Title: BARBADOS : Tracing a Birth - Lucilla Hurburt MULLINS
Post by: BobtheBee on Friday 10 December 04 16:54 GMT (UK)
A Lucilla Hurburt Mullins married into the Nelson family of Norwich in 1884, marrying William Nelson who was yesterdays mysterious trade - a Journeyman Printer.

In the census 1901 her place of birth in 1864 is given as West Indies, Barbados.

She was white, and from the photos we've got of the family, not at all attractive, but was presumably the daughter of a planter or something.

Does anyone know where I might find details of her birth ?

Bob.

The LDS church have got a lot of parish records from Barbados on their website and at their Family History centres. The PRO have got a lot of records relating to Barbados including correspondance and returns from plantations but not birth, marriage or death records. If you want to find out more there is an excellent book called 'Tracing Your West Indian Ancestors' by Guy Grannum who works at the Public Records Office. This has a lot of really useful starters for anyone tracing black or white Carribean ancestors.

Kathy thanks very much for the offer, & I know it would be a tough trip to complete, but what with Christmas & everything, I just couldn't afford it right now, - maybe next year when I win the Lottery !

Bob

I have had a tiring time trying to find out details of my ancestors in Barbados.

I eventually wrote a letter to:

Registrar of the Supreme Court
Registration Department
Coleridge Street
Bridgetown, Barbados

I requested a Death certificate (I knew the date) on 21 Februaryl 2004 and got a burial certificate on 1 July 2004. Cost $8 Barbados.

There is a Barbdaos site that I did get some help from too.  Unfortunately I have had a computer reprogam and have lost all my 'favourites' so cannot tell you the address.  However, try a 'google'.  Also, Ancestry.com message board has a Barbados forum (I think) or it maybe genealogy.com.

Hope this helps.

The following name popped up when I searched for Lucilla:

Lucilla Herbert Millins christened February 2, 1862 to Gregory Millins and Mary Elizabeth Marshall in Saint Philip, Barbados, Caribbean

There is also a brother listed:

GREGORY CHARLES WINSTANLEY MULLINS christened 05 JUN 1863 in Saint Michael, Barbados, Caribbean

Hope this helps your research.

Hi hoolianama0508

Thank you for taking the time to reply to this topic which was started in December 2004.

Bob, the original poster, hasn't been online here since the end of 2011 but hopefully, he'll get notifications that we have posted, and come back soon.

Yes thanks hoolianama0508,

The system (if you can remember what the strange messages mean) works well as is evidenced by this reply to my first posting in 2004, and I can only thank you once again for your diligence and having the courtesy to try and let me know.

I will now be able to possibly advance what I know of Lucilla, which wasn't much.

Glad to assist! It's never to late to get a tip, even if it's just one piece more.

Lucilla Herbert Mullins (Millins) who married William Nelson is a direct descendant of my father.

We'd love to know how they met - this is as far back as we can go and we are wondering how on earth my fathers great great Grandfather met Lucilla.  We have no family record of him travelling overseas.

Can anyone help further?
