What an absolutely wonderful photo, Bob  :)  It is so clear and there are not many marks so it will clean up well  :)

You'll probably get some coloured ones as well!

Regards

Hi Jim

The cap and badge are the same as what was identified on an earlier post as The Gordon Highlanders.

Hi gisela

Would say around that date could be a possibility.Rita's mother was born 1873 so looking at her age it would put it around that time.

PS.

I made no adjustments to brightness/contrasts/levels on the first one. Here's another that is slightly more contrasty.

It's really a lovely photograph ... I love the 2nd one Gadget with a bit extra contrast ... I like it restored  that way personally . Did you want it coloured Trublue ?  Does anyone know if these scenic backdrops were ever painted in colour when  the resulting photograph was always going to be in  monotone ?  The reason I ask ( I dont ever remember learning about that doing photograpghy ! ) is because we all seem to enjoy colouring them yet they may not have been coloured  :o ;D

Hi Bob and Gadget,
Changed my mind!!!!!
Will take you up on your kind offer Gadget, and apply my Sepia toning to your brilliant restoration (Maybe bending the rules a bit, as it is not a true colouring!  But I am sure you will approve!)

Hi Bob

Here is my effort

Poll, I usually do my backdrops plain, I feel it enhances the subjects better, shows them off more.  But I have coloured the last two Bob posted, I don't really know why, they just seemed to ask for it more than the others.  I assume they would be coloured, I don't know why, just because the people themselves dressed in colour, even though they knew the photo's would be sepia  :-\  Not a very good reason really, just my thoughts.....

If you want a plain backgroung Bob, just say the word and I can alter them.  I still have no idea of tartan, so played safe

Cheers

Lones

Hi all

More lovely restores while I slept :)

Regarding the backdrop. I'm not sure about this but I have the feeling/hunch - call it what you will - that photographers' studios had a few 'suitable' hangings that the sitters could be posed in front of with complementary furnishings  :)  The hangings would have been a bit like theatre sets: maybe on canvas or board and painted in oils or tempera with varnishing. Over time, the hangings would get that brown/yellow glazing that comes with age or tobacco smoke.

This is just my feeling about it - maybe right, maybe wrong  :-\

Oh well, back to list making  :(

if you google photographic backgrounds, you will find they STILL sell them :o though I expect today's ones would be in colour. I assume they are for studios that specialise in period style portraits.

I was trawling a while ago to see if there was anything out there that I could use and abuse as alternative backgrounds awhile ago and came across several sites selling them.

Love the coloured backgrounds, especially when there coloured as nice as you folks do them.

Thanks again

Lovely colours Lones ... yes thats a good point that people would wear colours naturally, and that makes sense that the backdrops were probably painted by the same people who did theatre sets at the time... so they most likely were in colour..In fact it would be more difficult to paint in so many shades of grey to get the same effect I think .. Thanks Jc I didnt find much info when I googled so I will have another look ...Gadget ...I think  your hunch is probably right ... interesting though... it was just a thought  as so many of the backgrounds look like mini works of art in themseves ! :D

Hi Poll

You and I  could have been employed as background painters in 'them olden days'  :)  I remember doing sets for plays when in school  :D

Interesting that the landscapes seem very Claude Lorraine-ish, romantic/idyllic settings and the interiors are all very 'posh' drawing rooms/salons  8)

I suppose Having a studio photograph taken was a bit akin to having  the latest model of a car on ones drive  and designer labels on ones clothes !! ;D ;D
Perceived as a bit of a status symbol!lol ...Fings 'aven't changed much 'ave they Guv !! ;D

Very much like Claude Lorraine Gadget ... Classical architecture and ideal landscapes
