Title: Trying to find a photo of flowery field schools
Post by: Brains on Tuesday 10 July 07 08:28 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I would like to get a photo of Flowery field Infants  and or/ Junior or secondary school, in Newton Hyde Cheshire. I went there starting about 1950 till 1961 I left at 15 .
If possible that era time, or if not later.
Just wondered if any one has any photos of the schools?? and I could get some copies of them, if not does anyone know where I could  perhaps obtain some copies of the school.

appreciate any help if at all possible thanks.

Hi Brains
The best way to look for Photo's is to do a google search
even if you don't find a photo. It might tell you if any archives have any which they might do if the school was demolished.

A couple of web site addresses here:

http://www.friendsoffloweryfield.co.uk/ (this one has a photo page, but no suitable photos yet, although I reckon they would help if asked.)

http://www.floweryfield.tameside.sch.uk/

I vaguely recognise the name Flowery Field school, but can't place it.  I lived in Windermere Road, Hyde back in the early 50's.  I've just had a look on google maps, and Yes, it was pretty close to me, so maybe I went there myself.

I do like google maps.  I've just found my great aunts house on Thorncliffe Ave.

There is a photo of Flowery Fields school on the Tameside website/Image archive

http://www.tameside.gov.uk/history/archive.php3

If you type in Flowery Fields School you will find a selection of images of pupils and one of the school itself - my husband was also a pupil there in the 50s.

HI Indis Vanyar,

Thanks for your email back, I looked at the web  site and typed in flowery field schools, but could not find any photos of the schools.  Only one of Ashton Bros Mill, in the 1920's said flowery field area, is that the photo you  meant???

Barbara, that web page search function is very "word specific", and needs exact spelling.

Type in:  flowery field school

It then shows the images.  But if you still have problems, I can let you have the direct web links to the pictures.

HI Dee,

Thanks also for your email back regarding trying to get photos of flowery field Infants, Junior, and /or secondary schools.
Yes I will wait till you can do it in September if possible.

I appreciate that very much, I used to go to infants, junior and secondary, I left in March 1961 at the age of 15.
I used to live in Elizabeth St off Manchester road Hyde, then later lived at Clarendon Road Hyde.
I emigrated  here to Australia in 1967.
Do you live in Hyde, or near by?

I  was born at 8 Elizabeth Street  off Manchester Road Hyde, My Grandad had a furniture shop at the corner of Elizabeth ST and Manchester Road Hyde, untill he died in 1955, then it was owned by  a lady called Alma   and was a dress shop ??
dont know if you knew that area or the shops,  Later when i was about 12 we moved to Clarendon Road HYde.  then in 1967  emigrated here to Australia.

Hi

No problems about the photos, I will do what I can.  Ok the Leahs that I knew lived on Wilson Street, Hyde, just round the corner from Leigh Street School, and Nelson Street.  The children were born around 1960-70.   I didnt know the parents.    Elizabeth Street still stands, well part of it.  The rest was where the motorway is now.  I was born and raised in Hyde.

I have just tried this link

http://www.tameside.gov.uk/history/archive.php3

again and it does work if you type

Flowery Field School

(not schools) in the Search the Archive box. The photo of the school is the seventh on the page, preceeded by photos of class groups with their class teachers.

Hope this helps.  :)

HI Katy,

Just a add on, I remember Hart rd, off Old road, and I went to St Stephens Church, Youth club, and Church girls Brigades.  My freind Barbara Lees lived on Hallbottom  Road, I think it was called  that ,just down from St stephens over the bridge and to the right, arround a few street, I also had a Gt Grandma living in Keswick Ave over the bridge and to the left, actually when I was growing up I thought she was my Grandma, my dads Mother, but she was actually his Grandma, so that made her my GT Grandma. I had  a Grandma living on dukinfield road almost opposite Keswick Ave.

HI Indisvanyar,

Thanks for your last email, and I have just been in to the site you gave me, and yes I get in and have seen those photos, I was on a few of them it was one of my classes, I dont know who put the photos up, it says donor by Mrs. B .Mcvey that is me, I dont remember putting any photos up there, as I dont know how to do them, My name is Barbara Mcvey it was Barbara Leah, they have it as Barbara Leech,  so somebody else who had that photo may have put it on I think. I have the photos in my  album.  I really wanted a photo of the actual School building, either Infant/Junior or secondary, but I see there was a older photo of what looks like the infant school at Flowery field, so may have to be  satisfied with that..
I  dont know why I did not get in the site  where the photos are before, but never mind I have at last found them.

thanks again for your help.

Hi Dee,
Hope all is well with you,
On one of your emails you said you went to school, or you knew some children with the name Leah,  I have been trying to find My Grandads brothers, if they married and had any children, may have to wait till the next census  1911 comes out,   The names are a  Samuel Leah born 1870  Hyde,  Thomas born 1875 Hyde, William born 1882 Hyde, and a Joseph born 1884,   William and Joseph  Leah    were coal miners, (Hewers)  on the 1901 census  and boarded with people called The "Wallbanks" as I have a Census of them, then living at  16 Francis St Hyde.
William was then 18, and Joseph 16. So I would think they may have married, and may show up on the next Census, hopefully,
My Grandads name was John Leah born 1877 Hyde.

I am just a wondering if these children you knew where offsprings from maybe my grandads brothers,  childrens childrens ,you never know,
Offcourse may be  not, it can be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
but I have  to try  just the same. Do you remember the childrens first names?

Just a thought anyway.
Thanks for that information anyway, I will keep it on file.

Regards
Barbara

Hi July,
Thanks for you last email, The name Irene Langrish rings a bell, and Eileen Needham definately rings a bell, I think  Eileen at one stage she  was in one of my classes at school, may have been junior school at flowery field, but not too sure. did you say it was Eileen that knew the Lees family, My freind Barbara  Oldham married David Lees, from Denton, he died  about 16 years ago,  My sunday school teacher at ST Stephens , I think she was called Mrs Pace,  I was then 15, also worked in the next office to me on the swithcboard at Newton Mill.  What was your Mothers first name July?

I knew a Kenneth Leah, I think he was from Redgate, Geecross, we contacted each other once, he would be about 64, he was older I think than me, I am 61. How old would JOhn, Mary and Kathleen be do you think, are they all Leah's I  emigrated to Sydney Australia in 1967, then 25 years ago came to live in Adelaide.

I am interested in any Leah's you may know,
Thanks for the information.
Regards
Barbara Mcvey(Leah)

HI Kathryn, July,

Thanks for your email.  Yes I have been back to Hyde, with my husband Richard who is Australian born. We went back in 2003, We stayed for a week with Barbara Lees/ne Oldham in Denton where she lived, unfortunately her partner had only died a few months before we got there, Barbara was very lonely without her partner Jack so she was very glad of our company, she took us arround to places, her Mother too had died, one day we walked arround with her to Newton Hall Road, where she lived , I got it wrong before I said  Hallbottom Road, it just came to me,  I wanted to go  in my old school flowery field secondary school, but it was a Sunday and of course everything closed up. and couldnt take a  photo as there were cars there,  we had a busy schedule, so didnt get back there  unfortunately. I had to see lots of old freinds and second and third cousins, we had a reunion of a few at my school at  "The Village Pub" in Dukinfield that was great, about twelve altogeather turned up, we went over to Northern Ireland for a week , as Richard has Irish  on his fathers side. we took a Trafalgar tour  and visited Paris, Amsterdam, Switzerland and Germany, and three days we stopped over in London as we were coming over to England. We were  there  only for four weeks, then had to visit my  Mum and  Dad  and brother and his wife in Gosford, N.S.W. an hour from Sydney. It was a great holiday but not long enough,

I dont know if Eileen Needhams father was Mayor or not, my Grandad James Fitton on my Mothers side was a councillor for Newton Ward as Labour, tried to go for Mayor, he had to resign  as councillor as he became ill and died in 1955.

I am in contact with a Annie Leah she is 81 lives in Rosemount Crescent Newton Hyde, she is wife to a Jack Leah but he died, Jack had a son Jonathon who was a brother to my Grandad John Leah. I have had a few letters from a Ronald Leah who lives on Ashton Road Hyde, he has a cousin Kenneth Leah, and Christine  Graham/ne Leah Christine lives in Blackpool . I found out that Christine Graham is my second cousin, as her Grandad Joseph Leah was a brother to my Grandad John Leah.

Well better get some lunch I am getting rather hungry.

Regards
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

The Tameside picture archive site has a number of photographs which may be of interest.
