.
Christening: 15 Apr 1730, Withiel(of St Breock)
4. JOSEPH GROWDEN, Christening: 30 Mar 1727, Withiel (of St Breock) He married Grace Jeffery
Generation No. 2
Children of LAURENCE GROUDEN and ELISABETH ? are:
1. GRACE GROWDEN, b. 1751.
2. HONOR GROWDEN, b. 1753, St Breock.
Christening: 18 Sep 1753, St Breock
3. JINIFER GROWDEN, b. 1753, St Breock.
Christening: 18 Sep 1753, St Breock
4. PRUDENCE GROWDEN, b. 1760, Withiel.
Christening: 10 Aug 1760, Withiel
I found a Grace Caddy age 90, living with Mary Caddy age 55 (? her daughter) in Egloshayle Cornwall, (1841 census),which would indicate that Grace was born c1751, Richard Caddy and Grace Growden had a daughter, Mary baptized 17 Oct 1784 Withiel St Breock Cornwall England, so I am fairly certain that this is my Grace, but I wouldn't rely on census information especially in 1841, to be correct regarding date of birth.
There is only one death that I can find for Grace Caddy around this time (enumerated as CADY on the GRO records) who died in the March quarter of 1843. I have ordered this death certificate - which at least will hopefully give me her correct age.
Thanyou again Kris
Regards,
Margaret :)

Hope the death cert helps but again only as good as the person giving the information. I don't see this marriage of Laurence 2 to Elizabeth.
No shortage of Laurence's marrying in Withiel either
Lawrence GROUDEN = Blanch ROBINS 24 Oct 1681
Lawrence GROUDEN = Mary PENNY 1 May 1714
and the one you mention
Laurence GROUDEN = Elizabeth VANSON 21 Jan 1719
the 4 baptisms you mention in Withiel all listed as GRONDEN
Just to confuse I do see
Laurence GROWDEN = Jone THOMAS 3 Jan 1747 Crowan
There is a Jone THOMAS baptised 14 Mar 1724 Father Wm Crowan
Wm THOMAS = Elianor his wife 21 May 1718 Crowan
Baptisms at Crowan Parents Lawrance and Jone GROWDAN
Jane 28 Aug 1748
Elizabeth 28 Aug 1748
Baptisms at Withiel parents Laurence and Joanna GRONDEN
Laurence 9 Dec 1750
William 25 Dec 1752
Joanna 25 May 1755
Mathew 17 Jun 1759
Also see Baptism Lanivet Parents Laurence and Joanna GROUDEN
George 21 Jul 1765
Hasn't helped at all with this Laurence and Elizabeth Unknown. Sorry I am not having any luck with a second Grace I am afraid. I see the other 3 baptisms you mention with parents Laurence and Elizabeth but not a Grace
Cheers Kris :D
-
Thankyou Kris for all this information :D,
I'm sure the Grouden/Growden/Gronden baptisms and marriages are related in some way, so will file them away for future reference.
Taking everything into consideration, I am leaning toward Grace who was baptised in 1759, with parents, Joseph Growden and Grace Jeffery, being my 4x great grandparents.
I really appreciate the time you have spent on this,
Kind regards
Margaret :)

I am interested in making contact, as we are trying to tie together all the GROWDEN/GROWDON/GROUDEN families of Cornwall, most of whom seem to be related.
-
Hi Margaret.
I came across this thread while searching for Growden/Grouden.
I think I have successfully traced back as far as William Growden who married Elizabeth Couch Saundercock/Sandercock at Cardinham in 1792. I believe this is the William Growden who died 1832 at “Higher Bore Street” Bodmin, aged 81.
That would make his birth about 1751.
There are 2 baptisms listed on OPC for William Growden, both at Withiel:
25 Dec 1752 - parents Lawrence and Joanna
15 May 1755 - parents Joseph and Grace
I need to do some more digging to see if any sibling names or maternal surnames pop up in later generations to distinguish which is right.
