Hi Folks, Ive searched to see if this has been posted. Can't find anything...
Is this find of WW1 people only to be found on Ancestry?

Are these the same records that have been available on Ancestry for a couple of months, or new ones? It doesn't give much away does it?
It would be lovely if they have just been found in the last week or so. I've been waiting for the next batch 'DEF' to come available.

Hi again,
No Joy, using your 2nd address it lets me go all the way till I reach "new source to find family..." as soon as I click this, Windows Internet Explorer denies me access stating that this page is FORBIDDEN ?
First time this has ever happened, shall have to check this up.
Regards Reg.

Reg. I don't know about these things. Would 'they' in technical know anything?
Rosemary. I hope its not on Ancestry as they have my email wrong and I cant access the site.
Could you look up William Coxhead b1899 Cookham/Maidenhead died 21 Sept 1918. Just before his 18th birthday.
My aunt saw this on telly last night.'Bill' is on CWGC site with no next of kin. She has sent lots of info but no obit which they insist she should have. Hoping this new info will give something else as proof for him.

Hi Reg and Lesanne
The site Lesanne posted is a BBC site. I know that my sis who lives abroad sometimes has difficulty accessing BBC items - I think they pick the best bits and put them on a "worldwide" site, but I could be wrong about that.
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi Lesanne
I looked up William Coxhead on Ancestry (Military records). It just kept bringing up Patrick Cassidy alias Boylen for some reason. He was born in Dundee in 1879, so nothing matches. Oh well, sorry about that. Hopefully this new batch has nothing to do with Ancestry.

I was able to access the info without any trouble. If I read it right they have found a bunch of fairly detailed records that will be available on a commercial website, ie Ancestry I think, in the next year or so.
Soon, there will be a new source of information for all those whose relatives fought for the British Army during the First World War.
"One card I remember was absolutely full of information, including an address in Rhodesia. They now have another section of family to trace."
Bruce Simpson, Western Front AssociationIn a secret location in Wiltshire, enthusiasts from the Western Front Association have saved the records of five and a half million people.
The records, hand-written on cards, reveal the medals they received, how they progressed through the ranks and whether they survived or were killed in action.
They're now being scanned and will be available via a commercial website.
In less than a year, anyone who's interested will have access to them.
Here's a link to the website. Please note that it's not a BBC website and there may be a charge for accessing some of the information.

Hi
The only match I can find is:--
William Frederick Coxhead b:1899 :Maidenhead.
He is in the 1901 census with father William,Mother Kate, and William F age 1 .
A quick look at Military records deaths in 1918 gives nothing.
If you think William Frederick could be your missing William let me know and I shall follow it up.

Hi Reg, This is the link to CWGC. :D

So are these records different to the medal cards already available on the national archives website? I hope they are different as this would be a really good resource.
and like Subaru, I am also waiting for ancestry to put the latest batch of WWI pension records up, I have one relative with a C surname, so hopefully in the next batch, the others are S and T so may have to wait a while!

Hi
I met someone in our Library ( from Peterborough) in the week who assured me that
all the index from A-Z will be on line by the end of the month.
Can't wait either.

Hi Lesanne.
CWGC works at this end, as I thought (no age or dob) so many young boys joined the armed services giving a false DOB.
and of cause the services'es would enter dob as unknown (under WW1 wartime circumstances) in the event of death. At least this is what my G-father told me.
As we don't know the date he joined I shall take a broader look for his DOB.

I may have this wrong but these records are surely the original medal index cards? The National Archives copied them and then they were disposed of. Their value is supposed to be that very occasionally there is some info on the reverse that was not copied by National Archives. If I am correct these are the cards referred to on the National Archives website on the MIC page.
-
The records you are on about are the Medal Index Cards, the National Archives give them to the Westen Front Association about 2/3 years ago.
-
The info on the news section of the WFA resolves Lesannes initial posting and confirms what Mack says.

(3rd item down)
I seem to recall reding that you could have a photo of a card for a donation to the WFA but I can't readily find anything to that effect now.

Watching that clip it just looks like the medal cards already available at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
Maybe ancestry have bought them off the national archives and will put the cards on their site, like they did with freeBMD.

Found a bit more on their site now.
See the comment fron 'VAN' dated 13th July and the informative replies given by the Associtation
http://www.westernfrontassociation.com/guestbook/
The main difference between the WFA offer and the NA download is that you get a coloured photo of front and back of 'your' card not a grainy image of a batch of six plus of course there may be additional info on the rear.

From WFR - I think I have read that it will be 5.00 for a copy of the MIC (front and back - there may be info. there apparently).
NA only display front online, but both if you visit Kew.
-
The NA do-not show both sides of the Medal index card. Its only the WFA that can do that now. You have to pay them £5.00 for both sides, However they do-not tell you if there is info on the back of the card, So you could pay the £5.00 and may only get the front of the card with info on it, & the back of the card with nought.
-
Thanks Themonstar. I had not realised that.
Great advice.
Susan.

these are the MICs,after they were put on line, the N/A decided that they had no room to store them so the western front assoc have taken custody of them, mack
