Title: 14th and 65th regiments in NZ-completed
Post by: Freckle on Saturday 30 June 07 00:28 BST (UK)
Tracing Andrew Robertson c1840 Johnstone Sct.1851 census has him in Glasgow, by 1864 he was in NZ , marriage cert. states he was in the 14th regiment.(Another Robertson researcher told me he joined an Irish unit.) He turns up in Australia in 1869. I have beeen trying to find if it was  a Scottish, English or Irish regiment even possibly NZ ???
I think he may have taken his discharge in NZ.
Auckland library has a book by Hugh Hughes listing the men who took their disacharge in NZ, but it is not on line.Would anyone have a copy of this book and be able to look this up for me?
Also looking for Andrews FIL James Chance he did take his discharge in NZ as I have found him in a trade directory in 1886/87 as a founder in Wellington. One of his childrens baptism records has James and Elizabeth of 65th regiment in 1855, but  a child born in 1857 and after does not state this.. (I have found James Jnr died WW1 France. )
Any help greatly appreciated

Hi
Have a look at http://www.regiments.org

You can look at British regiments in numerical order, also NZ and Australian, as well as others.

Hi Diana,

I have been into this site, but I tend to go round in circles. I will give it another go.

Thanks

Hi Freckle, I know what you mean. Maybe you need more info re the regiment. It seems there was a British 14th, as well as a NZ one (South Otago Rifles) 1911-1921 -  so do you know which it would be?   With the 65th, there was a Victorian one  -  65th (City of Footscray) Infantry 1915-1918  -  do those dates fit?

Are you in NZ?  If so, your local library should be able to get that book on library loan from Auckland for you.

Hi Diana,
the problem is I don't know what country  they enlisted in. Another researcher told me it was an Irish regiment (14th) He was born c1840 and married 1864 so he would have been too old for WW1, plus he entered Australia 1869 and stayed. James in 65th regiment was Andrews FIL, so he would have been born mid 1820's. I live in Australia, a small  country town and my only access to anything is the web and the very helpful people at rootschat.
I have just applied for a Notice of Intention to Marry from NZ it should tell me a bit more as Andrews wife was only 16 and needed her parents consent. I will visit the library and find out if they can get Hugh Hughes book for me, I won't hold my breath though, as I think they have only just discovered  biros.LOL                                                                                          Thanks again    Freckle

The 14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment served in New Zealand from 1860. In 1866 the regiment moved to Australia. The 14th were never an Irish Regiment.

The 65th (Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment served in New Zealand from 1846. In 1865 it left for England.

The two New Zealand Regiments mentioned have nothing to do with this period and so you don't need to worry about them.

Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve,
thank you so much for clarifying the regiments for me. I was at a loss, as I don't  understand much about the military. I now have another lead to follow.
Thanks

Hi if you email the Auckland Librarynand ask was he discharged in New ZZealand, the librarians will look it up and email it back to you. I have asked for my ancestor in the 70th regiment. Alas he didn't so I am still looking!
