Hi,
I have been trying for ages to locate my Grandmother's travel to Canada
I have only recently found a possible birth for her in Hull [awaiting Cert]
I have details of her marriage transcribed [by a rellie] This certificate in his possession is very frail, been sellotaped and it has not been kept in good condition and parts are virtually unreadable but here goes
" county of NOEHILJA" Provence of Quebec.
Can anyone shed any light on this appently the writting is bad and very faint
She married in December 1912 and had returned to Scotland by Feb 1915
I would dearly like to find the date etc of her arrival in Canada
And possibly something about the witness to the marriage
Any help gratefully appreciated
Whoops nearly forgot Her Name is
Mary Elizabeth Johnson born 1889

Hi there,
I wonder if it's Hochelaga which is a district in Montreal, Quebec?

I agree with Karen on the place name. If she was already in Canada in 1911, you could try searching the census.

Could you try posting a scan of the place name? There are some people in this forum who are very talented at making out letters on tattered documents :D
Cheers,

Could it possibly be NICOLET County? This is south of the St. Lawrence river around the Three Rivers area.
Hope that helps,
Nancy

Many thanks for your replies. Will try the census again and see if I can find her.
China---Unable to post a scanned copy as the original is unfortunately not in my possession. It belongs to my Cousin . The original has been damaged and repaired with sellotape which has over time caused more damageand it is very discoloured. It is apparently a very fragile document and he is loathe to try to copy it in any way shape or form so all I have is his quesstimate on his transciption of it.
Nancy-- Is NICOLET near to Montreal? Sorry my knowledge of Canada is very Limited
Many thanks

Hi Jean,
Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers) is about half way between Montreal and Quebec City. (Driving, about 100 Km from the outskirts on Montreal) This city is on the north side of the St. Lawrence river. Nicolet city is on the south side, more towards Montreal. Nicolet is also a county, so it doesn't mean the wedding took place in that city.
I hope this link works but it gives you a better idea as to where it is on a map:
http://faculty.marianopolis.edu/c.belanger/quebechistory/maps/MapRichelieu1956.htm
Montreal is not noted here but you can see the city north of the county LAPRAIRIE where is says LAVAL.
Hope that helps,
Nancy

There are a few possibilities on the 1911 Census.

Has anyone compared the 2 names on this page to the actual document?
I had a peek at this site and lots of Mary E. but none that jump out and say it is she ( ie. Scotland departure)...and some have no ages....

Hi J.J.
many thanks for the reply I am still seaching on this even now.
It is not possible for me to confirm or deny the place name as the original marriage certificate is not in my possession. It belongs to my cousin who is loathe to try to copy it in anyway shape or form as it appears that it is very fragile and has been repaired badly with sellotape and is very faded. All I have is my cousins wife's interpretation of the information. that is legible
many thanks for trying anyway if you do find something please let me know
kind regards
Jean
