My GGrandfather originated in Ireland inthe 1850's, and then travelled to live in NORTHWICH Cheshire. His name was TIMOTHY NAUGHTON/KNOCTON/NORTON, although the family eventually settled on NAUGHTON as the official spelling. He married SABINA STANTON in Northwich in about 1857. Can anyone outthere tell me how I can establish just wher Timothy was born in Ireland?
-
Hello Coco pops,
The only male Christian name you've given is Timothy. Hope that he was named after his Dad or Grand
Dad and one of them is listed in Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-64. There are seven or eight Timothy Naughtons listed.
Christopher.
-
Hello Christopher,
He certainly wasn't named after his Father, but I have no idea re:- his Grandad's name. However, any help is much appreciated, so will follow your lead. Many thanks,

Hello cocopops,
just small correction - you say Timothy 'originated' in Ireland in the 1850s- I am assuming you mean he emigrated from Ireland in 1850s. 1871 shows him born 1823.
Makes a difference if anyone is trying to search for him.
best wishes

have looked through the censuse, neither Timothy, Sabina or their various lodgers ever indicate where in Ireland they come from - :(
-
Hi, Heywood,
Yes, that's my problem !! Why couldn't SOMEONE have stated where they originated from in Ireland? It would save my fingers being worn to the bone!!
-
Hiya Coco pops,
May we have the names of the children of Timothy and Sabina please ??? Children were occasionally named after their grandfathers so that might well help in establishing the name of Timothy's father. The names of their girls may establish the name of his mother.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Timothy's Father was called Edward and, as usual a son was named after him, although not his eldest who was named James. Sabina's mother was named ? Sicelt or at least that is the spelling on the 1851 census. Sabina and Timothy had at least 1 daughter who was named Mary. Sabina's maiden name by the way, is STANTON

sorry to ask all this- are the Stantons in Northwich in 1851 too?
-
Hi Heywood,
Yes
-
I am asking because I am trying to help and wondered if they too were Irish and did any of them give place of origin in the censuses. I had only looked at Sabina in the censuses in her married state to Timothy.
It's just that on Ancestry the Stantons don't come up in 1851 - nor any soundex search for Sabina Stanton. I was trying to link Naughton and Stanton through Griffiths but as both names are to be found around Ireland it is quite difficult. Stanton/Staunton and Naughton are to be found in Mayo where quite a number of Northwich Irish orginated from by the looks of the census and in my mind that's what I was looking for.
Your one word reply implies that you are finding this a bit intrusive and I don't want to pry or that you are exasperated - you're not alone. ;)
best wishes

Hi Heywood,
No, I'm not finding anything intrusive--- the more ideas the merrier. Sabina and her mother are on the 1851 census, but again the place of birth is only Ireland. The trouble with the Naughton name is that it is spelt in various ways on all the census forms --- Knocton; Nocton; Norton and Naughton. In fact, my G.Grandfather lists it as Norton on his marriage certificate, but on subsequent census forms, it appears as Naughton!! What a conundrum.

Yes I have found the Naughtons plus aliases but it is the Stantons who are not turning up!
However if they too do not show anything but Ireland then we are stumped.
-
Hi Heywood,
Thanks for trying. I don't think Sabina and her mother appear on the 1841 census-- can't remember whether or not I have looked. All the dates begin to meld into one another after a few years!! I have noticed that the spelling for Sabina's mother, when PRINTED on the printer-friendly version, is NOT what appears on the actual form!! On the original, it it is quite clear that her name is Sicely, and NOT Sicelt as printed. No wonder people can be hard to find!!
-
Not wanting to confuse the issue, but Naughton, pronounced "Nockton", is also in the Galway area, there is also the surname Staunton ,. Bodger
-
Thanks Bodger,
I had thought of Staunton, simply because there is a town in Virginia which is spelt STAUNTON, but is pronounced STANTON. Don't you just love these mysteries?!
CocoPops
-
yes Bodger and they have people around them I think from Galway and Mayo and others I suppose. However I am glad to say that at long last I have found the Stantons in 1851, having previously searched and searched. Thanks to Cocopops - I looked for Sicely instead of Sicelt and got the Hantons. They are with several Costellos.
I was going for Mayo and Staunton because of the Sports shops there and it seemed as good a guess as any! Plus my dad was a Mayoman ;)
-
would you ever believe that even the Costellos don't admit to a county- just Ireland in all the censuses.
Can't find Sicely after 1851 and through all censuses most Stantons in Cheshire also are just Ireland. The ones that do name their place of birth are perhaps mainly Mayo so that's the favourite but sadly without other info. it looks as though you're stuck.
Clutching at straws, if you had Mr Stanton's name from marriage cert. - you could perhaps go: Griffiths Valuation/ Parish records/ marriage of ? and Sicely/ baptism of Sabina but to get that info from early parish records would also be a task.
best wishes Cocopops,

Thanks anyway!
Sabina's mother was listed as a widow in 1851, so I really am stuck. Will try the suggestions that Co. Mayo may hold a clue. Another thing is, apparently someone in the family way back was a COSTELLO!! That , of course is another story.......................!

this is my GG grandad =)
-
thank you Heywood :)
-
MY Timothy had a son and Grandson called Edward. Grandson married an Elizabeth and had a son Bernard who dies a year or so again. As you say, Naughtons are still within Northwich and the christian names pop-up within each generation. As a result, heads start spinning and hair gets torn-out trying to discover just who belongs to who! Hope that this has ?helped.

I've got loads more info I can tell you, soon as I get I'll pm you ;)
-
Sorry, but I mis-led you. It was Timothy's son who married Elizabeth. Bernard must come from this marriage as my Grandad, James (1884-1965) had a cousin Bernard who is actually buried near him in Witton Church yard. However,as I said before, there are so many names which appear in every generation!
