I am looking for info on James McElhinney (the Meen - of Meenahoner, Carndonagh) who married Mary Dougherty.
I don't have dates but I know their son William was born on the farm at Meenahoner circa 1890 and left for NZ with his brother John in 1908. The family thinks John stopped in Oz but his line is "missing".
I would like a marriage record (they were Catholic), Griffiths Valuation info or anything anyone can find.
Any suggestions as to where I should be looking my research would be most most appreciated!
I know that James (Jimmy's) brothers were Dan (the Loch) and Gerry (the Bunnerer) and from speaking to the family it would appear that James and Dan were Gamekeepers - one on the land one by the loch. The land was given/purchased by the family at some point and they sold Turf from the land.
A second cousin (or futher away) still lives on the family farm but none of the rellys who still live there know anything about the family history so I'm starting with very little.
There are a number of McElhinney family's in the area who are not directly related (or the link has been forgotten).
Any help would be wonderful. Julia

Hi Julia
Have a look at the other thread above this. Mc elhenny Fern Look up. I've put some details on there for you. Sorry no information on William yet.

Hi Julia
I thought I would add additional information on this thread as others reading may get confused over the two separate threads and you may miss out on a chanced to be helped.
To use family search enter your details in the search box on the home page. You may have to play around with places and dates. If you wish to search for children of James and Mary click the advance search below your original search box and enter the details in the parent boxes. When your search produces results scroll down to the British Isles, if your ancestors were born in Ireland that is where they should be. You could also check the pedigree and resource files listed in your results, aswell.
This site was provided by Pels for my search on Mc Elheney name variants and you might like to use it for your Doherty also. http://namethesaurus.com/Thesaurus/Search.aspx.
Now I did have a look at http://archway.archives.govt.nz but absolutely no results for McElheney with the variants I used, you might like to try your own variations of the name and see how you get on.
Good luck hunting

I had a look on the NZ weblink you gave me, using the spelling I use for my name (McElhinney) and got 39 hits - at least some of them I know are rellys but I haven't investigated yet.
Thanks for that.
I am starting to get the impression that my Irish side is going to be difficult if not impossible to do much more with.
I would love to have a look on the 1901 and 1911 census but all the links I have found to the Donagh Parish/ Carndonagh are missing. I think the website might be being upgraded so it might just require some patience until it's back up again.

Hi Jules
I suggest you invest in some head gear, like the boxers wear, you're going to need it for banging your head against the wall for your Irish lot. Aye! it's a difficult one.
Another little trick I learned today on Ancestry. Even though one may not have subscription I found that if you enter in your search box who your looking for and find the year you can in a roundabout way find the parents. As you can't access the trees without subscription, purely by accident I found if I entered the year and country and if possible the county ( no names )and clicked on search
you'll come up with results for the Public, One World and Personal Family trees, according to the year entered.
As an example I was looking for Robert Mc Elheney and found a public tree that would only give me access to the date of birth. I decide to further search and enter country and county details with the year of birth and must have somehow deleted the names and entered the search and under the 75 search results that came up I found the same Robert Mc Elheney, same Birthdate and in the same family tree which provided his parents name that I couldn't access on the previous search. The same applied to the One World tree.
It may not be ingenuous or new but I managed to match a few relies up.
Enjoy your hunting and pleased to here you've found some results
Cheers

Henry was Charles Boyle's younger brother.

Hi Julie
This could be who you are looking for.
A James McElhiney married a Mary Doherty in Sacred Heart RC Church Carndonagh on 18/04/1875. Alas no townland is given so this is the best I can do.
There was also a Bernard McElhiney of Ternaleagu married a Mary Doherty of Treanban in same church 05/04/1862

You are wonderful!
Thank you so much... there is not very much out there by all accounts!

Agnes thank you so much.
Thanks to some very fragile family links I was able to travel last year to Carondonagh and stayed with the Grandson of Philip McElhinney (who you found...). I was surprised to find they were as emotional about the "family coming home" as we were about being there. We even visited the Meenahoner, and house where my "uncle" still lives which James and Mary built all that time ago. It made my father cry, as he thinks of himself as Irish but had never been...let alone to find the family and see the homested that his grandfather had talked about when he was a boy.
I am descended from William who aparently left Ireland at 18.
He arrived in NZ in 1908 and started our family line. This year we had a 100 year celebration and three of my distant cousins from Philips line came over - it was fab!
What is most surprising is that the family there know very little about where else the family has gone - there are McElhinneys all around but prob the family links have been lost because they were all living in the same area - so you have given me more information than they could!!!
As I was there for a short time of only 5 days, I made the most of meeting those that were there so didn't make it to the Library.
Thank you so much.

Hello - I'm a McElhinney too! My dad is from Carndonagh, Co. Donegal and his family were known as the 'lochmen'. My grandad was William McElhinney (married to Ethne Davenport). I know a little bit about our history but am still filling in the gaps. I know my grandad was the eldest of six children and his dad married again after his first wife died. Gt grandad apparently had another six children in Scotland with his second wife. I think we must be related..... it would be nice to be in touch...
best wishes
Marvin.
-
Yes I think we are related...
The story I got from the family still there was that there were brothers McElhinney;
Jimmy the Meen (James of the Meenahoner), Gerry the Bunnarar (don't know what that means and neither did the family, or how to spell it) and Dan the Loch. That during the time when the English landlords were doing all sorts of nasty stuff in Ireland the McElhinney's were working the property of a Landlord; Gerry was a gamekeeper, Dan tended the loch and Jimmy cut turf for fuel for the estate. Aparently they were all gifted a small piece of land for long service and the family said it was unusual for Irish Catholics to be given such things at the time.
James McElhinney (Jimmy the Meen) is my Great Great Grandfather (I was born in 1978 just to give some perspective), his children were born between 1876 and 1886 from the info I have.
So if you had a William the Loch as a grandfather maybe he was Dan the Loch's son? Do you have a date for the marriage to Ethne Davenport? Do you know the name of your Gt grandad?
Yes, we should get in touch. I could send you a Gedcom of what I have if you want. Feel free to email me on

Hi to all, I've put together some McElhinney + var d/bases for
Co.Donegal and Glasgow Scotland, pm me if you would like
a copy.
As previously mentioned my GG G/Mother was a McElhinney - married
a James Boyle, lived in Killhill,Bellanascaddan, Kilmacrenan Parish.
On my recent trip to the GROI in Dublin, I found my GG G/Mother's
death record 'by sheer luck' more than anything else! Sarah Boyle (ms McElhinney) d 4th July 1875,aged 55. Superintendent Reg.Dist. Letterkenny, Reg. Dist :Church Hill, Death Reg. in the Dist.Churchill, Union of Letterkenny, Townland of Ballynascaddin,Co.Donegal.
Charles Boyle (son of James & Sarah) b c 1839, inherited the
land at Ballynascaddin (Bellanascaddan) from John McElhinney
JohnMcelhinney died 1885. The John McElhinney in question was non RC, my Boyle line were RC. Would .. John McElhinney if he was not related to my GG Grandmother - Sarah Boyle (McElhinney) leave his land at Bellanscaddan to my GG Uncle Charles Boyle - Sarah's son? The same John Mcelhinney was witness to my G Grandmother's marriage St.Columba's RC,Termon 1874, and a William McElhinney
witnessed Charles Boyle's marriage 1873 @ Churchill.
From other documents, there was connection between this McElhinney
line and a Robert Gregg, also Starrit (sp)
Help appreciated.
thank you Anne

-
Hi Mervin,
My father was William McElhinney 'the lochman' & my mum was ethna davenport.
If you have any other questions I would only be too happy to help you fill in the gaps.
-
Hi Mary,
Do you know who your grandparents were?
So you and Thelochman are obviously related... you are his Aunt? And Marvin and Thelochman must be cousins.
Do you know each other already?
And more importantly (for me ;)) do any of you know any further back?
Anne do you know who your grandparents were?
My family were in Carndonagh and still are... what about yours?
I have checked the Griffins Valuation and we are not on it, so maybe we aquired it after this date.
Jules

I noticed the amount of info you had on the McElhinney and was hoping you had relatives in your family from the Doherty and / or McCafferty lines. I have a John Doherty that married a Rose McCafferty around 1860. They had a lot of children, but their son Michael Doherty married a Rose Doherty. Her parents were Arthur Doherty and Anne Kearney. I was hoping someone in your families were related. Thank you, Bob
-
Hi,
The Irish line is very difficult to trace, even with living relatives who are still in the original homestead!
I don't have any info on that side of the family sorry, but the people on this website are very helpful :-)
Good luck

Thank you Julia! BC

Hi everybody,
I am looking for any information on Annie McEhlenney from Carndonagh
as she is my Great Grannie
The Info that i already have is that she married my Great Granddad Thomas (Tommy) Comiskey from
Longford
I have the 1911 census return from the family home she had 4 brothers Owen, Patrick, Jonny and Daniel but she isn't listed at the address. At a guess she was born between 1887 - 1868 as that was the top and bottom of the age difference
Thanks in advance for any help

I'm not sure whether I fit in here somewhere (probably but where is the $64m question!). My 2xGt grandmother was Anne Mcelhinney b1834 in Co Donegal probably in the Rossbracken/Leck near Letterkenny. Her father was James a farmer and they were a presbyterian family. She married an Andrew Gailey on 17 Jan 1867. Witness was her brother Robert.
Just found this which was updated today and has Boyle graves which might be of interest to Anne (Portyglir)

Hi Mary,
I think my grandmother is your Aunt (Patricia).
I have information regarding McElhinney's at Tulnaree back to around 1820 but it is more recent history that I am having problems with.
Do you have any information on your grandmother, Esther McElwain who was married to Willie McELhinney? I can not find any sources for her or her family. Anything you have would be appreciated.
Simon
-
I also have a McElhinney connection although I'm not sure if there is a connection to any of the above families, details as follows:
My G Grandmother was Matilda McElhinney born c1874, Married my G Grandfather Josiah Houston on 30th Aug 1898 at St Columbs Cathedral Derry, and they lived at Bogstown (Steelstown area) in Derry, her father is listed as James McElhinney Occ: Labourer, I believe she died a few years later in the early 1900's (def before 1911) and my G Grandfather later remarried.
I believe this McElhinney family were from Muff Co Donegal, My Grandmother Mary Matilda Houston was born on 13th October 1900 and present at birth is listed a Mary McElhinney with place of residence given as Muff, this may have been my G Grandmothers Mother or Sister?
Any info on this McElhinney line welcome!

Hi There, Found a Matilda McElhinney b 15 March 1874, in Clondahorky East Church of Ireland.
Townland listed as Clonmore (aka Cloonmore) Father noted as John and Mother Elizabeth.
Let me know if this could be your line, as there are siblings to Matilda.
Regards
Anne
-
Matilda died 1914 and her mother was Elizabeth/Betty Irwin according to submitted I.G.I. record.- 2 other extracted records there give mother as Elizabeth Irwin.

Dont think this is the correct line as Matilda's fathers name is given as James on her Marriage Cert, Thanks Anyway!
Thanks Aghadowey, Matilda's married name was Houston, there is a record of a Matilda Jane Houston on the civil registration index who died jan - mar 1903, and showing as born 1873, I believe this may be her death record but unsure so I haven't requested the certificate yet.
-
Have you found your Matilda in 1901 census yet? if not, it should be added to 1911 on National Archives website soon (latest estimate in mid-2010).

Hi All, The 1911 Irish Census has been online for a few months at the National Archives Site.

Yes, the 1911 census has been online for a while but it's the 1901 census that is going to be added 3 June 2010

Hi Marvin and TheLochman,
I am trying to get information about my great grandmother who would also be either a grandmother or greatgrand mother of you as well (I think). My grandmother (Patricia) and Ethna Davenport where sisters. I know that there was always mention of The Lochman even with my mother.
I know that my greatgrand mother was Esther McElwain but I am not able to find any further information on her. I will be across in Carn later in the summer and would like to spend some time tracing family history.
Do you know if there are any McElwains around Carn? I thought I had read somewhere that they may be from Fahan.
Any information you may be able to share would be appreciated.

I hope this of help
-
Hi Teaqueen
Did any of your Lafferty,s end up in Greenock Scotland?
-
Hi Baldeagle,
the Lafferty's in my family ended up in Scotland, but i know they did move around the area, so there might be a few in Greenock.
have you came across something odd?
-
Hi TeaQueen
I am curious to find out about a Michael Lafferty who died in Greenock 1966. I was contacted just before Christmas by a person in Australia about this and she said she would get back to me after the holiday.
As you will know Australia is having it's problems at the moment and as the person lives in Queensland I think any more contact will be some time in comming. Meantime i though I would try and find out if any of your Lafferty's were in Greenoch in case this would be more relevant to you.
I think this Michael was my fathers cousin but have no proof of that but that not to say that the person contacting me is related to him. If the person contacts me again and I feel it may be of use to you I will be back in touch.
-
Hello,
After researching a bit more im almost positive that the Michael in my family stayed in Paisley upto his death, which going by Scotlands People looks to be in 1980 (age fits to his marriage certificate), hope you find out more information soon.
TQ
