Title: I Need help?????
Post by: BABAJACK on Friday 13 July 07 17:48 BST (UK)
I have been doing my family history for a while now but have come to a halt... I am trying to find any info on WILLIAM ARCHER he was born in 1812 and lived in Salop?? i do not know if he was born there, i know he lived there as it says so on his convict records, he was transported to tasmania at the age of fifteen.
Really desperate to find out if he was born in Salop or else where also if possible try and find his parents, anybody who thinks they might be able to help in any way please get in touch... thankyou so much. :)

  Hi Babajack....Welcome to Rootschat :)

The IGI has 5 William Archers baptised in Salop/Shropshire between 1807 & 1812.

One is William Archer bap 5 July 1812 Bromfield Shropshire
                                                            Father John
                                                            Mother Eleanor.

This William has a sibling Thomas Bapt 1809.

If he goes on to marry does his marriage cert give anything away?

                        Tazzie

Hi Tati....shame about that one ...would have been too easy  :)

Quite  a few William Archers from Devon to Northamptonshire show up as transported.
Babajack do you know the trail date or the boat he arrived on?

Hi see what you mean about the scan.

Looks like "Transported for House (breaking?)

and I am sure I can pick out the word Stafford.
There is a William Archer bap 1811 and another 1813 in Staffs. But I may be way off the mark with what I can read into it.
I would ask if someone can look up the records in Launceston cause if we can get a name it will be so much easier. Post a request on the Aus board. Someone may be able to take a look for us.

I will wait to see what happens. The Bussorah later took fee paying Brits out to Australia and on a run prior to 1830 (in1828) arrived carrying smallpox. Cannot find that link again ??? Must be doing something wrong.

Babajack, where was William tried for his crimes?  If you can work that out from his paperwork (it will most likely be an Assizes or a Quarter Sessions) then you may get some more info about him from the trial records - if you are VERY lucky it will give you something about his birthplace, home or parentage, but that's not been my experience unfortunately  :(

P.S.  Have put a link from your other thread back to this thread, to avoid duplication of responses etc.  Here's a link back to your other thread:

Can you scan the top right and bottom right bits only, so we can read the rest of the text that's there?

   Hi Babajack.....

Yep look to me as though it reads....

Transported for HOUSE BREAKING.  Good report--- ----- ------
Health Report -------- with the cane for destroying his case?

The bit here is faint...but further along is the name Archer and is it Beckwith Stafford? I cannot see a place called Beckwith in Staffs.

Prue is better at reading text so I will wait and see how she reads it...me I am probably over due at the opticians ;D

Catch you later ...two small people to entertain today. Weather here cannot make it's mind up!

Hi ....Just back for another look..

It says Locksmith of Stafford. Not Beckwith Stafford....told you my eye sight was going down hill.....parish records in latin to blame..

So he must of been convicted in Salop in March as I can see that date.

If we can find his marriage cert in Aus, it will help  or even a death cert..

wow thankyou, so do you think he was a locksmiths son?? or was that who he broke in to, on one of the records i have it has him as errand boy, maybe he was an errand boy for a locksmith and used his knowledge to break into a house??? interesting... so how would i get hold of the marriage cert from aus??? cos that would no doubt hold more info, thanks again for reading the text i couldnt read half of it well done, ps do you think it states that his native place was plymouth? there is plymouth stafford and salop now mmmm where was he born??? i will keep looking.

Hey I told you Prue was good at this...Well Done.. a much better job than me.....my printer is up the creek so have been flitting between the images.

What we need now is for someone to find a record of the marriage and find the details to order the cert. It could prove that the FM Archer is his father and he was a locksmith. Once we have a full name we would have more to work on.

Try a post requesting help with the marriage and show a link to this thread it will save look ups being done twice.

   Again well done Prue :)

Give the dates/ names /church and any info known.

I dont know Australia areas at all I am afraid but as with here in UK someone may have access to Launceston records.

I found the marriage on the Tas Archives site - that's what I deleted in my post above, because I thought you already had it (the lady's name and the date are correct from what you've quoted already).  Actually, what I found was a "permission to marry" application - as your man was a convict (the lady he married was free) he had to apply to the authorities for permission to get married.

Go here:
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=5
and put in your fellow's name, and you'll get the reference you need.  You can then apply to the Archives for a copy of the application.

hopefully, this link will take you to William and Marian's record in the Tas Colonial Family Links database, showing their children, DOB, DOD etc.

hi prue, i have most of the records you mention.. i have an application for marriage, a record of the marriage, a description of william archer ie height etc, i got them from that site you gave me a while ago, but none of the docs have any birth details on them, what do you think of this abraham archer, do you think it could be abm instead of fm on that doc you read for me??? let me know if you think im chasing the wrong goose lol!!!
thanks for all your help so far its been great from everyone.

Definitely not Abm - It's F.W....it also says that F.W. Archer is single (I'm pretty sure that's what the 'single' at the end of that entry means, although I'm not sure about the 'P' following it - I've only ever seen 'singlewoman' and 'singleman' before).  I'm not 100% familiar with Tas convict records, but it looks like the entry below your William Archer (for William Atten) follows the same basic pattern and ends with the same word: 'single' and then 'P'.  It would be pretty unlikely, if this was referring to the father, that both mens' fathers would be single!

It's my (limited) experience that parentage and even hometown is rarely mentioned in convict records.  My two convicts had slightly less common names than your William Archer, and I was able to find their home counties on their paperwork, so have been able to track them down.

Have you got a copy of his Conditional Pardon?
