Hi All,
I have been trying to find an elusive marriage certificate for a couple in the England/Wales marriage index between the years 1945-1984, & without any success at all?
Because I do not know the brides maiden surname, I have listed all possible entries under the grooms full name, & then had to check the brides surname entry to see if I can find a matching brides first name.
This has proved even more difficult because this marriage could have literally taken place anywhere, & I believe it is also possible that it may have even taken place in Scotland.
Please can someone tell me if the Scottish marriage index is in the same format, or does it include both partners name & surname in full?
If anyone can help, then many thanks.

Hi Phil32,
It's different up here in Scotland. There isn't an index to check against.
For records in the timespan you are interested in (and the limited information) the only available method of searching is to go to Edinburgh and visit the General Register Office of Scotland. You pay to enter the building then have free access to all the actual certificates.
Older certificates are available online for £1.25 through Scotlandspeople.
Sorry.

Hi Pam,
Thank you for the reply.
Unfortunately I am in the south of the UK, so a visit to Edinburgh to search these records is likely to be very costly. & not possible at the moment.
I also wondered if you could answer another question? Do you know if there is anywhere in Scotland where they hold this information on computer?
It is soooo annoying because a few years back it was possible to go to the London FRC & use a Scotlink computer system that made many of the Scottish GRO records available.
Thanks again.

Phil,
a few years back it was possible to go to the London FRC & use a Scotlink computer system
Are you not able to do that anymore? Have you asked them at FRC if this is still possible? Sorry to say that I have not used the system or been there, but I wasn't aware that it had ceased. Do let us know if this is now defunct.

Hi Little Nell,
I did actually ask the staff at the FRC about the Scotlink system, & they said it had been removed a couple of years ago!
I guess that the only option now is to pay for searches to be made by the Scottish GRO, or family history researchers situated in the area.
Phil.
