Hello, Peter. I am connected to the Gerrards of St. Monance through my great grandmother, Margaret Gerrard, b. 1861. She married James Thomson Murray. Her father, I believe, was Andrew Gerrard. James' parents were Thomas Murray and Jane Thomson. The Murrays were in the fish curing business. I would be anxious to know if we have a connection, and if I could ask you for some local history as well as family history.
Thanks!

Sid, if you are still around, I am descended from Jean Gerrard, sister of your GGGrandfather Peter. I also have her parents as John Gerrard from St. Monance and Jean Tulloch, possibly from Aberdour. Jean married William Beveridge. I would love to hear if you found anything more on this family, and what relevant documentation you have found.
By the way, here is some dirt on Peter:

Thanks, Sid!
For the James Tulloch (b 1667) - Christian Anderson (b 1674) marriage I have another 5 probable siblings for the James and Margaret you have. The mother's name is not listed on these, but the father, location, and timing are a perfect match to the family. I realize you may not have included them for lack of proof, but I list them here in case you somehow missed them:
Janet’s baptism: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBXQ-F7S
Elizabeth’s baptism: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBXQ-3XW
Charles’ baptism: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBXW-15G
Isobel’s baptism: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBX3-19P
Christian’s baptism: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBXQ-9F8
Thanks for pointing me to the info! There were a few dates and spouses I did not have.
Thanks!

I have William's parents as Thomas Beveridge b. 1748, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, a glover, and Elizabeth Paton b. 1748, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. They appear to have been married in 1765 in Kirkcaldy, but I am not sure about find the date. Two Thomas Beveridges were married in Kirkcaldy on Feb. 8 and Nov. 1, but the brides were not listed. Their children were Alexander, William, Charles, Joseph, Ann, and Henry.

The latter two were born in St. Monance starting in 1776, all the rest were born in Wemyss (Jean was 1772).

Jim gives a link to an old post of mine about the Gerrards of St. Monans. They started up a boatbuilding business in Arbroath. The following link to some posts on the Auchmithie Roots genealogy forum may be of interest -
http://auchmithieroots.freeforums.org/the-stealing-of-the-girl-jean-t342.html
A Peter Gerrard of St. Monans married an Agnes Tarvet from my home town of Cellardyke, where they were living at the time of the 1881 census. Peter was a fisherman, born in St. Monans in 1847 to David Gerrard and Margaret Innes. I imagine all the Gerrards of St. Monans would have been related. In my day the local pronunciation of the name was something like "Jerrit".

Hi Sid,
Of the 8 children of James Beveridge and Catherine Matilda Todd, the only two who emigrated were William Todd Beveridge, who went to Australia, and his brother John Christie Beveridge (my ancestor), who emigrated to the United States. The rest remained in Scotland:
James Beveridge, tailor, married Jessie Gerrard 1855 Oct 3, S. Leith, Midlothian and he died in Leven.
Sarah Stoddard Beveridge married Henry Carmichael 1857 Aug 24 in Dysart
Jane Beveridge died at the age of 11 and is buried in Pathhead Feuars Graveyard, Dysart
Charles Jamieson Beveridge married Christina Smith 1862 Jan 6 in Dysart. He died 1928 in Dysart.
Catherine Beveridge died at the age of 3 and is buried in Pathhead Feuars Graveyard, Dysart
Mary Beveridge died at the age of about 2 and is buried in Pathhead Feuars Graveyard, Dysart
Parents James and Catherine are also interred in Pathhead Feuars Graveyard, along with Catherine's father. Sgt. William Tod(d).
Catherine Matilda Todd is listed in the 1851 census as being born “Overseas - British - London Town, America “ and in the 1861 census as being born in "St. John America." Do you or anyone else have a clue where she was born? Her father William was obviously in the military. Maybe he was stationed overseas?
The middle names of the children: Stoddard, Christie, and Jamieson, are all family names found in the Pathhead Feuars Graveyard. I would love to discover the family connections some day.

Andrew Nairn, b. 1875 Sept 21, Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy, Scotland, e. 1889, d. 1934 Jan 31 New Jersey, USA. Isabella Reid, his wife, was born 1877 Nov 18 at 16 Niddry St., Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland as the 13th (and last) child of John Reid and Janet Nicol, she emigrated 1892 Sept 9 on the SS Corean, d. 1946 Kearny, Hudson, NJ. She married Andrew 1901 Jan 29 in Manhattan, New York, New York. You have the correct 5 children. I have details on them if you need them. Charles and Donald were twins. Their first son, John Victor, was my grandfather. We have been discussing the Nicol line on another forum here.

Hi Jim
I have only just 'discovered' this site. I can give some details of the Beveridge and Todd families.
The William Tod(d) Beveridge who went to Australia is my paternal great-grandfather. I tried to attach a couple of extensive Word documents to this message on the BEVERIDGE-TODD and BEVERIDGE-DALTON families, but got an 'error' message because they were not in an acceptable format. I am no computer geek, so, short of giving you my e-mail address, I don't know how I can pass them to you. Any thoughts on how I get around this difficulty?
I can confirm that Catherine Matilda Todd's father, William Todd, was indeed in the military: he served almost 29 years (3 Nov 1787 to 30 April 1816) in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Artillery, spending the duration of his service at Halifax in present-day Nova Scotia. I have his two-page discharge certificate if you would like to see it. His 'retirement benefit' was a pension at the rate of 1 shilling and 7 pence per day, which, for the time, was not as bad as it might seem at our remove. "St John, Lower America" (present-day New Brunswick), which his daughter Catherine gave as her place of birth in a Census, is just across the Bay of Fundy from Nova Scotia.
My daughter had the opportunity a few years ago (about 2007) to visit Kirkcaldy. We had prepared beforehand for her to gain access to the Pathhead Feuars Graveyard and also did as much research as possible on the location of the grave. The key-holder who gave her access said she should not be too upset if she did not find the family grave because not many headstones had survived, and many of those which had were illegible. But, after orienting herself, she walked straight to it; she said the fellow's jaw nearly hit the ground!! I have a photo somewhere of her beside the headstone, which is still legible; if I can find the 'safe place' I put it in I will send it - if you are interested.
I am tied up with other things at the moment which are occupying my time, but wanted to get this off to you.
Kindest regards
Bob Beveridge

Welcome to the Forum, Bob! That sounds like wonderful information (and I have PMed you my contact information). Does the family show up on the Canadian censuses, or did British military installations keep their own records? Anyway, I can't wait to see what information you have collected!

Hi ev
Thank you for the heads-up on 'private' mail exchange method. I just dived in without reading the useful FAQs, etc. on the site. Too eager!
