Howdy
I have found rellies (from census records) living in Ann St, Dundee and an Ann St, Maxwelltown in some death records.
Are these one and the same? and if so where was Maxwelltown actually located? Does it still exist today?
Cheers

Hi Annie
I have done a check of Dundee on Google maps and Ann St is still there. The only Maxwelltown parish I can find is in Kirkudbirght.
Am attaching a couple of links that might help http://www.scotsfamily.com/p3.htm#M

Hi Annie
Sorry, brain not in gear today. I forgot to say there is an Ann St in Kirkcudbright and it still exists today.

Hi Annie,
Maxwelltown is an area of Dundee, around the Hilltown. Ann Street is in that area.
You will find Ann Street on www.multimap.com

Thank you both so much for that info.
My gggrandparents were living at 27 Ann St according to the 1861 census and I also noticed on the map, not far from Ann St a Rose Lane, where they were living at the time of the 1841 census.
So they obviously didn't move far!
Can anyone tell me if the original 27 Ann St building still exists? I've found that there was at least 2 families living in this building at the time of the 1861 census...so I'm wondering if it was a boarding house of some sort?
My family were LYNCH's and in the second family, headed up by a Mrs Owen McGhee, there was also another couple of Lynch's so I'm wondering if they might be related to mine.....some more info to store away for a later date?
Cheers

The old Ann Street that you refer to has long gone. In fact they built multi-story housing in the area and these are called 'Maxwelltown multis'. I am not sure if there are plans to eventually demolish these tower blocks - a number are already demolished in other areas of the city, as the idea nowadays is to get the people out of these 'towers in the sky' and back down to terra firma in low buildings.
There is some regeneration going on in the area with smart new houses going up across the street from the multi-storey tower blocks.

Hi
Just thought you might enjoy the link below. After reading the article scroll down to view some pics of Dundee. In the first picture you will not fail to notice the tower blocks in question which take up a large slice of Ann Street/Maxwelltown.

Thanks for that Anne.
It was interesting to look at the Dundee of today.....maybe I'll get the chance to holiday there one day and investigate first hand my heritage!

Hi Annie
Glad you enjoyed the photos. The city sits in a lovely setting on the River Tay. Hope you can make it someday, there is a really good library that would no doubt be of great assistance to you in your relative hunt.
Best regards
