Hi I am researching a John Twiss born around 1860. His family were from Cordal, Castleisland, Ireland and at some stage went to london to live.
By all accounts his mothers surname was Chute.
John Twiss later returned to Ireland and was hanged for murder in 1895. A murder he did not have any part in I might add the story is below.

I would like to obtain the birth record of John Twiss I know its along shot but worth a try.

Have you found the family on any census in London? Might just give you the correct birthplace of John Twiss.

I do not know what area of London they were in or for how long the family stayed there. All I have a letter which says John Twiss was born in 1860 in England most likely London. And his mother's surname was Chute. So very little information to go with unfortunately.

Hi Gerard
You could try contacting Gerald Twiss - see here:

I know he has VERY extensive information on TWISS families in all parts of the world.

Gerard,
I am also researching the moonlighter John Twiss, and have been collecting material on the Glenlara murder and Twiss's execution for years, hoping to publish something on it. I suppose it's Pat Lynch's book you read. He's quite vague on Twiss's origins. I've come across 2 or 3 surnames for Twiss's mother. It might indeed be Chute - I haven't confirmed it yet. I haven't pursued the question of his birth in London yet, or the reasons fo the family's dramatic fall in its fortunes. As you probably know the family were C of I but might have become Catholic. Lynch probably spoke to people who knew the family when he researched it in the 1950s, but that doesn't mean his facts are all reliable. Nevertheless, several sources say he was indeed born in London.

there is a possible birth for a John Twiss in 1856 Q2 Whitechapel Volume 1c page 372.
Although the Mother's maiden name is Haley
-
That's him all right, Harris in Essex.
His mother's name was Elizabeth Healy (which would have been pronounced Haley). His parents were married at Whitechapel, where the family is also recorded in the 1851 census. They then returned to Ireland. Could you share your source for the information?
Thanks for the information,
Paul
