I am looking for information on a
Hermann De Barranca who married an Alice Mason in 1888, I have five children from the marriage. The 1891 census shows the family surname spelt De Barranco. but I cannot find any trace of them after this date.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
regards Patricia.

Can you give the full details of the 1891 census?

The Times, Saturday, Mar 30, 1895; pg. 14; Issue 34538; col B
- shows that H. De Barranca, Mansion House Chambers, Queen Victoria St, EC, was recieving orders under the bankrupty act.
The Times, Thursday, Jun 20, 1895; pg. 3; Issue 34608; col C
public examination under a recieving order - H. de Barranca, described as a financial agent, carrying on business at 11, Queen Victoria St. He attributes his insolvency to loss of business during the past five years; to loss by Stock Exchange speculations; and to his inability to recover his commission in respect of the sale of property in South Dakota.
Liabilities estimated at about £5000.
National Archives catalogue shows:
HO 144/308/B5755 - naturalisation of Hermann de Barannca, from Germany. (1889)
I think after about 1895 the family may have dropped the 'de' - freebmd shows a marriage of Henry Barranca in 1909 (probably to Annie Jackson, there's a Ethel M Barranca birth in 1918 with mother's name Jackson) and of Roselie in 1912 to Louis Kocher (daughter Alice born 1912).

I am very new to this forum and just found your old posting.
The Alice Mason and Herman De Barranca you were searching for were my husband's great grandparents and Rosalie was his grandmother. Alice said she had a sister (possibly Emma) who lived in Manchester and was married to the conductor of a large orchestra and carried all her jewellery around in a large gladstone bag. May just be a family myth however. Alice and Herman's marriage did not last long, she said he died of an insect bite while in South America, certainly I have never found anything further of him apart from the newspaper cutting and the naturalisation papers. Incidentally his parent were from Prussia. Apparently very rich with family estates there. Herman's oldest son was educated in Heidelberg, probably at a school military academy. He returned home with what he claimed to be a duelling scar on his face. Sadly when Herman disappeared so did the money.
Can you let me have any information you have about the Mason side of the family in Cheshire please?

Hi there, I have just read your message regarding the Barranca family. I am researching the Kocher family and am interested to discover when they moved to Hertfordshire. I know Rosalie is burried in St Albans cemetary. In particular, I'm looking for info on Ivor P Kocher, who died recently in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Any info would be great.
Thanks, Lizzie

I don't think we have the same Kocher family. Ours had just 3 girl children born around 1912-1918 so the family name then died out. Also Rosalie is buried in Stevenage cemetery.
Sorry can't help you

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any info on any other branches of the Kocher family? The ones I'm searching for, possibly started off in Derbyshire or Yorkshire and ended up in Battersea, Surrey area. Thanks again.

Sorry no. My Louis Kocher immigrated here from Switzerland in the early 20th century. He had only one sister who lived in South America.
Seems not related here in England.
Louis' father in Switzerland was married five times but we know nothing of any other family, so there is the slight possibilty there may be a connection but we know nothing to help you.
Sorry
Deanne
