I'm deseprate! I'm trying to find my greatgrandfather and I just can't anywhere.
His name was Edward McGowan.
I don't know where or when he was born but I do know that he lived in Derry.
All I know is that he had a daughter called Bridget. When Bridget was married in 1912 she listed her address as Creggan Rd, Templemore Parish. Her father was deceased at the time of the marriage and his profession was "seaman".
Could someone look for the Edward McGowan family in the 1901 census on the Creggan Road. That way I would have an approximate age for Edward and maybe find out his wife's name. It would be a start.
Thanking in advance any kind soul that takes this on...

Hi I have just looked up the 1001 census and there are NO Mc Gowans Listed in Creggan Rd.
-
Wow.....that was a request I made a long time ago. Thank you very much for looking it up for me.
I'm begining to think that he must have been dead by 1901...he was a seaman and may have been lost at sea. His family could be living anywhere.
Thank you so much.

did you find his marriage.
regards mary.

I did Mary but I'm still ifing and buting about it..... :P You know you always have that niggling doubt.
I did it by a process of elimination based on stuff that RCers found for me on Emerald Ancestors and the Irish Genealogy site and just plan intuition based on a lot of variables....
On the Irish Genealogy site I had I think 3 potential births years for my grandmother based on her marriage cert. I finally took the plunge and ordered a birth certificate for one of the Bridget McGowan 's. Her father turned out to be Edward McGowan..seaman.... ;D ...match for name and occupation..... and her mother was a Mary McElwee.
After that I ordered the marriage cert for Edward and Mary...really didn't give me a heck of a lot...residence at time of marriage was Londonderry :-\
I have just found a Mrs. McGowan who signed the Ulster Declaration in September 1912...she gave her address as 31 Cottage Row...could be Mary McGowan (nee McElwee) ;D Same neighbourhood :) But, McGowan was a very common name. Not sure :P
I'm now thinking that a lot of my Irish tended to generalize addresses......
Perfect example is my grandfather on my mum's side. When the family emigrated to the US he said his birthplace was Buncrana...ya right...he was born at least 5-6 miles away as the crow flies.
mab.....still plodding on and very annoyed at her Irish ancestors ;D

Here are some records that may be of use to you. Hopefully they will at least eliminate some records from your research.

Thank you very much Otto ;D I'll take a look at your info.
I'm beginning to suspect that Edward was a lot older than his wife Mary. She may even have been his second wife. I have a picture of my great grandmother taken in 1949 and she looks pretty spry. I think that's why I'm having difficulty pinning him down as I'm looking for a much younger man and everything keeps pointing to a much older man.
Thank you for your help.

1911, at Creggan Road:
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Londonderry_Urban__4_/Creggan_Road/602998/
recorded as 'Magowan'. Mary is noted as being a widow.
Edward's 1904 death?

The Coroner's Inquiry noted in Londonderry Sentinel, has this Edward (albeit recorded in paper as Magowan), as being from Rosemount (which I think works for a Creggan Road address), and his wife as being a Mary. He was 'about 35 yrs' of age. Sole support of Mary and three children.

Thank you very much McManus and Scotmum but the post your replying to is from 2008 :)
I have found that info you have supplied and much more. One thing for future researchers of Edward McGowan and Mary McElwee is that there is incorrect info on the marriage record. Mary's father is given as a William but in fact he was a Patrick. When Mary McGowan nee McElwee was buried her son gave the info that her father was a Patrick and I have since confirmed that with family members and also via her baptism record.
Through DNA I also discovered a 2nd cousin 1xs removed with the surname McManus.
Take care :)
Mary Ann
