Hi Folks
Thanks to a posting by Cheshiremog I have seen a wonderful site showing directories, which has helped me find the name of the public house kept by my ancestors.
Can anyone tell me if it still exists? It is the Unicorn Inn at Hale Barns.
Thanks! And to Cheshiremog!
-
In recent times the Unicorn has been renamed "Corbin's". If you look at the Manchester Metro News at www.metronews.co.uk/news/article/3/3983 there is an article published June 1 2007 covering the new opening after it was aquired by Beverley Callard.
-
Thanks Ken - that's great! Thanks for your trouble :D
-
If you go to the link below you will find an earlier photo of the Unicorn and a bit of its history. The link is too big to copy in so it is in two parts. It overlaps :)
http://www.trafford.gov.uk/content/tca/display_image.asp?ImageID=5329
Link modified it should work ok now
There is also a book entitlrd Hale and Ashley - the Past Hundred Years published by the Hale Civic Society in 1987. There are a number of photos of the Unicorn in it including an article.
Does the name Barlow mean anything to you? :)
Regards
Reiver
-
And there is more, OT :)
I've just checked your surname interests and see Moore in Hale Barns.
Not Barlow :)
I quote from the article:-
'Some of the Moores will turn over in their graves. The family bible shows that they kept this place for hundreds of years and nearly all the time had their own brewery'
The above extract is part of an article taken from the Manchester Evening Chronicle of 10th January 1934.
Are you far from Hale Barns?
Regards
Reiver
-
Dear Reiver,
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the article won't open at the moment. It says "page not found." I will keep trying though.
Yes, the Moores were my ancestors. Wonder where that family Bible is????? I knew my ancestor was an Innkeeper in Hale Barns from his will, but didn't realise that he was from a long line of them! It was only when I saw a post from Cheshiremog about a site showing old directories that I saw they were at the Unicorn. I haven't done much research on the family, as I live in Staffordshire. This has inspired me to make the effort and visit Cheshire Record Office!!
Thanks again
Best wishes, Oldtimer

Hi Reiver
Have tracked down the "Hale and Ashley - the Past Hundred Years" on an Altrincham History site but it seems to be out of stock or out of print! :'( :'( :'(
-
Hi Old Timer
Something you wrote made me think I'd misled you.
The article I referred to was in the book of photographs of Hale and Hale Barns.
The link was to a photograph on the www.traford.gov.uk web site. You could try going in on this link
www.trafford.gov.uk
anf finding your way throough various pages to do with Culture and Libraries etc. to something that says Trafford Lifetimes. Another option would be to Google on Trafford Lifetimes
Contact with Manchester Central Library may enabe you to get the full article on the Unicorn.
You have the issue date. When I read the extract in the book it appeared to me that the name Moore had appeared earlier in the newspaper article - and might say who had the Bible :) :)

Reiver

Thanks Reiver and Peter! I will certainly try and find out "more" about my "Moores"!
Cheers!!!!!

Sorry, I've been away & only just seen this thread. I can't get the link in ken.h's first response to load, but found this also in the Metro News with a photo:
http://www.metronews.co.uk/news/article/3/3983_corries_bev_swaps_the_rovers_for_hale_barns.html
The current name is The Gallery which gets a bit lost in the article.
(As someone who passes fairly often I did at first think it had been converted to an art place! ;D)
-
Hi!! Thanks for the link! :) :)
As you live nearby, I wondered if you would be able to answer a question for me. Most of the ancestors I have found from Halebarns were baptized, married or buried at Bowdon. But I have seen entries on the IGI for people who I think are related to them, but they are at Ringway church. I can't find any information about this church on Google. Is the church still there? Would it be feasible for people living in Hale Barns to use this church as well? :-\
Cheers!! Judy

Oldtimer
if you google for "Ringway Chapel" as opposed to "Ringway Church" you should find what you are looking for.

Thanks very much!! :D :D

Hi oldtimer & Reiver,
I recently saw something about a "clean-up" of the graveyard at Ringway - I think by the people from All Saints (the present parish church for Hale Barns & Ringway). Do you happen to know the location of the graveyard - presumably where the old chapel was? I couldn't find a location by searching & was just curious.
http://www.allsaintshalebarns.org/index.html
is the website for the present church - almost directly opposite the (former) Unicorn
Thanks
-
Hi there :)
Thanks for the link. Sorry I don't know the area at all, so have no idea where the graveyard is. Let's hope Reiver does! ;)
Wonder how old the gravestones are? Hope that they are not removing them!!! :'(

Hi Judy
I lived in Hale Barns from age 12-18 and we used to walk to Ringway Airport (which has now greatly enlarged into Manchester Airport), so it would have been feasible for people living in Hale Barns to go to a church in Ringway.
The Unicorn rings a bell, but I thought it was just round a corner of a road rather than right in the village as per the photo on the link given by Peter Bennett but maybe that was another pub. I know there was a bus stop outside the pub I am thinking of and as I lived 15 minutes walk away, I used to ride my bike to the bus stop and just leave it leaning against the pub fence. Then I would go to work and return some 10 hours later and the bike was always just where I'd left it. Couldn't do that nowadays.
I never went into any pubs though, we didn't when I was young.

mshrmh
I don't know where the graveyard at Ringway is or was. There was one attached to the Unitarian Church in Chapel Lane, Hale Barns. I used to have to go past it on my walk home from the bus stop. I remember my friends who lived in the village asking me if I was scared walking home alone, when I asked why, they said there might be a ghost in the churchyard! Nowadays, they'd be saying I might get mugged or worse.
Liz
-
Hi Liz!
I sent you the wrong link! If you look back through all the messages on this page you will find one about a Corrie actress buying the pub, and it shows a pic of the present day pub! :-[ Now you know why I am called oldtimer!!!!
-
Oldtimer
That one looks a bit like I remember, except it didn't have what I presume are hanging baskets or something, i.e. it was an unadorned building and there wasn't that wall in front of it, just a large open space, not paved, but sort of very fine shale or something and then a wooden fence, (where I parked my bike) and then the footpath. The footpath on the photo looks as if it is just outside the pub now. I don't understand that unless they've widened the road. Maybe next time we go North, we'll take a drive round and look at all the old places.
My cousin lives in Lymm and she says Hale hasn't changed much, but that we wouldn't recognise Altrincham at all and by the sound of it, Hale Barns has changed from a smallish village to a place with wine bars and Manchester United footballers etc.
Liz
-
Hi Liz
Yes. I suppose it is called progress!! :-\ Not always for the better, I think!
Glad it brought back some good memories for you! I hope to visit there soon and take a look for myself.
Thanks again! Best wishes, Judy

Good evening all.
Ringway Chapel
This is/was the Chapel of Ease for Bowdon which oldtimer asked about. For those who are reasonably familiar with the area it is next to the Romper pub near to the M56 Motorway roundabout at Hale Barns - about half a mile from the Unicorn on the way to Wilmslow.
Using a Pathfinder Map (Stockport South 741) Grid Ref is SJ 80908470. The church is marked.
If you want to see its position pre-Manchester Airport try www.old-maps.co.uk and enter the reference 381000 384700. It is marked as All Saints Church. Of course, the modern All Saints Church is almost opposite the Unicorn - back where we started.
Liz, I think the pub 'round the corner' is the Bulls Head
Regards
Reiver
-
Reiver
Of course it's the Bull's Head. Now why couldn't I remember that!! So where is the Unicorn? I know there was one somewhere around but I think that was called the Unicorn Hotel.
When I lived in Hale Barns, there was no Motorway, so we had to go the long way round to Wilmslow.
Liz
ps. Sorry Oldtimer for gatecrashing your post.
-
Hi Reiver - thanks for that answer - I do know where the Romper is, so next time I pass near I'll look out for the chapel. Glad to know as I couldn't work it out before.
Thanks.
-
Thanks Reiver for the information and map link. Thanks for taking the time and trouble! :D
Thanks Liz too for your help! :D

Hi Oldtimer
I am hoping to ffind a bit more on the Moores - but it may be a while.
Hi Liz
Coming from the Altrincham direction along Hale Road
Pass Shay Lane on the left
Pass the junction with the Roman Catholic Church (St Ambrose) on the corner on the right
Pass the Cof E church (All Saints) on the right.
Pass shope on the left.
At end of shops The Unicorn

Reiver

Thanks Reiver!!!! :D :D :D

OT, Have you tried the Inter Library Loan system, for Hale and Ashley - The Past 100 Years.
HTH,
Megran.

Hi Megran!! :)
Good idea! I hadn't thought of that. Certainly worth a try! Thanks, Judy

The church that you're referring to in Bowdon is probably St Mary's. I live about 20 yards away from it, so if I can be of any help, please let me know.

Sorry, I should have added this:
http://www.bowdon-parish-church.org.uk/
The church is one of the largest in the area. The family vault of the Earls of Stamford is within. It is perfectly feasable that people who lived in Hale or Hale Barns should wish to be buried at St Mary's.

Hi Richard! Nice to hear from you! Welcome to Rootschat! I have only been a member for a few weeks but I love it already! But beware - it is addictive!!
Thanks so much for your message about Bowdon. You are very lucky to live near the church. I visited it several years ago now, and thought what a lovely place it was. And a fabulous graveyard too!! Do you have "roots" there?
My family, the Moores, actually lived in Hale Barns, as you have probably gathered through reading this link! Although I have never seen the original registers, I bought transcriptions on fiche from the Cheshire FHS, and have used that to find my Moores. I was also able to buy a couple of their wills, which told me that my great great great grandfather was an Innkeeper, but didn't mention which inn. It was only when I joined Rootsweb that I found out it was the Unicorn.
There were later generations of Moores living in Hale according to the censuses, but I couldn't find them being baptized in Bowdon. That is when I used the IGI and found people who could be them baptized at Ringway. Which I way I asked the question - is Ringway in Hale Barns? When I was told yes, it really helped me to broaden my tree. If I hadn't joined Rootsweb, I would have still been at square one! The people who use this site are so friendly and helpful, as I am sure you will find out!
When I visited Bowdon I was unable to go into the church, as it was closed! If ever you have chance to go in and take a photo, I would be most grateful!!!
Thanks again! Best wishes, Judy
-
Hi Judy/Oldtimer - I hope Richard/Turenne can help - in the meantime there's a couple of good exterior shots on the church's own website at
http://www.bowdon-parish-church.org.uk/
and on Cheshire Churches
http://www.moston.org/churches.html
The only time I've been in the church myself was for a wedding - my memory is of the chill (winter-time) rather than the appearance of the place!
-
Thanks Mshrmh (quite difficult to pronounce, I think!!) :D
Thanks for the links. It is certainly a beautiful church. Now that I have got so much more info on my Moores, I really hope to visit it next year, and see more of Hale Barns too.
Sorry to hear of your chilly experience! Hope it wasn't your own wedding ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hello Judy,
No, I haven't got 'roots' here. My father was Polish, (he came here and joined the RAF during the war) and my mother's family Chatterly/Trevis are/were based in Worcestershire and Co Durham. I, however have lived in Cheshire for most of my life.
Yes, the chaps/chapesses on Rootschat seem a pleasant bunch, I'm learning a lot, simply by reading others' messages.
When I discover how to post a photo onto the message board I'll take a picture of the interior of St Mary's. ???
Richard
-
Hi Richard!!
posting a photo - easy-peasy!! see
RootsChat Topics: Scanning and Posting Images
You have an interesting family history. Is it difficult to research Polish families? Or are you just concentrating on the English ones at the moment?
Good luck in all your searches
Judy :D :D
-
Cheers Judy, I'll give it a go....now where's my camera...?
Richard
-
Oh Richard!! I didn't post that link just so that you would send me a photo!!!! ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
Have you seen the photo restoration board? If you have any old photos that you would like dated or restored, or even coloured, post it to them, and I can guarantee you will get some fabulous results!!! :D :D :D
Judy

Hi oldtimer/Judy - not my own wedding thankfully (that was elsewhere on a sunny day) - I was a guest so could wrap up. It was a long time ago, so maybe there's a better heating system now (hope so for their congregation's sake).
I agree my user name is unpronouncable - sorry - at the time I first joined I wasn't inspired - did think about changing it when I started using the site more regularly, but found it would be complicated & stuck with it by default.
For Richard/turenne - I'll second the recommendation of the photo restoration board - they really are good, so if you've any faded/creased/discoloured etc photos do give it a go.

Reiver
Many thanks for reminding me where the Unicorn is. I used to deliver papers from the newsagents in the row of shops.
Coincidentally, after leaving Hale Barns, we went to live in Bowdon in East Downs Road, which is fairly near to the Church.
Liz
ps. I thought I had logged off on Friday and decided to have computer free weekends in future, which is why I have only just seen your postig. When I returned to Roots it seemed I had been permanently logged on. I don't know how, but sometimes when I click on a link sent to me via e-mail it opens a 2nd page and I have to log off both of them.

Hello Judy
You may wish to try the following:-
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/ENG-CHS-ST-MARYS-BOWDON.html
It is a Rootsweb board for Bowdon Parish. You could initially go to the Archive via the link and Search for Moore. I got 13 hits. The Bowdon Archivist was on the list but as I no longer subscribe I don't know whether that is still the case. It may be useful anyway.
As I've already said I'm hoping for more on Moore :)
Regards
Reiver
-
Liz,
I'm directly opposite East Downs Rd on Richmond Rd.
Richard
-
Thanks Reiver
I had a quick look on the list but could find none of my Moores from Hale Barns :(
However, I will subscribe to it and see if there is any more information available!
Thanks a lot for your trouble. Judy
-
Hi Mshrmh
I had the same problem with my user name - I must have tried twenty different names but all I chose were already in use! So as a last resort I tried "Oldtimer" and it was accepted! So Oldtimer I became!!
Judy

I'm directly opposite East Downs Rd on Richmond Rd.
Richard
Hello Richard and welcome to Rootschat. I lived in East Downs Road in 1960-62, so many moons ago, although all my children except the last one were born in Southfields Maternity Home which was on Langham Road (and I think the corner of Richmond Road) and is now flats as far as I know. We could get from our back garden through some open land to the back entrance of Southfields. My young brother often used to go in to post letters etc. for the patients.
Liz
-
Hello Liz,
Richard Madeley (Richard and Judy) was born at Southfields as well. The flats are very smart now and the penthouse recently sold for an astronomical sum. East Downs Rd is now one of the smartest in the Hale/Bowdon/Hale Barns area, though sadly the open land has disappeared.
Cheers
Richard
-
East Downs Rd is now one of the smartest in the Hale/Bowdon/Hale Barns area,
Wow, pity my parents didn't stay there instead of making financial mistakes such as selling up and buying a sub post office in Cheshire, that when they sold they didn't have enough money to buy another house. My mum thought, until the day she died, that their solicitor and accountant were crooks who took all the money, but they were my dad's so called friends and he wouldn't hear a word said against them.
Oh well, c'est la vie as they say in France.
Liz
-
The cheapest house is £600,000 up to the £1.7 million mark for the most expensive. A shame your dad didn't listen to your mum.
It has to be said however, that there are plenty of people around here who made similar mistakes. Who was to know in the 60's, that Victorian and Edwardian properties, then somewhat unfashionable, would be worth so much in later years?
Richard
-
A shame your dad didn't listen to your mum.
He was a Northerner and brought up to believe that men were more important than women and that what they said was always right. He had 3 sisters and 2 brothers and the girls were brought up to wait on the boys!!! Imagine what today's girls would say if they were told to wait on their brothers.

This is a very old thread but I found it today as I searched for Hale Barns. I believe the Moores were being researched.
I have a John Moore who married Mary Perrin in 1788. John inherited some property from his father in law in a will of 1802.
This family are my cousins 6X removed.
-
Just to add to my last post, the Unicorn shows clearly on the Cheshire Tithe Maps and John & Mary Moore are owner/occupiers. I believe John Moore used to be a Blacksmith.

Hi UsaCheshire
Thanks for your comments.
I have pm'ed you.

HI!
By chance I bought an old photo album at a flea market the other week. In it is a good photo of the "Old Unicorn Inn, Hale Barns taken just before it was pulled down and rebuilt" (This photograph taken for inclusion in a brochure published by Cox Brothers). There is a man stood in front of the building who might be the landlord.
Date around 1924 going by other photos dated in the album.
Is this of any interest?
Keith-clan

Hi Keith,
It is a bit late for my ancestors living there, but I would certainly like a copy if you would be so kind.
I will pm you my email address.
Thank you very much
Judy :D
