Liddle DOBSON bn Thornley 1870 Married Jane GRAYDON bn 1873 Trimdon 1897 Qtr Easington. They had several children and emigrated to Australia. I know they had a son named Graydon DOBSON. I am trying to find children born before they left. I am also trying to find Liddle DOBSON's parents marriage. The mother's christian name is a puzzle!!
Could anyone kindly find them in an earlier census as I have found a marriage of Thos DOBSON/John ATKINSON and Isabell STATHAM Sunderland June Qtr 1856 on Free BMD? My mother Nora GRAYDON, Bn 1903 told me she remembered waving them off when they left Trimdon.
In 1881 8 Hartlepool Street, Thornley
Thomas DOBSON aged 45 bn Wingate Lane Butcher
Gabballa aged 43 Thornley ??
John 18 Butcher
Catherine 13 Scholar
Liddle 10
William 7
Isabella 5
Ann 3
Mary 9 months
All born Thornley

looking at the 1881 original page, I'd say the wife / mother was Isabella
The daughter also called Isabella is another plus point ...
:)

1861 - RG9/3750; Folio: 47; Page: 14 - Thornley
Charles Street
Thomas Dobson 25 Head Butcher Thornley
Isabella Dobson 23 Wife do
Thomas Dobson 8 son do
Thomas jnr is clearly 8 on the original page ???
So is that 1856 marriage correct, or did Isabella bring a son to the marriage .... or was Thomas previously married ?
Or was he in fact 8 MONTHS old - see 1871 listing

Liddle Dolson 10 months do

ref Liddle & Jane, heres the family in 1901 - to find further kids you'd have to trawl the BMD Indices - and sadly, before 1911, mothers maiden name isnt shown.
1901 - RG13/4686; Folio: 25; Page: 41 - Thornley
Percy Street
Liddle Dobson 30 Head Stone QuarreyMan Thornley
Jennie Dobson 26 Wife Trimdon
Hannah E Dobson 3 dau Thornley
Grace E Dobson 1 dau do
PS. Couldnt see Graydon Dobson birth ? (In Easington RD) not a 2nd forename was it ?

Thank you so much for helping me with this. I never expected to progress so far after this one query. You are a star!!
I had some research on the DOBSON's but my son deleted all my Family Tree Maker by accident. He was upgrading my computer!! After a few months, I decided to try to put it all back and purchased Version 16 of Family Tree Maker.
Thank you for your help I am very grateful.

I forgot to say thank you as you for finding an extra child Thomas. I agree, who must have been 8 months in 1861. I know a descendant lives in Melbourne so I might be able to get further information from her.
I did have the name Gabbella in my Family Tree as it is on my 1881 disks and also on the Family History site which I have altered to Isabella.
Thank you again

Noreen,
This might be him: Thomas Dobson, b. 3q 1860, Easington 10a 299. A birth in this quarter of 1860 would make him about 8 months at the time of the census.

Thank you very much for this Jennifer, I will apply for the birth certificate to check whether the parents were married then.

I have found a marriage of Thos DOBSON/John ATKINSON and Isabell STATHAM Sunderland June Qtr 1856 on Free BMD
Hi Noreen
I think that there might be a slight problem :-\
According to the Sunderland registration site
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p7/
Isabella Statham married John Atkinson (not Thomas Dobson)
Click on “Search our indexes” in the long list of underlined links and check it out.
Sorry :-\

I can't find a suitable marriage on the Durham Council site, which has a complete index of the marriages in the current County Durham area.
As we know there isn't a suitable one on the Sunderland site. Nor can I find a match at Gateshead.
But I did find this in Newcastle:
Thomas Dobson married Isabella Wallace, 1857, St Nicholas, Newcastle.

Hi
This is only a possibility which might tie in with the marriage found by Jennifer.

Isabella is not with her parents in 1861 and she does not seem to be anywhere else under her maiden name either.

Thank you DS, Jen B and HA for helping me with this research. I had looked on the BMD Durham Site for the marriage of Thomas DOBSON and Isabella and also Free BMD I was about to look on Ancestry BMD when you seem to have found it.
My grandfather was Jane GRAYDON's brother James Fletcher GRAYDON.
I wondered where the name Liddle came from, as we use Graydon frequently as a Christian name. I think this marriage is the correct one found by Jennifer and will apply for it. Thank you again for all your help.

Thank you very much indeed. I sent for a copy of the marriage, straight away, on 8 Sept 1857 - Isabella WALLACE and Thomas DOBSON at St Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne, I like marriages as sometimes there are family members as witnesses!!
Thank you

Liddle DOBSON marrried Jane GRAYDON at St pauls Church Deaf Hill 1897, Durham.
Children who emigrated to Australia were:
Hannah, Grace, Thomas, Elsie, Sarah ,Lydia, Jane and George all Born Thornley Durham. A son Liddle was born in Australia and at least one other child.
Unfortunately, I have no records of their marriages or deaths etc., in Australia

It was the occupation of George aged 15 that I was unsure about. Clearly John is a banksman, as I put in reply 14.

Sorry Jennifer - I should have looked more carefully at your message...
Do you think it might just be "Labourer Coal"? The "C" is quite like that in the name of Catherine Wallace snr, though not so similar to the one in Catherine jnr's, or in "Coal" further down the page.
