Title: Can Anyone Read this Please??
Post by: C_Bishop on Monday 02 July 07 05:00 BST (UK)
Hi All

I don't know if this is really the right place to put this but its an aussie cert so....

Can anyone make out what the last 2 columns say? I brought this cert mainly for the marriage and children info yet cannot really make out what it all says. Looks to me as though he had 2 marriages. Can see only a few of the childrens names.

Any help would be appreciated thank you.
Cheers
Cat

NAA, as always has been a help here.
First there are several documents relating to application for registration of a patent for a 'flexible barrier for starting horse races' lodged by John Lawson Johnstone.

Secondly a ww2 enlistment for the navy digitised for one Alan Thomas  Johnstone who's Next of Kin is clearly written as Father John HOPE Johnstone.  He was born in1922 when father was in his early 20's.

Hi Sue

Thanks for that, i've just been on there, found George Hope Johnstone's miltary enlistment, he enlisted at age 15 and was caught out so i've been busy reading all 49 pages! Had a few of John Lawson Johnstone handwritten letters, fasinating reads!

Will now check out those you found!
Thanks
Cat :)

Hi Cat,

Back in reply #1 on this thread, the children of John Lawson JOHNSTONE from his
second marriage (to Daisy Evelyn RIPPON) were listed from his 1927 death cert as:
Quote from: PrueM
Children from marriage 2:
Charles Frederick  22 years
Enid Evelyn  19 years
Alfred Lawson  deceased
Alice  15 years

  ...
Enid Evelyn Johnstone died 1944 cert number 1529 place East Melbourne at the age of 85 years.
Charles Frederick Johnstone died 1950 cert number 12383 place Kew at the age of 5 years.
...

See my earlier post (reply #6) where I listed some deaths including:
Quote from: JAP
  ...
*JOHNSTONE Charles Fredk/ John Lawson/ Daisy Evelyn RIPPON/ KEW/ 5 (sic)/ 1950/ #12383
...

The 'sic' was to draw attention to what is obviously an error in the Victorian index -
Charles Frederick JOHNSTONE, son of John Lawson JOHNSTONE & Daisy Evelyn RIPPON,
would have been about 45 when he died.

There is obviously also an error in the Index re the age of Enid Evelyn JOHNSTONE.
I didn't notice this when I listed the death earlier:
Quote
  ...
*JOHNSTONE Enid Evelyn/ father Johnstone Jno Lawson/ mother Darcy (sic) Evelyn RIPPON/ died at E MELB/ age 85/ year 1944/ reference no 1529
...
85 must be a transcription error for 35.

Cheers,

JAP

Further to Ellen Jane Johnstone (nee Cross)

John Cross (father) married Bessie Goodfellow whom I believe came from Somerset England.

Their children were:

John Thomas Cross b. 1855 cert number 10255 place Sandridge
Eliza Ann Goodfellow Cross b. 1857 cert number 13826 place Melbourne
James George Cross b. 1860 cert number 662 place Footscray d. 1887 cert number13714 age of death 27 years place Footscray.
Elizabeth Jane Cross b. 1863 cert number 2099 place Footscray.

Bessie was spelt in many ways but she died Betsy Cross d. 1886 cert number 5473 age at death 65 years place Footscray.  Bessie's parents were Thomas Goodfellow and mother Esther Bond.

I don't believe Thomas Goodfellow and wife Esther Bond came out from Somerset in England but I can find three children that came to Australia.

Thomas Goodfellow d. 1868 cert number 5131 aged 59 years.  He was born in Somerset and his parent were list as Thomas Goodfellow and mother Esther Bond.

Maria Goodfellow married Jessie (Jesse) Geard I believe in Somerset.  They had children:

John Geard b. 1853 cert number 193 place Collingwood
Thomas Charles Geard d. 1854 cert number 3752 age at death 5 years and born in Somerset
Samuel John Geard d. 1882 cert number 11715 age at death 32 years and died in Fitzroy North.

Maria Geard (nee Goodfellow) d. 1873 cert number 6629 age at death 64 years and born in Somerset England.

..............

Jesse Geard remarried Maria Hall m. 1875 cert number 778 but she died in 1885 cert number 1402 age at death 67 years place North Fitzroy.

Jesse Geard remarried for the third time to Annie Maria Bird m. 1886 cert number 6988 place Montague.  They had one child I could find who was Naomi Geard b. 1887 cert number 3004 place Fitzroy, Naomi married Edward Bateman Saddington m. 1912 cert number 5301 place Fitzroy.
Jessie Saddington (nee Geard) d. 1964 cert number 20747 age at death 77 years place Fitzroy.

Edward Bateman Saddinton d. 1959 cert number 16308 age at death 86 years place Hawthorn.  His parent were listed as Samuel Saddington and mother Sarah Ann Mays

Jesse Geard died in 1905 cert number 12835 age at death 86 years place Hawthorn and his father is listed only and his name is Thomas Geard.

Wow, lots of posts! Thanks everyone!

I have just made contact with someone related to Daisy Rippon, Daisy's sister was this lady's grandmother. Apparently she is very happy to share all she knows, which is fantastic. She has knowledge of Daisy's marriage to John and of their children, she did mention that Alice born 1911 actually died a young age.

Yes JAP there seems a strange trend for this family concerning there Johnston/e name. Seems John Lawson was born as Johnstone, yet his parents records refer mainly to Johnston. I think its quite common with this name. It also happens further back in this line.

Thanks Gaynor for all of that! I'm kinda speechless! You've discovered alot! You are very good at this! Thank you very much! Will have a look at that site!

Thanks All!

Cat :)
